For our Christmas function this year, the Techlight Ltd team and their partners attended the Cure Kids Charity Auction 2022 at the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside Hotel.
Over $55,000 was raised on the evening through local business sponsorship, silent auctions and donations.
Cure Kids focuses on raising funding to enable high-impact, New Zealand-based medical research to help save, extend and improve the lives of children diagnosed with serious life-impacting and life-limiting health conditions.
The team had a fantastic night, all dressed up in their finery, including a couple of kilts and sporrans, but best of all, the funds raised will support big research so that big breakthroughs in child health can happen.
Thanks LEGO and Cure Kids for supporting us and helping our Community.
There's a lot to catch up on; Jason & Alan trekked over 31 thousand steps and completed all stages at a whopping 59km combined! And our Lactic Turkeys teared up the course with the ultimate teamwork strategy.
Here's the behind-the-scenes 📢
Craig | Lactic Turkey, 6-hour race team
"Our Theta teams were outstanding; obviously nuts, but full of hidden talents that got us through the oddest of challenges. No one struggled on the bike/wade/run segments, and we all supported each other from start to finish."
Jason | Marokopa Munter, 12 hour race team
"The hills! Looking at maps of the area beforehand, you knew there were hills, but nothing ever really prepares you for the reality. Not only were they all steep, they were endless. The entire race felt like, let's go up here, let's go down again, hey look, a hill. Let's go up there…."

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a new digital app, developed by Dr Esther Cowley-Malcolm, Oscar Kightley, and Ali Cowley.
‘Play Kindly” was designed to support Pasifika families with bringing up children, even in challenging moments.
Prof Sally Merry, as Cure Kids & Duke Family Chair in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the University of Auckland (now retired), was asked to evaluate the app.
With support from Cure Kids, Prof Merry’s team tested the app with families. Their results showed that the app helped parents to understand their child’s behaviour and emotions.
Play Kindly is available for anyone to download, so if you’d like some helpful tools and techniques for your little ones, download the app on the Apple Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/playkindly/id1440374839

Young Māori health outcomes are still behind non-Maori youth says 20-year study
Professor Terryann Clark was recently appointed to the Cure Kids Chair in Youth and Adolescent Mental Health.
Terryann (TC) has a background as an adolescent nurse specialist and researcher with a passionate interest in equity for tamariki and taitamariki Māori. She has researched extensively in the area of youth health with a particular focus on mental health and holds national and international advisory roles.
This is evidenced in a just released Lancet study authored by Terryann and her peers, that found rangatahi Māori continue to carry a disproportionate burden of poor health outcomes, with limited evidence of narrowing inequities in New Zealand.
The study examined data over the past 20 years and also found a serious and concerning rapid decline in mental health among the group.
While the study makes for concerning reading, we’re committed to funding research that can help solve problems and believe the appointment Professor Terryann Clark will not only amplify the voices of rangatahi Māori, but also ensure we fund research that can help to reduce inequitable health outcomes in Aotearoa.

New hope for children at risk of New Zealand’s most iniquitous disease
Fantastic work led by Professor Michael Baker! Rheumatic fever can be a deadly autoimmune disease triggered by untreated step-throat and can develop into irreversible rheumatic heart disease, requiring long-term drug treatment and, on occasion, heart valve surgery.
Unfortunately, rates of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are staggering high in New Zealand when compared to other developed countries. Through your generous support, Cure Kids is proud to have partially funded this breakthrough study which may lead the way to preventing it.
Thank you for helping Cure Kids continue to work to towards our goal of healthier children, with brighter futures.

Donating away disease | The Project NZ
Thank you, New Zealand – your generosity has led to a world-first breakthrough in the race for a Batten disease cure!
It started back in 2012, with the help from The Flight of the Concords and many leading New Zealand entertainers recording the “Feel Inside (and stuff like that)” single, and a further celebrity song in 2015, featuring Lorde and the All Blacks, “Team Ball Player Thing”.
You got behind them in a big way, donating to Cure Kids to help fund some amazing South Island based research for Batten disease, the rare and fatal childhood condition.
Fast forward to today and these researchers from Lincoln University and the University of Otago have developed a world-first treatment for Batten disease, which has just been approved for trials in humans.
This Red Nose Day, donate and let’s make an even bigger impact on child health!

Cure Kids
Cure Kids is New Zealand’s leading child health research charity. Our vision is a healthy childhood for everyone.
Since forming in 1971, we have funded more than $40 million of research, which has enabled vast improvements in the health of children - extending, improving and saving the lives of kids both here and around the world.
Cure Kids is the only charity in New Zealand that funds research across a broad spectrum of child health. We have funded, or are currently funding, research investigating better treatments and cures for inherited heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, childhood cancers, SUDI, stillbirth, burns, and child and adolescent mental health, among many others.
Thousands of children and their families are living well, as a result of life-saving research funded by Cure Kids. The reality remains however, that there is still so much work to be done, to address alarming health statistics affecting our young people.
