*NYSC at 53: Bayelsa State Coordinator Calls for Reflection, Innovation and Commitment to Nation Building*

The Bayelsa State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr Samuel Amaramiro Pepple, has charged Corps Members and officials to remain committed to national development, innovation and self-reliance as the scheme marks its 53rd anniversary.

Mr. Pepple made the call on Thursday, 22nd May 2026, during the celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the NYSC held in Bayelsa State.

Addressing Corps Members and officials during the anniversary lecture, the State Coordinator described the occasion as a moment of deep reflection on the purpose, impact and future of the scheme.

Speaking on the history of the NYSC, Mr. Pepple reminded everyone that the scheme was established on 22nd May 1973 by the Federal Government to foster reconciliation, unity and national integration after the Nigerian Civil War which lasted from 1967 to 1970. According to him, the war claimed over five million lives and left deep divisions across the country, making the creation of the scheme necessary for rebuilding trust and national cohesion among young Nigerians.

The State Coordinator noted that despite criticisms and controversies surrounding the NYSC over the years, the continued existence and relevance of the scheme after five decades remains remarkable. He stressed that many government establishments created during the same period have become inactive or extinct, while the NYSC has continued to function and impact lives across the country.

Describing the anniversary as a period of sober reflection, Mr. Pepple stated:
“Today is a day of commemoration of the 53rd anniversary of the NYSC and it is a day of great reflection.”
He urged Corps Members to look beyond the mandatory one-year national service and focus on developing practical skills that would make them self-reliant and productive in society. Emphasizing the importance of skill acquisition and hard work, he charged the Corps Members to take advantage of opportunities available to them during service.

According to him:
“If you have no skills, then you have nothing! So, you need your hands to work. You must be skillful and hard working.”

Mr. Pepple also encouraged both staff and Corps Members to contribute meaningful ideas towards improving the NYSC scheme and the development of Bayelsa State and Nigeria at large
He challenged participants with a thought-provoking question:

“Will this scheme die in your hands?”

The Coordinator further reminded everyone present that the future growth and development of Nigeria depends greatly on the efforts, creativity and contributions of young people serving under the scheme.

Also speaking at the event was Mrs. Essien Omawumi, Assistant Director, Human Resources, who explained that the 53rd anniversary celebration was being held simultaneously in all states of the federation. She shared her personal NYSC experience, recounting how she traveled for about twenty-one hours from Warri, Delta State, to her place of primary assignment during her service year.

According to her, the challenges she faced during service helped shape her into a stronger and bolder individual. She encouraged Corps Members to remain resilient and committed to the ideals of the scheme.

Mrs. Omawumi also led Corps Members and officials in an anniversary chant which drew enthusiastic participation from the audience:

“NYSC at 53, Keep shining, keep serving and make Nigeria proud.”

A major highlight of the celebration was the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake by the Assistant Director of Deployment and Relocation, who in his remarks paid tribute to the founding father of the scheme, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, for his vision and commitment to national unity through the establishment of the NYSC.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Pepple expressed appreciation to all officials, Corps Members and guests for attending the event. He reiterated that the responsibility of building a better Nigeria rests on the collective ideas, efforts and dedication of every citizen, especially the youth.
