The Modern Record label came into being in 1945, it began specialising in Rhythm & Blues & Soul music from the late 50's onwards. As well as the artists featured on the photo they also recorded Etta James, BB King, The Ikettes, John Lee Ho**er & many more.
They supplied so many tracks that became standards on the Rare Soul scene, like this one from Californian artist, the late Mary Love which also got released on the UK Stateside label, from 1966 "Lay This Burden Down".

APRIL 20
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO RESPECTED JAMAICAN SINGER / SONGWRITER / PERFORMER —
SON OF THE LEGENDARY BOB MARLEY :
STEPHEN “RAGGA” MARLEY !! 🇯🇲🎤🔥

Stephen “Ragga” Marley — born April 20, 1972 in Wilmington, Delaware and raised between Kingston and Miami — is one of the most gifted, versatile, and spiritually grounded artists of his generation, a musician whose life has been woven into the fabric of reggae history from birth and whose work carries the unmistakable depth, discipline, and soul of the Marley lineage. The second‑oldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Stephen grew up inside the heart of the Wailers’ universe, learning harmony, rhythm, and stagecraft from childhood while touring the world with the Melody Makers alongside Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella, helping shape classics like “Tomorrow People,” “Conscious Party,” and “Look Who’s Dancing.” As he matured, Stephen emerged as a master producer and multi‑instrumentalist, guiding the sound of his siblings and producing landmark albums for Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, including the Grammy‑winning Halfway Tree and the revolutionary Welcome to Jamrock, which reshaped global reggae and dancehall. His own solo career blossomed with Mind Control (2007), a richly layered blend of roots, blues, hip‑hop, and soul that earned him another Grammy and confirmed his status as a visionary creator. Subsequent works like Revelation Pt. 1: The Root of Life and Revelation Pt. 2: The Fruit of Life expanded his palette even further, exploring deep roots vibrations, dub textures, and cross‑genre collaborations while maintaining a spiritual core rooted in Rastafari and the teachings of his father. On stage, Stephen is a force of nature — calm yet powerful, humble yet commanding — channeling the ancestral fire of the Marley legacy with a voice that echoes Bob’s timbre while carrying its own weight, warmth, and authority. Today, Stephen Marley stands as a pillar of modern reggae: a keeper of the flame, a meticulous craftsman, a cultural ambassador, and one of the most respected artists in contemporary Jamaican music.
