A study released by GI-TOC on April 9 revealed that Facebook is the most heavily abused platform worldwide for facilitating wildlife smuggling and illegal trade. Threatened or critically endangered species are primary targets. The majority of advertisements found on Facebook (84 percent) relate to the trade of threatened or critically endangered species. In 60 percent of the ads identified in the study, explicit prices for wildlife were listed.

“Since a detailed study is yet to be conducted, a precise number cannot be provided at present,” Park Information Officer Abinash Thapa Magar says, “However, in about 70 percent of the wildlife crime cases brought to our knowledge, digital media is linked somewhere.”

Ten days after a catastrophic flash flood devastated the Bhotekosi and Trishuli corridors, stranded victims remain without adequate food, clean water, or basic medical care. As the flood washed away roads and bridges, severing transportation networks, relief supplies collected from across the country and abroad remain stalled in collection centers. Local governments have been rendered helpless during this crisis after the federal government centralized relief distribution under a one-door system. Flood-affected victims sheltering in relief collection centers and holding centers remain under the cordon of federal security personnel. All workers trapped inside the tunnels of 12 hydropower projects across the hardest-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot have not yet been rescued. Because several swept-away bodies have not been collected or properly managed, they lie unclaimed along the riverbanks of the Bhotekosi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers, spreading a foul stench through low-lying settlements.
On September 2, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a press release drawing the government’s attention to the lack of effective coordination among federal, provincial, and local levels in relief distribution. NHRC monitoring showed that government mechanisms were immediately deployed for search and rescue right after the massive flood. However, the commission also pointed out delays in tunnel rescues, untraced foreign tourists, a lack of accurate damage data, and a shortage of skilled technicians and technology for rescue operations.
At a time when serious problems persist in immediate post-disaster search, rescue, and relief distribution, the government has instead focused its attention on claiming funds from the Loss and Damage Fund. For more details, you can go through the cmt section👇
