What is Hypertension?
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of blood pushing against your artery walls is consistently too high. A normal reading is around 120/80 mmHg. When it stays at 130/80 mmHg or higher, it may be considered hypertension.
It’s often called the “silent killer” because most people don’t notice any symptoms — yet it can quietly damage the heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels over time. According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is one of the leading causes of heart disease and stroke worldwide.
Common Causes Include: • Too much salt in the diet
• Being overweight
• Lack of exercise
• Smoking
• Excess alcohol
• Stress
• Family history
• Certain medical conditions like kidney disease
How to Avoid It: ✔ Eat more fruits and vegetables, reduce salt
✔ Exercise regularly (at least 30 minutes most days)
✔ Maintain a healthy weight
✔ Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
✔ Manage stress
✔ Check your blood pressure regularly
