PROLOGUE

Leaving home

The dark canvas of the vast firmament, speckled with thousands of shimmering lights, stretched motionless over the stirring world. Soon, the brilliance of the sun would arrive, marking the start of a new day for all of life. For many, it was a time of renewal, of expectation. But for one, there was only consternation and uncertainty.

Behind the patio door, a set of striking amber eyes watched the sky in silence, their depths revealing a storm of emotion. The world seemed alien; this place, an illusion. The waters of the lake several metres away were calm and tranquil, as they always were. He was alone, deprived of the love and family he once knew. His jaw set. It had only taken two days for everything he cherished to become so obscure that they suddenly seemed trite. All those things would soon vanish into thin air, but that silent tug at his heart would not allow him to let it all go willingly, despite the pained anger he felt like a thorn in his heart. And now, after everything, he was being given up by the very people who were supposed to protect him.

Flickers of charged emotion crossed his unfocused gaze as he looked east, as many as those that right at this moment made his heart pound with alarming ferocity. The feeling was strange, yet oddly familiar. Maybe it was because his life had flipped upside down in just two days. Maybe it was something else. Either way, he did’nt care. Today would be a turning point in his life; and probably for the worse. He might as well get this over with.

“Are you okay, Harvey?”......

Wehnersen-To Uncertainty (Prologue)

Joanne had a slender figure, an entrancing laugh, and was of average height. Her beautiful brown hair cascaded down her blue tracksuit suit jacket in smooth, curled folds. Her grey eyes made Harvey think of the moon, expelling light in darkness.
He was going to miss her, no doubt, and Russell, his foster dad and most of all, Patty, his sister and best friend. He felt overwhelmed by hundreds of emotions as the car backed out onto the street. Joanne's scurrying steps took her to the sidewalk where she waved to him as the vehicle changed gears. Harvey placed his palm on the window and kept it there until the car removed her from his sight.
Turning from the glass, he steeled himself for what was laid up in store for him.
What next?

Continuation:

"Kieran," the official said his fist word to Harvey in English. "That's my given name. It's nice meeting you." He put out his hand for a handshake. Harvey took it.
"Hello, Mr. Deacon."
After the pleasantries, Deacon clasped his hand behind his tall frame. "When you're ready."He said to Joanne with a knowing smile and walked out of earshot.
Headlights appeared from a distance down the street with the sound of an incoming motor. In a moment, a four-wheel drive whizzed past the house, leaving behind a weak beam of red lights. In the calm that returned, Joanne studied her foster son.
Harvey had his eyes averted from hier face. She knew how he felt, but there was no balm to soothe the hurt that had been inflicted. And it was all her fault.
"I am sorry..." she began and stopped. "We are sorry about all this. It was wrong for us to..."
"Apology won't change anything," Harvey interrupted, his voice devoid of emotion. "Maybe this will be good fo me." He shrugged and looked at his foster mom's soft face. Tears had converged in her eyes. His heart ached. He tried, but no more words would form.
"Tell Patty I love her. Bye."

Exhaling, Harvey turned his face to the window. The morning sky had brightened, with a few streaks of sunlight heralding the new day. Taking in his foster mum's profile, he beheld her fro the last time.

Wehnersen-To Uncertainty (Prologue)

"Right," Harvey remarked blandly, jumping up from the sofa. Picking up his pods, he had not taken two steps when Clint asked, "You are leaving for the capital?"
"Yes." He replied in a curt tone and turned into the lit hallway.
Clint said nothing as the hologram faded into nothingness.

Listening intently to the low voices out on the driveway, Harvey stood discreetly behind the front door with his eyebrows furrowed, in an effort to decipher the words. Bits and pieces were familiar to him, the rest were a stack of gibberish - they talked in French and it just wasn't really his bag.
Giving up, he bit his lower lip in anxiety. The time had come. 'Run away', an ominous whisper from within his subconscious scoffed. He felt a tingling sensation in his ears. Instinctively, he raised his hand, and paused, waited, his hand in mid-air, until the feeling subsided.
"Screw it." Harvey muttered, stepping over the threshold into full view.
Walking over to the driveway with unflinching steps, he assessed his es**rt within a six-second timeframe.
Quite tall and of average build, the man's dark hair was impeccably combed to frame an unfathomable face. Clad in a double-breasted suit, he had the bearing of a high-ranked official with a respect-demanding charisma.
"Oh there he is," Joanne, Harvey's foster mum, announced at the sound of his approach.
The official had a small smile on his face as he inquisitvely watched the dark-haired, amber-eyed teen stand before them. Harvey caught the look. The man was also assessing him. Apparently, he had already reached his conclusion when he glanced at Joanne.
"Forgive my manners," she said quickly and motioned to her foster son. "This is Harvey. Harvey," she turned to him. "Meet Mr. Deacon."

Turning his face away, Harvey thought, 'you have no idea'. At his silence, the floating, shape-shifting hologram before him retreated.
"There's no point in that, Clint," Harvey shook his head. "It won't help."
The AI was mute for a moment. "I'm sorry. But I am concerned about your state of mental health."
Harvey shut his eyes and rubbed his temples with pent-up frustration. Clint filed away the scan results in his 'Health Records' database.
"This will help." Clint declared.
Harvey's pods came out of standby with a soft chime, and a pleasant, soothing tune flowed in.
"Thanks, but no thanks." Harvey popped the pods out of his ears and let them rest on the side table. He sat hunched on the corner sofa, his head hung down in thought. The hologram watched Harvey's body language silently, as the tiny arm of a small antique clock in the wall system ticked away towards dawn.
"What's the time?" Harvey asked, not raising his head.
"5:59 a.m, thirty minutes till sunrise."
"You always have to include additional information."
"Maybe I need new coding." Clint joked.
Harvey failed to supress a smile. "Don't make me laugh."
The hologram faded out into an image of the driveway. "A matt black official vehicle is pulling into the driveway."
Harvey raised his head slightly at Clint's announcement with weary eyes. "What's the distance between Nova Springs and San Altair?"
A virtual map showing the road networks crissrossing the northern provinces emerged from the cam footage. "The single quickest route os the NW. Interstate 031, a distance of 182.8 miles from here. At an average speed of 80 miles per hour, arrival should be made in two and a half hours."
