Got to make time pass somehow when you’re caught on a roof in Kaikoura in a crisp southerly 🥶 🥶
We were unfortunately a day late getting this PV and battery in for a client, had we been a day earlier they could have avoided the 11 hour outage they experienced.

One thing we’re getting asked a lot more on site visits lately is, “what actually makes you different from everyone else?”
That’s a hard question to answer without sounding like you’re just giving another sales pitch, especially when the real answer is us. The knowledge we carry. The care we take. The amount of time, money and energy we continue to pour into this industry so we can show up properly for the people who trust us with their homes.
Since Goodyer Solar started in 2018, this business has been built on passion for the solar industry but also on frustration. Frustration from seeing homeowners left with systems that were never designed properly in the first place. Systems sold by people who didn’t understand the home, the switchboard, the phases, the shading, the usage, the future needs, or what that system would actually do once it was installed.
We’ve seen elderly couples sold solutions that were never going to work for their property. We’ve seen batteries installed where the design didn’t match the site. We’ve seen people left with expensive gear on the wall and no real support when things didn’t perform the way they were promised.
That is exactly why we do things the way we do.
There isn’t a training opportunity, industry event, supplier session, conference or technical update that we don’t try to be part of. We invest heavily in staying ahead because solar and battery technology is moving fast, and if you’re not actively learning, you’re already behind. That investment doesn’t always show up in a quote as a line item, but it absolutely shows up in the way your system is designed, installed, commissioned, supported and explained.
We don’t want to be the company that sells you the quickest option. We don’t want to be the cheapest quote on the kitchen bench just for the sake of winning the job. We want to be the team that knows why something will work, why something won’t, and cares enough to tell you the truth either way.
So when you ask what makes us different, it’s not a fancy answer.
It’s the care. It’s the training. It’s the experience. It’s the late nights spent learning new products, the weekends spent at industry events, the conversations with suppliers, the testing, the questioning, the refusal to cut corners, and the genuine want to leave every homeowner with a system that actually suits them.
Because once the panels are on the roof and the battery is on the wall, you’re the one living with that decision every day.
And we take that seriously.

A 12 second insight into Simone’s day stuck in captivity inside the office walls.
Please send coffee. Or sunlight. Ideally both.
Putting yourself out there as a business owner is weirdly terrifying for something that looks so casual online.
You think, “I should show more of the face behind the business.” Then someone turns the camera around onto you and suddenly you forget how to stand, speak, blink, or act like a normal functioning adult.
Behind Goodyer Solar isn’t some faceless business with stock photos I’ve pulled from Google. It’s a real local team, doing real work, having real conversations, juggling quotes, installs, admin, customers (the good, the bad and the ones who don’t treat you like a human) suppliers, emails, and the occasional emotional support KFC snack box 😉
People don’t just want to know what panels you install or what battery goes where. They want to know who is showing up at their home, who is answering the phone, who is backing the workmanship, and who is still slightly losing the plot inside the office walls (and this is always mean, Sonya keeps it pretty tame)
So this is me, putting myself out there one awkward little video at a time.
Business ownership isn’t always polished. Sometimes it’s professional. More often than not it’s chaotic in a trade business.
Anyway, enjoy this rare footage of me in my natural habitat.

This week we’re saying goodbye to our reliable Elfie 😢
She’s looked after us for the last 5 years and we’re rudely upgrading her for a much younger version. While the team make their way to Kaikoura with the younger model she’s about to be parked up awaiting her new home.
Are you in the market for an Elf?

Enphase & Sigenergy combination ⚡️ ☀️
This site has a few real-world challenges, with winter shading limiting the number of strong solar production hours available during the day. Rather than trying to oversell what the roof can’t physically produce, we designed the system around how the home actually uses power.
By pairing the Enphase rooftop system with Sigenergy battery storage, the goal is to make the most of the solar generation when it is available, then use the stored energy to help offset the client’s peak usage periods. This is where battery storage becomes a big part of the solution, not just storing “extra” solar, but helping reduce reliance on higher-cost grid power when the household demand is at its highest.
It’s a good example of why solar design isn’t one-size-fits-all. Shading, roof orientation, winter production and usage habits all matter. For this home, Sigenergy storage gives the client more control over their energy use and helps support the property through the times of day where power demand and often power pricing can bite the hardest.
A smart system isn’t just about how much power it can produce on the best day of summer. It’s about designing around the site conditions and making the system work properly for the home year-round.

Happy World Electrician Day ⚡️
Today’s a nod to the people keeping homes, businesses and solar systems running safely behind the scenes.
We’re pretty proud of the workmanship that goes into every install because good electrical work isn’t just about making things turn on. It’s about safety, quality, and doing the job properly the first time.
A big shoutout to our team on the tools, and to all the sparkies out there keeping the lights on.
