Fowl Cholera alert💥💥: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention, and Treatment🤗
Fowl cholera, also known as Pasteurellosis, is a highly contagious bacterial disease affecting poultry worldwide.
It's caused by Pasteurella multocida, a gram-negative bacterium that can lead to significant economic losses in the poultry industry.
Causes of Fowl Cholera
1. Infected birds shedding bacteria through respiratory secretions, f***s, and saliva.
2. Contaminated feed, water, and equipment.
3. Poor ventilation, overcrowding, and stress.
4. Wild birds and animals carrying the bacteria.
Symptoms of Fowl Cholera
1. Sudden onset of illness and death.
2. Labored breathing, coughing, and nasal discharge.
3. Pale or blue-tinged comb, wattles, and legs.
4. Greenish or sulfurous diarrhea.
5. Swollen and inflamed joints.
Prevention of Fowl Cholera
1. Biosecurity measures: isolate new birds, disinfect equipment, and maintain clean facilities.
2. Vaccination programs.
3. Proper ventilation and spacing.
4. Regular monitoring for signs of disease.
5. Eradicate wild birds and rodents. Stop letting those local chickens or pigeon settle in your farm surroundings 😏
Treatment of Fowl Cholera
1. Antibiotics (e.g., sulfonamides, tetracyclines).
2. Supportive care: fluids, electrolytes, and nutritional supplements.
Especially for small scale farmers who can afford to give sick birds individual attention. Moisten some feed in water and patiently feed. Administer water/drugs with syringe. Most times sick birds die of dehydration and starvation before their bodies get a chance to recover.
3. Disinfection and sanitation.
Complications and Control Measures
1. Chronic respiratory problems.
2. Decreased egg production.
3. Increased mortality all leading to economic losses🥵.
Implementing integrated control measures, like biosecurity, vaccination, and antibiotic therapy, can effectively manage fowl cholera outbreaks.
