So since finishing RNI 2023 Kick has been a cruising bus, earlier this week we decided to have another go at some 2 handed sailing and entered the Weiti Boating Club / Gulf Harbour Yacht Club Barfoot & Thompson 2 handed series race 2.
Course was approx 34NM with a 15-18 knot westerly forecast Starting off Gulf Harbour Marina and heading off to Flat Rock, then a cross to Motuora Island back through the Tiri Passage to Gulf Harbour Bouy and finishing back off Gulf Harbour Marina, this course got us very excited to stretch our legs on a longer course.
At start time wind was more SW which made for a great ride down to flat Rock with the MH A4, once through the Tiri Channel I didn't see our speed below 10knots very often with a top speed of 14 knots so was a bit of fun also just holding on to Hijinx the BW39 rounding Flat Rock approx 1 minute behind where we had a windward beat upto Motuora Island.
With the cruising pinhead main we were off the pace a bit upwind and Hijinx had some legs on extending. Once around Motuora Island we double headed with the BRO and J2 sitting nicely on about 9 knots upto Tiri Channel where we doused the BRO and had a windward beat to GH bouy where we had a navigation error going past it and having to reach back to it before reaching into the finish.
We ended up 17 mins behind Hijinx giving them the handicap win, well done guys.
Was great to get out there for a bit of a hoon and some fun, Kick is setup for cruising currently with solar arch and all the other goodies not the most optimised for racing but was definitely worth going out for a sail today.
Now for some more cruising over the Xmas holidays and we might see some of you out there!
2 weeks on from the finish of RNI and we are out for some family cruising at last!
Been looking forward to this!!!
So a week ago today we were almost 24 hours from finishing the Waikawa windward bash as some have named it enjoying what would probably be one of the best rides on the boat to date under A4 and a reefed main sitting between 15knots with a top speed of 19.3 knots which let's say that is fair moving for an Elliott cruiser! While enjoying this ride we were trying to block out the previous few days of bashing up wind but unfortunately the ride came to an end and guess what the last 12 hours we bashed upwind!
Regardless of how tough this race was we have pulled off a 3rd on Handicap in div 3 which we are very happy about given the boats weakest point of sail is upwind and she pulled through with only a damaged headsail car which is a true testament to the boat and how well she has been prepared and setup!
The last week has been very busy with washing the boat and and full clean from bow to stern, all gear back onboard ready to hand back over to the family to cruise our way through to the end of the summer! The backyard has had many sails hung up drying and packing them all away.
Would like to say a huge congrats to the whole fleet out there with us and making it to the finish line, I can say this was definitely a hard race when I compare it to the 2020 edition.
Huge thanks to the team at Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand for putting on this event and giving up your time to volunteer to make it all happen in such a professional manner.
Well done all involved, now let's go cruising!
Almost home! Let's just say this race has been a bit tedious!
Here's to the final leg of the "NOT" Round North Island race heading From Waikawa back to Auckland via the west coast.
Waikawa was a beautiful spot for a stop over and will definitely be visiting again some day.
See you all back in Auckland!
Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand
Second lap and again unfortunate to be passing cape Egmont in the dark...
Having some steady breeze is a game changer!
See you soon Waikawa!
We have turned the corner and heading south.
We prefer the 2023 version of leg 2 over 2020.
Big night in the loft last night! Think we got home around 1am.....
Got all the sails serviced, I bit of a nip and tuck and got and got our main sponsor logo onto the main so we can represent them the best we can on this lap!
That start line must be getting close 🤔.
Thanks Joel for sticking it out with us all night pulling sails out and getting the work done, legend 👍
Here we go again, better get that boat ready Josh Tucker !

Finally getting into prep mode for RNI 2023 starting with 2x Hiace van loads of cruising gear and then finding space in the garage!
Now to tick the jobs off the list for a start in less than 3 weeks!
Big upgrades on the Kick have been underway in the background with a new saloon table!... 😂😂😂.
This has been a project I started 2 years ago and I have finally got around to finishing it what do you think?
