The Silent Drum (African Folktale)
Why God Ran From Earth

STORY TIME: Long ago, when the world was new, there was a land in the heart of Africa called Viti. It was a land blessed with rich soil, and the sky was a soft blanket that hung so low you could feel its warmth. In those days, God did not live far away in the heavens; He was a close and quiet neighbor. His presence rested in the low-hanging clouds, and the rain was said to be His gentle touch.
The people of Viti knew this. If a storm grew too loud, an elder would step from his hut and say, “Father, be gentle. Your children are listening.” And the thunder would soften to a distant hum.
In this land lived a woman named Chacha. She was a woman of quiet strength, whose hands were rarely still. As you see her in the picture, she would often crouch by the entrance of her family’s hut, her brow furrowed in concentration as she skillfully peeled yams for the evening meal. Her husband, Dokata, was a hunter, and the joy of her life was the sound of her children playing as the sun went down.
But one evening, that joy was replaced by a heavy silence.
Chacha had peeled the yams and set her large wooden mortar on the ground, ready for pounding. The children were gathered, their eyes wide with hunger, waiting for the smell of their father’s catch to mix with the scent of the cooking yam.
But Dokata returned from the forest with his shoulders slumped and his hands empty. There was no meat for the soup.
Chacha looked from her husband’s weary face to her hungry children, and a deep ache settled in her heart. It was an ache of worry, of disappointment, of fear for the night ahead. Without a word, she picked up the long, heavy pestle and began to pound the yam.
Up above, God watched from the soft clouds, His heart full of love for the people below.
But Chacha did not see Him. Her world had shrunk to the mortar and the gnawing hunger in her home. Her frustration grew with every heavy strike of the pestle. Thump. The sound was hollow. Thump. A tear escaped her eye and traced a path through the dust on her cheek. Thump. Her arms ached, but her heart ached more.
In a final surge of distress, she lifted the pestle with all her might, forgetting everything but the weight of her sorrow. It rose higher and higher…
And its smooth, worn end struck God, who was resting just above on a low, curtain-like cloud.
There was no lightning. No roar of thunder.
Only a sudden, deep silence that fell over the entire land.
God touched the place where the pestle had hit, not with anger, but with a sorrow that was older than the mountains. He looked down at Chacha, still lost in her earthly pain, and a whisper moved through the leaves on the trees.
“They cannot see Me anymore.”
And slowly, with infinite gentleness, God began to rise. The clouds rose with Him, pulling away from the earth. The sky stretched, growing vast and distant. He drew the heavens up, far beyond the reach of human hands and human sorrows, until He was gone from sight.
That evening, the people of Viti felt a new kind of emptiness. The air was thinner. The sky was farther away. For the first time, they felt truly alone.
From that day forward, prayers had to travel a great distance to be heard.
The elders gathered, their faces filled with a deep loss, and they told their children, “Once, God lived with us. But a moment of human pain, a heart blinded by its own troubles, sent Him away.”
