SWAMP BODY TIDES

Tomorrow during the opening of the exhibition THE EARTH IS THINKING ALL ALONG… RADIUS is delighted to present the durational performance SWAMP TIDES by KATARZYNA PASTUSZAK, IRENA CHWARILSKA and NAT CHYLIŃSKA.

Situated in the center of the exhibition the performance will be shifting field of movement, sound, visuals, and word in entanglement. Gestures seep, resonate, and sediment like wetland matter, blurring organism and environment, expression and condition. Tidal rhythms of immersion and emergence, saturation and release. The swamp acts as thinking, pulsing co-agent, reconfiguring bodies within it. More-than-human sensing. Perception as shared terrain.

De performance, die in de kern van de tentoonstelling plaatsvindt, krijgt vorm als een voortdurend veranderend veld waarin beweging, geluid, beeld en woord met elkaar verweven zijn. Gebaren sijpelen door, resoneren en bezinken als zijnde materiaal uit het moeras, waardoor de grenzen tussen organisme en omgeving, expressie en toestand vervagen. Getijdenritmes van onderdompeling en opduiken, verzadiging en loslaten. Het moeras fungeert als een denkend, pulserend mede-agent, dat de lichamen erin herconfigureert. Meer-dan-menselijke waarneming. Perceptie als gedeeld terrein.

THE EARTH IS THINKING ALL ALONG… is conceived as a creative geophilosophical travelogue. It offers a series of entry points into what guest curator Rick Dolphijn calls a philosophy of land: situated experiments inviting us to sense how earth, water, air, and fire think together with plants, animals, infrastructures, spirits, and machines. In this exhibition, seven philosophers from across the globe enter into dialogue with artists with whom they felt a strong resonance in thinking the Earth. Together, they experiment, map, and speculate in situ, situating themselves in land and water, listening for how art and philosophy can assume responsibility for the Earth together.

DE AARDE DENKT VOORTDUREND MEE… is opgevat als een creatief geofilosofisch reisverslag. Het biedt een reeks ingangen tot wat gastcurator Rick Dolphijn een filosofie van het land noem: gesitueerde experimenten die ons uitnodigen te voelen hoe aarde, water, lucht en vuur samen denken met planten, dieren, infrastructuren, geesten en machines. In deze tentoonstelling gaan zeven filosofen uit de hele wereld in dialoog met kunstenaars met wie ze een sterke verwantschap voelden in hun denken over de Aarde. Samen experimenteren, brengen ze in kaart en speculeren ze ter plekke, waarbij ze zich in land en water situeren en luisteren naar hoe kunst en filosofie samen verantwoordelijkheid voor de Aarde kunnen nemen.

MIRIAM HILLAWI ABRAHAM: THE NIGHT THAT DREAMS—COSMOLOGIES OF SCALE

THE NIGHT THAT DREAMS is a scalar exhibition. By means of scaling, enlarging, distorting, overlaying, and obfuscating, the exhibition challenges dominant scientific ways of looking, understanding, and inhabiting the world, divulging ways of navigating it that are more affective, restorative, open-ended, sensorial, and participative.

The exhibition takes shape as an observatory for speculative cosmological inquiry. Lenses, projections, specimens, maps, cosmograms, and talismans are means to study African cosmologies following a methodology of interscalarity: the observation and analysis of phenomena across different scales of time and space simultaneously. Interscalarity is a conscious choice to not only reveal the entanglement between Sahelian cosmologies but to also embrace and reveal the material and epistemological plurality of indigenous navigation in the African continent.

DE DROMENDE NACHT is een tentoonstelling die draait om schaal. Door middel van schalen, vergroting, vervorming, overlapping en verhulling, daagt de tentoonstelling dominante, wetenschappelijke manieren van kijken, begrijpen en zijn uit en onthult alternatieve benaderingen die zintuiglijker, relationeler, herstellend en participatiever zijn.

De tentoonstelling is ingericht als een observatorium voor speculatief kosmologisch onderzoek. Lenzen, projecties, specimens, kaarten, kosmogrammen en talismannen worden gebruikt om Afrikaanse kosmologieën te bestuderen volgens een methode van interscalariteit: het gelijktijdig waarnemen en analyseren van fenomenen op verschillende schalen van tijd en ruimte. Deze interscalaire benadering onthult niet alleen de verwevenheid tussen Sahelische kosmologieën, maar toont ook de materiële en epistemologische variëteit van inheemse navigatie op het Afrikaanse continent.

JAARVERSLAG 2025

Benieuwd naar wat er in het afgelopen jaar allemaal bij RADIUS heeft plaatsgevonden? Recent hebben we ons jaarverslag gepubliceerd, dat vanaf nu te lezen valt op onze website. Hierin kun je verder lezen over het tentoonstellings- en publieksprogramma, onze visie op educatie, en hoe we met onder meer de CLUB VAN DELFT en de RADIUS MENSA werken aan lokale gemeenschapssvorming.