Coastal done and dusted with a great result on line. We managed 4th on line in Div 2 against the fully crewed boats and only just over a minute behind the Motorboat 2 who got line for our division so very happy with that result. Unfortunately it wasn't our race on handicap but still got 7th in our div.
Now the old girl is in cruise mode with the family onboard heading to Motutapu to finish off this glamour weekend!
Thanks Josh Tucker for a huge effort getting the boat up to Russell and back in a timely fashion and helping chuck the cruising gear on 👍.
preparations well underway with the essential amp install to satisfy the co skipper needs 🤣🤣.
So you may or may not have heard the rumours but Kick is now locked in for RNI 2023 with co-skipper Josh Tucker.
Let's just say the boat is in much better shape this time around than we were for the 2020 edition so the job lists shouldn't be as extravagant and should be able to focus in on the more fine tuning on the lead up to the start.
Next up for us is the PIC Coastal Classic going 2 handed so the crew can get some more hours on the water together and then she will be handed over for some family cruising which the family is hanging out for!
We will try to keep you up to date with our journey towards the Start of the RNI 2023 👍👍👍.
Video taken from the boys on the Waka heading for Gannet Rock.
Great day on the water yesterday for the Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand PIC Insurance Brokers Triple Series - Race 1 - 60NM.
Very tough day but managed to take the double in our division with the Waka & Truxton keeping us on our toes the whole way right to the finish.
Few pics taken from the Waka heading towards Gannet Rock.
Counting down the days, Thanks for the support from our local club Weiti BoatingClub!
Good luck to Brendan Sands and his crew of Richard Sands, Glenn Parker, Joel Mackie and Josh Tucker who are taking part in the 3 Kings Race which starts on Thursday.
The Three Kings Offshore Race is a 500 nautical mile challenge from Auckland up and around the Three Kings Islands and then back to Auckland finishing.
Good luck guys!!!!

Early morning start getting the old girl back in the water, all prep is complete for the Race and safety check was complete yesterday ✅.
Just food and water and we are good to go!
Kick is out of the water for her final prep for the RNZYS Three Kings Offshore Race!
Starting to get excited!
Not much has been happening on the Kick campaign lately but given we are entered to do the Three Kings race next month we thought we had better blow out the cob webs and break what needs breaking on the R66.
We started at the Gulf Harbour start line and completed the race in 6 hours 16minutes which we thought was a good effort from the 35foot cruiser!
Job list now includes:
-Fix the dining table
-fix broken window....
-replace 2x vang blocks
Video of us coming in hot to the finish with a top speed of 15.4 knots.
Bit of an upgrade to the cruising inventory thanks to Grant @ Chain Ropes & Anchors, here's to sleeping well in the next big blow!
After an unfortunate end to last week's cruising we had to cut away the old Manson plough after getting her well stuck on a rock.....
Happy New Year everyone from the team Kick.
Currently bound for the Poor Knights under her new Evolution Sails A5, do you like the obnoxious colour? 😆.
Kick still getting out on the race course in lock down!
Blue Sky, Sun is shining!
Here we go for race 2 of the SSANZ Triple 100 👍.
First 2 handed race since RNI, not the result we were after but still a great day out on the water.
Bring on the 100!
Heading down the bays to the start of the Ssanz 60!
Cheers to Ssanz and sponsor for supplying the keep cups 👍👍.
We are Back!!!!!
Facebook decided our page name was not PC so shut it down....
Well the old girl is finally back after pulling the rig 10 months ago and then life getting in the way a bit...
She has had a bit of work done over the 10 months so not all wasted! She has a fresh topside re paint, full re-wire, all new rigging and rig check along with a few touch ups on deck and interior.
We had a shake down race 2 weeks ago and then we pulled it together with the double on Sunday which is a really nice way to come back!
Next is the SSANZ Triple starting this Saturday which we are very excited to stretch her legs and line up with some of the competition we have been hiding from over the last 12 months.
Bring it on!!!
