Just as important as exercise is Recovery and Rest. For some people these words illicit a somewhat stressful response - "if im not training hard I'm not getting results". In fact, the way our body works is quite the opposite. It is in fact in the times of resting that our body can recover, and if we don't give ourselves that 1-2 days off exercise and time out to rest each day your body will eventually hit a point of physical burn out. What this looks like for you is fatigue, less fitness, weaker in your lifts and much slower recovery from your workouts.

Taking time out doesn't necessarily have to mean laying on the couch all day catching up on Netflix, it could be a walk through the forest or along the beach, playing with your kids, doing a restorative or yin yoga class, doing some ROMWOD or anything similar that isn't exerting. In our fast paced society we don't often give ourselves the chance to stop and rest, as we are constantly attached to our phones and the needs, and demands of our everyday life. Taking time out for you, to allow your breath to slow right down and for your mind to become still is the most essential aspect to a healthy life.

Recently I was introduced to Black Lotus Float Studio which promotes very much this philosophy. 1 hour in the float tank is the equivalent to around 6 hours sleep. For me, a busy mum of 2 as well as 2 businesses to run this sounded AMAZING. The day I did my float session I hadn't trained for 3 weeks due to sick kids and then myself catching the bugs, I was sore after getting back into it, and immediately after that hour in the tank that stiffness was gone, and not only that, my mind was so much more alert. A brilliant way to reset and restore yourself particularly if you feel you are fatigued, burning the candle at both ends, or simply just needing 1 hour to yourself to be pampered. No need to freak out about being claustrophobic or sinking, the weightlessness experienced in the tank immediately sets your mind at ease. Located just in Riverhead these guys are super convenient and I will certainly be going back for regular sessions. I encourage you to give it a go, I assure you your body will thank you for it.

So start finding ways to encourage more rest and overall recovery for your body, you will see your health improve greatly when you do.
