Police officer k!lled after being run over during a stop and search in Lagos
A 20-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, has allegedly k!lled a police Sergeant, Johnson Okediji, during a stop-and-search duty along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed that the sad incident occurred on Saturday, 26th September 2026.
While briefing journalists about the activities of the Command in the month of September, CP Fatai said police officers had signalled a Lexus ES 350,with number plate FKJ 223 KX, driven by Olumide Olusola,.to stop.
He explained that the driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side.
The police boss added that the suspect knocked down Sergeant Okediji and dragged him underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to stop him.
He said the driver was eventually chased and arrested. However in the process, the officer sustained multiple fractures and serious injuries to the head.
CP Fatai said he was taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to LASUTH, where he was unfortunately pronounced de@d on arrival.
“His remains have been deposited at Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered to the station.”
In a brief interview with journalists during his parade, the driver said the brake of the vehicle failed and all attempts to stop it also failed.
“I did not k!ll the policeman intentionally, it was due the vehicle’s brake failure,” he said

OGUN DEEP SEA PORT: A PRIORITY OR A POLITICAL PROJECT?
Yes, I am an Igbo man.
And yes, I want to see the South East and South South have a functional, world-class seaport. It is a legitimate aspiration for balanced national development. The geographical challenges of the South East are real, but they do not excuse the complete failure of leadership over the last 60 years to design an economic map that works for everyone.
But if we must be honest with ourselves, we must ask an uncomfortable question that cuts across tribe:
IS A NEW SEAPORT THE TOP PRIORITY FOR NIGERIA OR FOR OGUN STATE TODAY?
Last week, Ogun State signed an MOU to build a Deep Sea Port. On the surface, it sounds like progress. But when you look at the numbers, you are forced to ask if it is a priority project or just another political project.
1. A PORT WITHOUT PRODUCTION IS JUST AN IMPORT GATE
This is the fact we avoid. Nigeria's non-oil import is about ₦14.52 trillion per quarter. Our non-oil export is about ₦3.72 trillion. We import almost four times what we export.
In shipping terms, we have a negative outbound cargo of 80 to 90 percent. Containers come in full and leave empty.
Around 2004, I drove past the vast oil palm plantations established by Sam Mbakwe in Imo State. Kilometres of palm lying fallow, wasting away. Today, we still have those plantations lying fallow across the South East, South South, and Ogun itself, yet we are fighting for ports to import palm oil from Malaysia.
What will the Ogun Deep Sea Port export? If 90 percent of the ships that berth there will leave empty like in Lagos, we have not built a seaport. We have built a very expensive warehouse for imports that will further kill our naira.
2. OGUN'S REAL ADVANTAGE IS NOT A PORT, IT IS PROXIMITY
With its massive landmass and 5-minute border with Lagos, Ogun State should have depopulated Lagos in the last 30 years, both in human and industrial terms. It has not.
Ogun is already number two in IGR in Nigeria despite weak internal roads, poor power, and unplanned industrial estates. That tells you everything. Ogun's economic advantage over Lagos is superior, if only it would act like it.
The priority for Ogun is not to build a port to compete with Lagos. The priority is to build the infrastructure to replace Lagos as the factory of Nigeria.
What Ogun needs today is:
• An internal road network that connects Agbara, Atan-Ota, Sagamu and Ijebu to Lagos in under 45 minutes
• Industrial clusters with 24-hour gas power that make it cheaper to produce in Ogun than to import through Lagos
• A tax and land system that tells a manufacturer in Ladipo: "Move your factory 20km to Ogun and your profit will double"
If you do that, factories will move on their own. And when factories move, the deep sea port becomes inevitable, not political.
The question for the promoters of the Ogun Deep Sea Port is simple: Is your target to serve the Lagos import market again, or are you planning to ensure that 90 percent of ships that berth at your port leave with finished goods MADE IN OGUN?
If you cannot answer that with the names of 1,000 factories ready to export, it is a political project.
3. THE LESSON FOR THE SOUTH EAST
This same standard must apply to my own region. The South East does not need a seaport as a tribal entitlement. The South East needs a seaport because it is a productive powerhouse that is being strangled.
Aba alone produces over 50 million pairs of shoes and garments annually that struggle to find a way to the world. Nnewi fabricates and builds. Onitsha Main Market holds enough inventory to fill ships daily. That is a production-first argument for a port, and it is unassailable.
If we argue for ports without first arguing for production, we will always lose the argument and be branded as tribal agitators.
