Will dancing emoji find a partner? Unicode considers 38 new designs

Shark, selfie and carrot emojis being mooted for release in 2016 – but there’s still no sign of the elusive redhead

Thirty eight new emoji are under consideration by the Unicode Consortium, the organisation which designs and approves emoji, for inclusion in its next release.

New emoji candidates include a pregnant woman, bacon and a partner for the dancing emoji woman in the red dress.

Unicode 9, an updated official list of approved emoji, is expected to be released around the summer of 2016. Once a Unicode update is released, Apple, Google and Microsoft are free to design the new emoji to add to their operating systems (hence why emoji vary between platforms).

In addition to the 38 emoji to reach the “candidate stage” of consideration, 15 more emoji have also been submitted to the Consortium. It is likely that not all will make the cut for next year.

The full list of prospective emoji can be found at Emojipedia, but examples include: shark, carrot and a person taking a selfie. The bride, Santa Claus and the dancing woman in red dress would all find partners. The website dedicated to all things emoji has even mocked up what some of the new additions might look like.

However, even with official approval under Unicode 9, unless the technology companies decide to implement the new characters, they may never be usable.

Unicode 8, which was approved in June 2015, and included 37 new emoji (examples: a taco and unicorn), has not been picked up by Apple, Google or Microsoft – with the exception of the set of racially diverse emoji.

We are bereft to report that, yet again, no redhead emoji is included in the list under consideration.

The Good Wife will mirror the real-life presidential race in new season

Joining the likes of Homeland and Scandal, the show will feature ‘ripped-from-the-headlines’ storylines with a Hillary Clinton-esque candidate

There could be yet another presidential candidate in the running for next year’s election after The Good Wife’s showrunner, Robert King, revealed that the show is going to pit fictional politician Peter Florrick against a Hillary Clinton-esque Democratic nominee in the drama’s seventh season.

Speaking with TVLine, King said the show is going to mirror the real-life presidential race.

“[When] the Iowa caucus happens [on 1 February], it’s going to happen in our show. We’re trying to parallel what’s happening on our show with what’s happening in reality,” he said.

He added: “If Peter runs, he is running against Hillary.” King said that trying to keep up with real-life political developments might prove tricky, adding that he’s “stunned in politics how things change overnight”.

Fellow executive producer Michelle King did say the writers wouldn’t be beholden to all developments in the race (for example, if Clinton does win the nomination that doesn’t mean Florrick can’t triumph in the show), but the Good Wife joins a growing list of shows in which art imitates life very closely.

Homeland’s new series, set in Berlin, will include ripped-from-the-headlines storylines featuring references to Isis, Edward Snowden and Vladimir Putin.

Scandal and Black Dynamite both featured episodes which mirrored and commented on the recent police shootings of unarmed black men in America.

Qualcomm promises its new chip will improve your next smartphone's camera while keeping it alive longer.

Qualcomm, the world's largest maker of chips for smartphones, shared details on its Snapdragon 820 chip, including a new Adreno 530 graphics processing unit and Spectra image signal processing unit -- two components that will lead to sharper looking images and power virtual-reality headsets.

The Snapdragon 820 is the processor Qualcomm is counting on to woo back Samsung, which earlier this year snubbed the chipmaker in favor of its own Exynos chip. Qualcomm and Samsung had been close partners for years, with Samsung using Snapdragon chips in many of its flagship phones, including last year's Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4. But Samsung's move dealt a blow to Qualcomm and its Snapdragon franchise of mobile chips.

Qualcomm thinks the Snapdragon 820 can turns things around. The differences consumers will notice in their next smartphones relate to the camera picture quality and battery life, said Tim Leland, the vice president of product management who runs Qualcomm's visual processing group.

Why Are Cats Attracted to People Who Don’t Like Them?

One of the ironies of cat behavior is how cats are attracted to people who don't like them. By deconstructing the behavior of cat haters, we cat lovers can learn a thing or two.

When humans don't care for cats, they try to avoid looking at them and at the same time keep an eye on them. They want to make sure that the cat isn't coming … Oh damn, here it comes, rubbing on my leg, jumping in my lap, purring.

Let's look at this from the cat's point of view. All aggression in the feline world starts with staring. Polite cats are demure; they look briefly and then look away. So when you meet a cat you want to be friends with, note its location in the room and avert your eyes.

When humans don't like cats, they try not to pet them. If the cat comes over, the person might instinctively pet it once, then he withdraws his hand and hopes the cat will go away. Of course, playing hard-to-get with a cat is one of the best ways to make friends. So if you want to be friends with a new cat, let it approach, offer your knuckle, and let the cat get your smell and pet itself against you (she will push into your knuckle and run her cheek along it). Then ignore her for a couple minutes while she sniffs your legs.

Once the cat has decided you are worthy, you can move to the next step: the full-stop pet. To do this, stroke the cat from the top of its head all the way off the tail. As you reach the end, gently cup your hand around the tail and continue the stroke as if the tail was 3 or 4 inches longer than it is. Do this just once. The cat will expect you to start another stroke at its head—but you don't. This unmet anticipation gets into the cat, like a repeating song lyric, and it will all but demand you pet it again. After a few minutes, you can do so, maybe even two or three times. The goal is to interrupt the petting when the cat expects more. Dirty pool—but very effective.

Finally, when you see a cat the second time, nod your head subtly at it when you enter the room. The cat will probably move its head in a similar way. Go through the demure look, the presentation of the knuckle, and the full-stop pet. At this point you are acquaintances with promise. You are ready to take it to the next level: the long blink.

Exclusive: Huge Python Captured At Shark Valley In Everglades National Park

A giant python captured at Shark Valley in Everglades National Park may be the second largest python ever caught in the State of Florida.
The snake, which measured 18 feet, 3 inches, was captured along the Shark Valley tram road on July 9th.
The largest snakes removed from the Everglades have exceeded 18 feet and 150 pounds. Snakes of this size are capable of ingesting large prey like deer and alligators according to US Geological Survey officials.

The Shark Valley snake was only 4 inches smaller and may be the second largest python captured in the state of Florida. However, Everglades National Park officials don’t officially track the size of the snakes that are captured outside of the park.
This snake was captured by a permitted python researcher who regularly works in Everglades National Park.
Burmese pythons are an invasive reptile with no natural predators, which appear to be wiping out most of the small mammals that once thrived in Everglades National Park.
The best news about this snake, according to park officials, is that it was removed from the wild which helps protect the diverse wildlife in Everglades National Park.
After the snake was captured, National Park Service and US Geological Survey interns who work on invasive species control projects, including python removal, were allowed to handle the snake to help them gain confidence and experience.

Essex wedding dance video goes viral 05/08/2015

A couple wowed their wedding guests with a first dance with a difference.
Instead of the traditional slow-dance, James Parris, 26, from Braintree, Essex, and his wife Beverley, 29, from Saffron Walden, performed a four-minute club-mix.
The couple were joined by members of Hip Hop Pop, a dance troupe Mrs Parris belongs to.
"James was a bit nervous, but he said he'd give it a go for me, and he secretly enjoyed it," she said.
"Unfortunately, he had to go to one rehearsal with his arm in a sling.
"We'd been on a joint stag and hen do, and I fell off a bucking bronco and landed on top of him. He wasn't too happy about that," she said.
The dance was choreographed by Jenny Bater-Sinclair, of the troupe, who later posted it on social media.
A week after the wedding, Mrs Parris said more than 200,000 people had watched the video on Facebook and YouTube.
