& We had the pleasure to visit Valletta in Malta after the storm ⛈️ and the .eemn conference last week 🥰
It was inspiring to hear the conversations and see the network tackle some important challenges Early Music faces as a field
As Amsterdam’s 750th birthday celebrations continue, we’re sharing another gem from our À Amsterdam project — this time by the Belgian flutist and composer Antoine Mahaut, who spent about twenty years living and working in our city.
During his Amsterdam years, Mahaut published a flute method in both French and German, wrote music with flashes of the emerging Mannheim style, and generally made himself at home… until he abandoned us all and moved to Paris. (Some sources say he eventually retired to a French monastery to meditate on the beauty of the flute — we’ll allow it.)
Before his Parisian betrayal, he left Amsterdam with some truly wonderful works, including this elegant and expressive piece performed in our concert/recording session at the Waalse Kerk.

Our next video features Willem de Fesch (1687–1761), a composer whose music is full of charm, wit, and elegance. These five duets (from 30 Duetten voor Fluit of Viool) show him at his playful, inventive best: Fanfare, two Menuets, Largo, and a sparkling Rondo.
De Fesch was a towering figure in Amsterdam’s musical life — and funnily enough, also connected by family to Carl Rosier, our first video’s composer. Here, we get a glimpse of the social side of Baroque music: intimate duets made for friends, family, and admirers. Perfectly delightful!

Pietro Locatelli was a really, really fantastic violinist, and he knew it. Coming originally from Bergamo, he travelled through Italy and Germany before settling in Amsterdam in 1729. He’d already had some of his works published here and he clearly had a good business acumen too, because he started publishing his music under his own name just two years after arriving in Amsterdam. There are even accounts of him only allowing amateurs to see his Wednesday performances at Prinsengrcht 506 so that no other musicians could learn the secrets of his insanely good technique. The piece we’ve chosen is the second sonata of Opus 5, which is a beautiful representation of the grace, virtuosity and elegance which feature in a lot of his compositions.
Pietro Locatelli (1695–1764)
Sonata II (from Sonate a Tre per due Flauti e Basso per il Cembalo, Op. 5):

Our next video is a selection of pieces from Servaas de Koninck, a resident of Amsterdam from 1685 to his death in 1701. Seven of his opus numbers in a selection of genres were published by Estienne Roger, one of the leading publishers from Amsterdam at the time. These pieces demonstrate a mostly French style. Think of those fancy dutch restaurants with a full menu of french food. Delicious!

Our À Amsterdam series begins with this beautiful sonata by Carl Rosier — music composed, published, and performed in Amsterdam itself.
Recorded live in De Waalse Kerk, this project celebrates and the city’s rich musical history.

As we rapidly approach the end of Amsterdam’s 750th birthday celebration, we realised it was basically the only appropriate time to release a few more videos from our project at the Waalse Kerk, titled "à Amsterdam". We recorded the album in Amsterdam while living there during the COVID pandemic. The project celebrates Amsterdam’s publishing industry: music composed and published in Amsterdam by people living in Amsterdam, played on instruments made in Amsterdam — you get the picture.
Our first video features a relatively unknown but beautiful piece by Carl Rosier, whose differently spiced movements make a perfect introduction to this period of Amsterdam’s musical life. Rosier was active in Amsterdam from 1683–1699 as a composer, violinist and concert organiser. One of his daughters later married Willem de Fesch, who appears elsewhere on this album — so many layers of connection.
Stay tuned as we release more videos every week!
Carl Rosier (1640–1725)