Als onderdeel van het jaarprogramma DE POLITIEKE GRENZEN VOORBIJ presenteerden we in 2025 vijf tentoonstellingen, waarin we aan de hand van beeldend kunstenaars en andere belanghebbenden een verbeelding maakten van de wijze waarop mensen en niet-mensen zich politiek kunnen emanciperen en organiseren, op weg naar een meersoortige politieke ecologie. Daarnaast organiseerden we meer dan twintig evenementen als onderdeel van het publiek programma en verwelkomden we meer dan 800 bezoekers binnen ons educatieprogramma. In totaal hebben we 13.750 bezoekers mogen ontvangen in het afgelopen jaar, en wij willen hen dan ook hartelijk bedanken! Daarnaast willen we ook alle sponsoren en fondsen bedanken die het afgelopen jaar mede mogelijk gemaakt hebben.

OPENING TWO NEW EXHIBITIONS AT RADIUS

RADIUS is pleased to invite you to the opening of the group exhibition THE EARTH IS THINKING ALL ALONG… and the solo exhibition MIRIAM HILLAWI ABRAHAM: THE NIGHT THAT DREAMS on Saturday 13 June from 16:00—19:00.

Within group exhibition THE EARTH IS THINKING ALL ALONG…, guest curated by philosopher Rick, artists and philosophers join forces in a collaborative search for ways to think with, rather than about, the Earth. Starting from the understanding that the ecological crises demands not only technological solutions but also new forms of attention, perception, and imagination, the Earth is approached as an active thinker and co-actor.

Tthe solo exhibition MIRIAM HILLAWI ABRAHAM: THE NIGHT THAT DREAMS, marks a new iteration in her longstanding research on pre-colonial African cosmologies. The new body of work presented in this exhibition studies and draws constellations between African cosmologies and spatial orders as multi-scalar repositories of lived knowledges and world-building traditions.

In de groepstentoonstelling DE AARDE DENKT VOORTDUREND MEE…, samengesteld door gastcurator en filosoof Rick Dolphijn, bundelen kunstenaars en filosofen hun krachten in een gezamenlijke zoektocht naar manieren om mét, in plaats van óver, de Aarde te denken. Vertrekkend vanuit het besef dat de ecologische crises niet slechts technologische oplossingen vraagt, maar ook nieuwe vormen van aandacht, waarneming en verbeelding, wordt de Aarde benaderd als een actieve denker en mede-actor.

Gelijktijdig presenteren we de solotentoonstelling MIRIAM HILLAWI ABRAHAM: DE DROMENDE NACHT. Deze tentoonstelling vormt een nieuwe fase in haar langlopende onderzoek naar prekoloniale Afrikaanse kosmologieën. In dit werk onderzoekt zij de verbanden tussen Afrikaanse kosmologieën en ruimtelijke ordeningen, als meerschalige dragers van geleefde kennis en tradities van wereldvorming.

SHAPESHIFTERS in DISMANTLE THE ANTHROPOCENE
GIOVANNI GIARETTA

SHAPESHIFTERS, a video work by Giovanni Giaretta, explores the aesthetic qualities of stones and minerals. Giaretta approaches geology as both a programmatic reference and a creative pretext, through which the composition and physical characteristics of rocks are formed. The film is like visual symphony of textures, shapes and structures that are created through these processes. The shots, for which Giaretta uses a variety of lights and colour filters, bring forward the particularities of each stone and mineral—highlighting their passages of light, their transparencies, and their reflections. They appear as landscapes of their own, some imprinted with figures within their crystals and fractures that only appear when they catch light.

SHAPESHIFTERS, een videowerk van Giovanni Giaretta, onderzoekt de esthetische kwaliteiten van stenen en mineralen. Giaretta benadert geologie als zowel een programmatische referentie als een creatief voorwendsel, waaruit de samenstelling en fysieke kenmerken van gesteenten worden gevormd. De film is een visuele symfonie van texturen, vormen en structuren die door deze processen worden gecreëerd. De opnames, waarvoor Giaretta verschillende soorten licht en kleurenfilters gebruikt, onthullen de bijzonderheden van de stenen en mineralen en leggen hun lichtdoorlatendheid, transparantie en reflecties bloot. Ze ogen als landschappen op zichzelf, soms bewoond door figuren die alleen zichtbaar worden als de kristallen en plooien het licht vangen.

DEATH AND STONE in DISMANTLE THE ANTHROPOCENE
LITHIC ALLIANCE

Lithic Alliance is a more-than-human collective, working primarily within the lithological realm and the energies and vibrations that emerge from it.

DEATH AND STONE questions the death of rocks: do they die, or are they already dead? While Historian Achille Mbembe’s account on necropolitics—the political logics that determine who is allowed to live and who must die—is primarily concerned with the life and death of human bodies,50 Lithic Alliance undertakes this theory into the lithological realm. Rocks—as massively accelerated mined resources—are inextricably tied to social structures and power relations. But can mining be understood as killing our mineralised co-inhabitants of the Earth? By asking if rocks die, DEATH AND STONE concurrently brings into question who presumes that they do not (get to) live.

