UNRULY PASSENGER!

An unruly passenger is any passenger whose behaviour disrupts the safety, security or order of a flight or airport operations. From refusing instructions at the check-in through boarding process to (ground rage) to crew directives are all unruly behaviour, any act of non compliance both security and safety directives which may jeopardize the safety of the flight amounts to UNRULY PASSENGER aside the possibility of denied boarding one risk being charged with a criminal case.

There are two salient issues here which have to do with the approach of the passenger in question which are verbal and physical abuse.

Recently, we had a case of a passenger that verbally abused a crew over stowing of cabin luggage in the overhead cabin, as a matter of fact the pilot in command already taxing out to the runway had a taxi return to the stand, the passenger in question was offloaded and taken to the airport aviation security for interrogation, to our chagrin she was bold to tell us that she never touched her (crew) but only gave her a serious warning unfortunately she has committed verbal abuse, long and short story, she did not go on the flight, that particular ticket was cancelled and she wrote undertaking of good behaviour or else should would have been handed over to the law enforcement agents for prosecution.

As passengers let us be aware that verbal abuse ( ground rage) is an unruly behaviour and no airline will take on board an intending passenger that verbally abuses a staff in the process of security checks, check-in or boarding on ground as one who says nine must definitely say ten, if he is aggressive on ground which is a red flag, you can imagine if he gets at thirty thousand miles above sea level hence offloading such UNRULY PASSENGER is the next button to activate.

Every case of physical abuse or assault started from verbal abuse possibly from the check-in process ( Excess luggage, delayed flight, late arrival at the airport, non compliance to procedures and then refusal to switch off phone, seat belt or cabin luggage) before escalating to physical, in this part of the world, the notion is only until one touches another person physically forgetting that verbal abuse is also a crime in aviation according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO Annex 17 as domesticated in the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations NCAR 2006 part 17.

Remember to follow all instructions and treat both staff and fellow passengers with respect.

When this happens, all checked -in luggage will not come on the flight rather airlines make arrangements to ensure the affected luggage are sent within the earliest possible time. This could be done through another airline (Rush) or the airline's next flight.

This is different from misrouting or short landed luggage as a result of the airline's carelessness.

There has been hues and cries concerning the hike in air fares in this festive season, airline operators has been called unprintable names, accused of greed and exploitation. Most affected are south east and partly south south for obvious reasons because there is always a mass return of diaspora South easterners from all nooks and crannies.

The question is, are airline operators actually guilty as charged? Well let me attempt a professional explanation from there we can deduce and make our unbiased judgement.

It is unarguable and crystal clear that within the period under review that inbound flights to those affected places are fully booked, now has anyone thought about the cost of operating the flight almost empty on outbound out of those places? Each aircrafts has a certain number of passengers on board that will make the airline break even, if the book load is not up to that number depending on the seat configuration of that aircraft with the double taxations, hike in aviation fuel, difficulties in procuring spare parts etc the airline will be running at a loss, how much more when the seats are almost empty hence airlines must share the loss of those empty seats on the inbound passengers or else the flight may not likely operate till a full house is sold but this will not be palatable to passengers, one thing the passengers will not take is rescheduling, delay or cancellation. For the flight to operate on schedule then the fare will not remain the same.

Even bus transport companies, double their charges because the bus must blow empty out of the affected places, with the higher demand of the bus inbound East, no transport company will wait to have a full bus before returning with increasing demand out there yet the bus must be fueled to return.

Let us be circumspect and understand the rudiments of the these transport companies and reason with them, they are not wicked but market forces.
