Durability of Building Materials in Modern Construction
Understanding the durability of building materials is essential in construction planning. From concrete and steel to wood, brick, stone, and glass, each material offers unique strengths and limitations that influence structural performance, safety, and long-term sustainability in residential development.

Concrete mix ratio decides the strength of your structure 🏗️
This visual clearly shows the difference between incorrect and correct concrete proportions:
🔴 Weak (1:9 – Cement/Sand)
Too much sand, very less cement. Poor bonding → column failure.
🔴 Cracked (1:4 – Cement/Sand/Water)
Improper proportion and excess water can cause shrinkage cracks and reduced strength.
🔴 Strong (1:2:3 – Cement/Sand/Gravel + Water)
Proper balance of cement, sand, and aggregate ensures durability, load capacity, and long service life.
👉 Always follow the correct mix ratio as per structural design and site requirements. Quality materials + correct proportion = Safe construction.
Concrete Mix Ratios
- Incorrect Mix (1:9 Cement/Sand)
- Produces a weak column.
- Lacks gravel and proper proportioning.
- Results in crumbling and exposed reinforcement.
- Incorrect Mix (1:4 Cement/Sand/Water)
- Produces a cracked column.
- Missing gravel, leading to poor bonding.
- Excess water weakens strength and durability.
- Correct Mix (1:2:3 Cement/Sand/Gravel/Water)
- Produces a strong column.
- Balanced proportions ensure proper bonding and load-bearing capacity.
- Gravel adds bulk and strength, while water is controlled for workability.
Practical Notes
- Cement alone cannot guarantee strength; aggregate balance (sand + gravel) is essential.
- Too much sand or water leads to weak or cracked structures.
- Proper mix ratio (1:2:3) is the standard for durable concrete in structural applications.

Rise and Fall Method
The Rise and Fall Method is a precise leveling method in surveying used to determine the Reduced Levels (RLs) of different points by comparing consecutive staff readings.
When moving from one point to the next:
If the next staff reading is smaller, the ground has risen → called Rise
If the next staff reading is larger, the ground has fallen → called Fall
Steps
Take the Back Sight (BS) on a point with known RL (Benchmark).
Take the Fore Sight (FS) on the next point.
Calculate:
Rise = BS − FS (if BS > FS)
Fall = FS − BS (if FS > BS)
Find RL of next point:
RL(next) = RL(previous) + Rise
RL(next) = RL(previous) − Fall
Repeat the process for all points.
Arithmetic Check
✔ ΣBS − ΣFS = Last RL − First RL
This check helps detect errors, which is a big advantage of this method.
Advantages
High accuracy
Errors can be easily checked
Suitable for precise engineering works
Use
Used in road projects, canals, railways, buildings, and other civil engineering surveys.
