Dear friends,

Ahead of the World Water Day commemoration on Saturday 22 March 2025, a coalition of water justice groups in Nigeria will today release a report - Dry Taps: A Damning Verdict on the State of Water Utilities in Nigeria.

The report examines 6 states in Nigeria - Lagos, Oyo, Kano, Enugu, Edo and Kogi - and exposes how water utilities built with public funds have been deliberately neglected by the state governments, starved of funds, and staff demotivated to ensure the collapse the utilities and ultimately pave the way for their privatisation.

The authors reject privatisation and demand instead that the Nigerian authorities declare a state of emergency in the water sector and uphold democratic public control of water utilities.

The investigation was carried out by the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), the Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI), Ecumenical Water Network Africa (EWNA), Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN), Citizens Free Service Forum (CFSF), New Life Community Care Initiative (NELCCI) and Socio-Economic Research and Development Center (SERDEC).

WRECA, established in 1975 was responsible for the construction of earth dams, roads, canals and other civil engineering projects. Public sector enthusiasts believe WRECA is one of the organisations that can drive the Public-Public Partnership model of managing public assets and utilities.
