Top diplomats Robert Malley and Sigrid Kaag discussed the role of diplomacy in Middle Eastern conflict situations in an insightful conversation moderated by Rob Riemen. Why have the many attempts at peace not yet borne any fruit, and what can a diplomat truly achieve in the Middle East? Malley and Kaag talked about these and many more issues, followed by a lively Q&A with the audience.

𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 88, ‘Dwergen op schouders van reuzen’, draait om de culturele nalatenschap van grote denkers, schrijvers en kunstenaars. Wat kunnen wij leren van deze ‘reuzen’ die de wereld hebben verrijkt? Onder anderen Jan Terlouw, Rüdiger Safranski en Aleida Assmann laten zien welke grootheden hen inspireerden en hoe we, staand op hun schouders, met een nieuwe blik onze eigen tijd kunnen vormgeven. Voor 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 96, ‘Draag de vlag!’, werden vrienden van Nexus uitgenodigd om een brief te schrijven aan de jonge generatie, en aan hen door te geven wat er volgens deze verschillende auteurs het meest toe doet.

Sigrid Kaag tijdens de afgelopen Nexus-conferentie over immens oorlogsleed en de emotionele afstand die mensen daarvan ervaren. Op donderdagavond 7 mei betreedt Kaag opnieuw het Nexus-podium tijdens het symposium 'Middle East Diplomacy: The Inevitability of Tragedy?' in Rotterdam. Op 22 maart overleed Nexus' dierbare vriend Allan Janik (1941-2026). Janik was filosoof en een groot kenner van de vroegtwintigste-eeuwse cultuurgeschiedenis en het werk van Wittgenstein. Hij was een zeer gewaardeerde spreker op meerdere Nexus-conferenties, waaronder de allereerste in 1996. Al in 1995 nam hij deel aan een Nexus-symposium rondom Schönbergs opera Moses und Aron. Voor het tijdschrift 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 schreef Janik maar liefst zestien essays.
In 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 96, waarvoor vrienden van Nexus werden uitgenodigd om een brief te schrijven aan de jonge generatie, richtte Allan Janik zich tot een jonge filosofe op zoek naar advies over een eventuele filosofiestudie. Op gepassioneerde maar ook realistische wijze vertelt Janik over wat het inhoudt een ware filosoof te zijn, en over de uitdagingen die een wijsgerige carrière meebrengt.

'Voor de Britse podcastmaker en voormalig minister Rory Stewart was de maat deze week vol', zo begon NRC vandaag een artikel over de vleiende aanpak van Trump door Rutte. In de oorlog in Iran blijft de NAVO-chef openlijk achter de Amerikaanse president staan; op platform X eiste Stewart het aftreden van Rutte 'voor zijn steun aan een illegale oorlog'.
Afgelopen september gaf Rory Stewart de Nexus-masterclass 'Politics: Who Cares?', waarin hij onder meer sprak over ons huidige tijdperk van autoritarisme. Landen bedrijven machiavellistische politiek en de internationale rechtsorde wordt steeds verder afgebroken. De brute aanval van de VS en Israël op Iran is daar opnieuw een schrijnend voorbeeld van.
