Grumpy monkey by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang (picture book)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/47jy2I8
Jim Panzee had woken up on the wrong side of the bed, it’s a wonderful day but nothing seems right. His friends suggest that Jim might be grumpy, but he is sure he isn’t. When they tell him he is hunched up he straightens up. When they say his eyebrows look grumpy he raises them. When they say he is frowning he smiles instead – but it doesn’t make Jim feel happy inside. Even though his friends have heaps of suggestions to help him feel better nothing really works – until his friend Norman saves the day. An endearing picture book to help children learn to manage one of their bigger feelings.

Her many faces by Nicci Cloke (crime)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/3LM0Zoq
No one knew who Katherine Cole was, until four members from the private club she worked at were poisoned. When she was arrested the bodycam footage caught her saying they deserved it – a damning piece of evidence. As her trial approaches her story is brought to life by the men in her life – her father, her barrister, her childhood friend, her lover, and the journalist covering the case who knows she is guilty. As her young life is laid bare by the people who know her (or think they know her) it’s easy to see why she did what she did – but how well do we really know anyone? This gripping thriller draws some inspiration from the dangers of falling down online rabbit holes and being radicalised online. Told through switching points of view, this addictive read is best read in a single sitting.

We’re going on a dino hunt! By Yasmin Bond and Vicky Lommatzsch (picture book)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/4k3ALL3
Three children are off on an adventure, going on a dino hunt! It won’t be easy though as they are going to face all kinds of obstacles that they can’t go under, over or around so they’ll have to go through. Based on a classic American campfire song, this story will feel very familiar for fans of We’re going on a bear hunt by Michael Rosen that features the same repetition and predictability. A book that encourages audience participation (and anticipation) one-on-one and in larger groups.

The murder at world’s end by Ross Montgomery (crime historical)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/4r71hFJ (book) https://bit.ly/3O7rRA7 (AudioCD and eAudiobook)
It’s 1910 and Stephen Pike, freshly released from borstal, has been offered employment at Tithe Hall – a remote tidal island in Cornwall that is cut off from the world when the tide is high. The only problem is, Stephen has arrived when the house is being sealed to protect the inhabitants from the approaching Halley’s Comet, on the orders of Viscount. Lord Conrad Stockington-Welt agrees to hire Stephen and immediately assigns him the task of looking after Miss Decima Stockingham, who besides being the Viscount’s Aunt is also a foul-mouthed force of nature that has no concerns for social niceties. When Lord Stockington-Welt is found murdered in his study suspicion seems to naturally fall on Stephen, even though most people in the house don’t know his story. Luckily for Stephen, Miss Decima has taken a shine to him and she is determined to get to solve the murder before the incompetent Inspector Jarvis (from Scotland Yard no less) arrests Stephen for the crime.

One in a million by Smriti Prasadam-Halls and Nila Aye (picture book)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/4qrz8cr
Debra the Zebra lives in the grasslands of Africa, and though she may be small and not quite grown she has taught herself to count – well, to ten anyway. Counting to ten is fine for insects, and trees, and clouds but not so good when her friends suggest Debra should count her stripes. It’s Debra’s mum to the rescue though, and as mother and daughter take a walk Debra discovers hundreds, and thousands, and even a million. But when there are millions of animals will her mother be able to find Debra? A charming little counting picture book that will introduce your little ones to some very big numbers.

A is for … a rabbit’s tale by Jackie Hosking and Lucinda Gifford (picture book)
Catalogue link: https://bit.ly/4kKuzrH
In a pet shop a rabbit is for sale, waiting for a child or family to buy them and cuddle them. When a child does just that and takes the rabbit home it creates a bit of a challenge because everyone loves rabbits and sharing can be hard. This is a delightfully (and rabbity) alphabet book with a difference that will help with learning the alphabet and learning to share – so it’s a win win kind of picture book.
