Adaora sat by the riverbank, the golden rays of the setting sun casting a warm glow on her face. The village, always buzzing with life, now seemed peaceful and serene. She hummed a familiar tune, her voice carrying across the water. The breeze was gentle, playing with her hair as she waited for him—Chijioke, the man who had stolen her heart without saying a word.

As she watched the river flow, memories of their first meeting came rushing back. It was two years ago, when she had been collecting water from the river, and Chijioke had been fishing, as usual. He had looked up and their eyes had locked for the briefest of moments. She had smiled shyly, and he, with his rugged charm, had smiled back. Since then, their paths had crossed time and time again, always leading to conversations that seemed to last for hours.

"Na you again, Adaora?" Chijioke’s voice broke her thoughts, deep and soothing. She turned to see him walking towards her, his fishing basket in hand.

"Na me o," she laughed softly, her eyes twinkling. "I dey wait for you, as usual."

He grinned, settling beside her. “I no go ever leave you waiting, my love. You know say, na river work I dey do, but you dey always be my priority.”

Adaora’s heart fluttered. He always had a way with words. Simple, but always filled with sincerity. “I no go fit live without you, Chijioke. Every time I hear the river, I remember you, your laughter, your stories…”

"Don’t go start that now," he teased, nudging her gently. "You go make me blush."

She laughed, her hand brushing against his. "I serious o. You don’t know how much I admire you. You work hard, you never complain. You make everything seem so easy."

Chijioke’s smile faded slightly. "Adaora, you know say life no be easy for person like me. But with you, I fit carry the whole world. Na you be my strength. Even when I no get money, when the day be tough, when the fish no dey bite, I remember your smile and I know say everything go better."

Adaora’s eyes softened, and she took his hand in hers. "Chijioke, you don’t need to be rich for me to love you. I don’t care about the things you don’t have. What matters to me is your heart. You’re the man who makes me feel safe, loved, and treasured. I don’t need anything else.”

The two of them sat in silence for a moment, watching the river flow past, the sound of water soothing their hearts. It wasn’t always easy. They had faced challenges—his family had questioned his choice to be with her, claiming she was from a different background. Adaora’s parents had urged her to focus on marriage to someone “more suitable.” But love, they both knew, had its own rules.

"You remember when my father said I should not see you again?" Adaora asked, breaking the silence.

Chijioke’s expression darkened for a moment. "How could I forget? But you know me now. I no dey run away from what I want. And I want you. I no care wetin people talk."

Chijioke squeezed her hand. "I go fight for you till the end, Adaora. You and me, we’re meant to be."

Adaora smiled, her heart swelling with happiness. "I never thought I would find someone like you, Chijioke. You’re my home, my peace."

The days that followed were filled with more moments of joy and love. They spent hours together, laughing and talking about their dreams, their plans for the future. They weren’t rich, but in each other, they found the wealth of love that money could never buy. Every time Chijioke returned from the river, he would bring her a gift—sometimes a fish, sometimes a flower, but always something from his heart.

One evening, as they sat by the river once more, Chijioke turned to her with a serious look on his face.

"Adaora, I get one thing I wan talk to you about."

Her heart skipped a beat. "What’s it, Chijioke?"

"I no wan ever lose you. I want you to be my wife. I no get all the money in the world, but I get the love of a lifetime to offer. Will you marry me, Adaora?" He held up a simple, hand-carved ring.

Adaora’s eyes filled with tears. "Chijioke, I thought you’d never ask," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Yes! Yes, I will marry you. No one else can make me feel the way you do."

With that, they sealed their promise with a kiss under the setting sun, the river flowing beside them as if it too was celebrating their love. In that moment, they both knew that no matter the obstacles life might throw their way, their love would always be their greatest treasure.

And so, the love story of Adaora and Chijioke continued, growing stronger with each passing day, rooted in the village they both loved, and blossoming in the hearts they had pledged to one another forever.