CONCLUSION: PRODUCTION BEFORE PORTS
My advice to the Federal Government and to all State Governments is this: We must emphasize productivity before we agitate for ports, even though ports are important.
Nigeria has 250 million people. Our first national priority must be to produce what we consume, and then produce enough to export. That is the only time our fight for seaports becomes genuine and economically sustainable.
We cannot be fighting for seaports when we have not planned to become productive.
Under the Nigerian Growth Compact 2027-2042, we call this principle: Conversion before Construction.
Convert our land to food. Convert our gas to power. Convert our people to skilled labour. Convert our raw materials to finished goods.
Then, and only then, build the ports to carry that wealth to the world.
Any Presidential candidate who cannot convert our vast natural resources into equity to create wealth for Nigerians from the first day in office has no business asking for the mandate of Nigerians.
Production is our national priority.

DELTA GOVT NULLIFIES SUSPENSION OF ONISHE OF UBULU-UKU, CANCELS ONLINE UDC ELECTION, ASKS OBI OF UBULU-UKU TO RETURN HOME FROM ABROAD
Says Obi Lacks Power To Suspend Onishe Of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, Ibori - Ubulu
The Delta State Government has declared as null and void the purported suspension of Chief James Asika Onwordi Ibori-Ubulu, the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, by the traditional ruler of the kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Noah Chukwuka Akaeze, Agbogidi, Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom.
The Government also nullified the recently conducted online election of the Ubulu-Uku Development Council (UDC), describing it as illegal and contrary to existing laws regulating community associations in the State.
The Government's position was made known during a peace and conflict resolution meeting convened by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Sir (Chief) Edwin Uzor, with the Ubulu-Uku Council of Chiefs (also known as the Obi-in-Council) and security agencies following petitions and counter-petitions arising from the crisis in Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, Aniocha South Local Government Area.
The Government stated that the alleged suspension of Chief Asika did not follow due process as prescribed by law.
The State government also directed the Obi of Ubulu-Uku to return home from abroad where he currently lives starting that the Obi can not be ruling from abroad .
"The statutory architecture is clear. The power to suspend a traditional chief is not left at large in the hands of an individual traditional ruler. It is specifically vested in the Executive Council of the State subject to conditions prescribed by law.
"Where the Executive Council resolves that another authority should exercise that power, the law prescribes the manner in which that delegation must occur.
"Therefore, the suspension that was purportedly made by the Obi on Chief James Asika, Onishe of Ubulu-Uku is hereby declared null and void. Due process was not followed," the Government declared.
The State Government cited Section 28, Sub-sections 1 to 6 of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and Chiefs Law, as well as the position already taken by the Office of the Director of Chieftaincy in the Governor's Office, to support its decision.
The Government also warned uncles and relatives of the monarch to desist from interfering in the administration of the kingdom and to channel their advice to the King through proper means.
On the controversial UDC online election, the Government ruled that the exercise was in violation of the Delta State Regulation of Community Development Associations Law 2021 and the guidelines of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development.
"The Office of the Special Adviser has considered the circumstances surrounding the purported online election conducted to constitute the leadership of the Ubulu Development Council.
"The government position is based principally on the Delta State Regulation of Community Development Association Law 2021 and on the facts presented concerning the conduct of the purported election without the involvement of Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development," the official stated.
He posed the legal question as to whether an online election conducted internally without compliance with statutory regulations and ministry guidelines can validly produce an executive committee recognized under Delta State Law.
Consequently, the Government declared that "the online election that was said to be conducted cannot hold and it is null and void."
The Government further directed the Traditional Council working in consonance with the community to organize a fresh, all-inclusive election which must be supervised and observed by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development.
"What that means is that a letter must be sent to the Ministry of Women Affairs so that you agree on how the election would go. Nobody can conduct election on their own," Government emphasized.
The decision has put to rest months of tension in Ubulu-Uku over the leadership of the UDC and the status of the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku in the kingdom.
Responding, the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku, Chief James Asika Onwordi and the Ubulu-Uku Council of Chiefs (also known as the Obi-in-Council) and youth body said: "We have been on these issues for long and we are happy the Government has settled this.
"We start by thanking God Almighty for a day like this.
We appreciate God because peace has finally returned to our community.
We are grateful to the Delta State Government.
We have had these issues for a long time.
Thank God the issues have been resolved.
Ignorance is not an excuse in law.
"We will continue on peace building in Ubulu-Uku Kingdom.
Our people will continue to be law abiding in the state. “
