My wife told me not to tell her mother that I'd lost my job.
She said her mom would panic, start asking questions, and make everything worse.
So for three months, every time her mother called, I pretended everything was normal.
Then one afternoon she showed up unannounced.
There I was, sitting in the living room at 11 a.m. on a weekday when I should have been at work. The moment she walked in and saw me, I knew the secret was finished.
She looked at me, glanced at the television, then looked back at me.
"Why aren't you at work?" she asked.
The room went silent.
Before I could answer, my wife jumped in and explained everything. She told her mother that I'd lost my job months earlier, that the market was tough, that I was applying everywhere, and that we'd kept it quiet because we didn't want anyone worrying.
I expected a lecture, concern or at least a dozen questions.
Instead, her mother listened patiently and asked me just one thing.
âHave you been getting up every morning and looking for work?â
I told her yes.
She nodded, turned to my wife, and simply said, âGoodâ
My wife looked confused. So did I.
Then her mother said something I'll never forget.
âIf a man loses his job and stops trying, that's when you worry. If he loses his job and keeps trying, then feed himâ
With that, she walked into the kitchen and started cooking.
For the rest of the afternoon, she treated me exactly the same way she always had.
She didnât pity, she didnât judge and didnât give me long speeches about responsibility or finances.
What I got was a hot meal and the quiet confidence of someone who had lived long enough to know that setbacks happen.
My wife had spent months worrying about what her mother would think of me.
Meanwhile, her mother had apparently seen enough of life to understand that a person's value isn't tied to whether they're having a good year.
I found another job a few weeks later, but that's not what stayed with me.
What stayed with me was the fact that on one of the days I felt most like a failure, the person I expected to judge me the hardest didn't judge me at all.
She instead made lunch and somehow, that helped more than anything anyone could have said.
Copied.
Losing a job is hard already in a country like ours.
Make living in Nigeria easy as much as you can for your fellow Nigerian.

âMy wife gave birth to our baby girl three days ago and instead of enjoying fatherhood peacefully, I secrâŹtly did a DNA test behind her back.
Before some of you j„dge me too quickly, hear me out.
During the pregnancy, a lot changed between us. She became more protective of her phone, more distant emotionally, and there were moments that honestly made me unc0mf0rtable.
On top of that, my friends kept putting fe@r in my head with stories of men raising children that were not theirs. I tried ignoring it, but the doubt kept eating me alive.
I stayed with her throughout l@bor. I watched her scre@m in p@in for hours. I held her hand, prayed for her, and almost cri&d when our daughter was born. But even after seeing everything she went through, the doubt still didn't leave my mind.
The next morning while she was sleeping in the hospital, I quietly arranged for a DNA test.
The result came back yesterday.
The baby is mine.
I felt relieved and decided to make a joke about it online. I posted, "Just did DNA test right after birth Baby girl is mine."
I thought people would laugh and move on, but my wife saw the post and completely broke down. She started crying and asked me how I could watch her s„ffer for nine months, push a child out, and still think she che@ted on me.
Now she says the issue is not even the DNA test anymore, but the fact that I never trusted her in the first place. She said she feels humili@ted and betr@yed, especially because I posted it publicly. She's now talking about leaving the marriage after she leaves the hospital. Honestly, I don't even know what to think anymore. Some people are telling me every man has the right to protect himself, while others are saying | d£str0yed my marriage with s„spicion.
So I want honest opinions.
Was I wr0ng for sâŹcrÂŁtly doing the DNA test, or is my wife overreacting?âŠâ Married man cries out