Lithic Alliance is een meer-dan-menselijk collectief dat voornamelijk opereert binnen het lithologische (het aardwetenschappelijke) domein en de energieën en trillingen die daaruit voortkomen.

DEATH AND STONE bevraagt de dood van rotsen: sterven ze, of zijn ze al dood? Terwijl historicus Achille Mbembe’s uiteenzetting van necropolitiek—de politieke logica die bepaalt wie mag leven en wie moet sterven— zich voornamelijk bezighoudt met het leven en de dood van menselijke lichamen,50 vertaalt Lithic Alliance deze theorie naar het lithologische domein. Rotsen—als massaal geëxploiteerde delfstoffen—zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met sociale structuren en machtsverhoudingen. Maar kan extractie worden opgevat als het doden van de gemineraliseerde mede-bewoners van de Aarde? Door te vragen of rotsen sterven, stelt DEATH AND STONE tegelijkertijd de vraag wie veronderstelt dat ze niet (mogen) leven.

Voor de verdere totstandkoming van de tweede helft van het jaarprogramma JIJ EN IK ZIJN AARDE is RADIUS op zoek naar een STAGIAIR ASSISTENT CURATOR. Als Stagiair Assistent Curator ondersteun je de curatoren bij de ontwikkeling en realisatie van het publieke en artistieke programma van RADIUS.

Reageren kan tot en met vrijdag 29 mei 2026. Geselecteerde kandidaten worden uitgenodigd voor een kennismakings- en sollicitatiegesprek in de eerste of tweede week van juni. De startdatum van de functie is 1 juli 2026.

DEADLINE VACANCY: INTERN ASSISTANT CURATOR

For the second half of the YOU AND I ARE EARTH year-programme, RADIUS is seeking an INTERN ASSISTANT CURATOR. As an Intern Assistant Curator you will be working with the curators on the development and realisation of the public and artistic programme.

The closing date for this application is Friday 29 May 2025. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview in the first or second week of June. The starting date for this position is 1 July 2026.

FUTURE REMNANTS in DISMANTLE THE ANTHROPOCENE
XANDRA VAN DER EIJK

Xandra van der Eijk’s FUTURE REMNANTS is an artistic research project into the influence of humans on the evolutionary devel- opment of mineral formation. For this speculative research design, Van der Eijk exposes steel, aluminium, zinc, and copper objects to household chemicals for a maximum of seven days. The chemical reactions create colourful patterns on the objects. The relatively harmless chemicals that Van der Eijk uses do not compare to the hazardous materials used in the fine and heavy chemical industry Moreover, the timescale of Van der Eijk’s research does not measure to the timescales that the Earth is exposed to these chemicals. If these relatively short and soft exposures already create such strong reactions, who knows what kind of reactions are forming under the Earth’s surface?

FUTURE REMNANTS van Xandra van der Eijk is een artistiek onderzoeksproject naar de invloed van de mens op de evolutionaire ontwikkeling van mineraalvorming. Voor dit speculatieve onderzoeksontwerp stelt Van der Eijk voorwerpen van staal, aluminium, zink en koper bloot aan huishoudelijke chemicaliën voor een maximale duur van zeven dagen. De chemische reacties creëren kleurrijke patronen op de objecten. De relatief onschadelijke chemicaliën die Van der Eijk gebruikt, zijn niet vergelijkbaar met de gevaarlijke stoffen die worden gebruikt in de fijn- en bulk chemische industrie. Bovendien is de tijdschaal van Van der Eijks onderzoek niet te vergelijken met de tijdschalen waarin de Aarde aan deze chemicaliën wordt blootgesteld. Als deze relatief korte en milde contacten al zulke sterke reacties veroorzaken, wat voor reacties zullen zich dan onder het aardoppervlak vormen?

DISNOVATION.ORG and Nicolas Nova’s A BESTIARY OF THE ANTHROPOCENE questions what happens when technologies and their consequences are so profound and pervasive that everything on Earth becomes artificial to some degree.

Humanity’s hyperfocus on technical ‘advancement’ is not proof of its distinction from other ‘natural’ species, but rather a symptom of its believe in human exceptionalism. It is an attempt to transcend its earthbound faith yet has led to a moment in which the technosphere and biosphere merge. It is in this moment that the (man-made) distinction between the ‘natural’ and the ‘artificial’ is disrupted—that the world becomes one of artificial mountains, plastic flowers, drone- catching eagles, and radioactive mushrooms.

De hyperfocus van de mensheid op technische ‘vooruitgang’ is geen bewijs van haar onderscheid ten opzichte van andere ‘natuurlijke’ soorten, maar eerder een symptoom van haar geloof in het uitzonderlijke karakter van de mens. Het is een poging om aan haar aardgebonden lot te ontkomen, maar heeft geleid tot een moment waarop de technosfeer en de biosfeer samensmelten. Het (door de mens gecreëerde) onderscheid tussen ‘natuurlijk’ en ‘kunstmatig’ wordt doorbroken en de wereld wordt er één van kunstmatige bergen, plastic bloemen, drone-vangende adelaars en radioactieve paddenstoelen.
