The Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, known as IReV, while allowing manual collation to serve as a fallback where technology fails.

The protest, tagged ‘Occupy National Assembly’, saw former presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday joined protesters to the National Assembly in Abuja to oppose the Senate’s decision on the electronic transmission of election results.

However, the protest was organised by Nigerian youths, pro-democracy activists and civil society groups who are demanding that lawmakers reverse their position on the electronic transmission clause in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

In a dramatic twist, the Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked John Odigie-Oyegun, a former national chairman of the party and ex-governor of Edo, to repay what it described as outstanding loans and accumulated membership dues totalling over N150 million.

These were alleged liabilities said to have been incurred during Odigie-Oyegun’s years as a member and leader of the APC, including his stint as pioneer national chairman.
