Awujale Throne: Why Tradition Must Prevail Over Sentiment

(Opinion Series 5)

- Alhaji Korede Quadri (KQ), FCIB

The Awujale stool remains one of the most revered traditional institutions in the South West of Nigeria, commanding respect, history and deep cultural significance. It is not a stool that can be trivialised or diminished by sentiment, influence or material considerations. Rather, it is a sacred institution that must continually be treated with the seriousness it deserves, rooted firmly in the customs and traditions of Ijebu-Ode in Ijebuland.

In moments of transition, such as the one Ijebu-Ode currently faces, it becomes even more important to reflect on the enduring values that have sustained the institution over time. These values include integrity, adherence to tradition, and an unwavering commitment to due process. Without these, the sanctity of the stool risks erosion.

One significant figure whose role cannot be overlooked in this delicate period is the Ogbeni-Oja, Chief Dr. Sunny Kuku. His appointment is one that many across Ijebu Ode and the wider Ijebuland regard with pride. He is widely seen as a man grounded in knowledge, experienced in leadership, and deeply aware of the cultural expectations tied to the Awujale institution.

It is important to acknowledge the foresight of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in appointing Chief Sunny Kuku to this pivotal position. That decision continues to resonate, especially at a time when guidance, wisdom and firmness are required to navigate the process of selecting a new Awujale.

Chief Sunny Kuku stands out as a man of substance, one whose integrity is not easily swayed by wealth, position or public pressure. This is crucial in a time where traditional institutions in some quarters have faced the temptation of commercialization. His reputation offers reassurance that the process in Ijebuland can remain credible and transparent.

There is a widely held belief that before his passing, the late Awujale would have emphasized the importance of following established tradition. Central to this is the understanding that the next Awujale should emerge from the Fusegunwa ruling house, in accordance with the rotational arrangement already accepted by stakeholders in Ijebuland and recognized by the government.

Equally important is the insistence that the throne must not become an avenue for the highest bidder. The dignity of the Awujale stool demands that it must never be reduced to a transactional position. It is a sacred trust, not a commodity.

History provides a compelling example that should guide present decisions. When Oba Adetona himself was to be installed, he was neither wealthy nor widely known. Yet, men of principle and foresight ensured that tradition prevailed over material considerations.

Among those who played a crucial role were the late Ogeni Oja, Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola, Chief Sonibare, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo. These individuals went as far as England to bring the young Adetona back to Nigeria, ensuring that due process was followed and that tradition was upheld.

Their actions remain a defining moment in the history of Ijebuland. They could have compromised, they could have prioritized wealth or influence, but they chose the path of honour. That decision gave Ijebuland a monarch whose reign spanned decades and left an indelible mark on the land.

Today, Chief Sunny Kuku stands at a similar crossroads. The opportunity before him is not just administrative, it is historical. By ensuring that due process is followed without compromise, he has the chance to etch his name permanently in the annals of Ijebu-Ode as a custodian of integrity.

It is necessary at this point to draw a clear distinction between religion and tradition. While both play important roles in society, they operate in different spheres. Tradition and culture define the identity and continuity of a people, while religion is a matter of personal faith.

This distinction was clearly demonstrated in the past. The key figures who facilitated the emergence of Oba Adetona were devout Christians, yet they upheld traditional processes that eventually produced a Muslim king. Their actions reflected a deep understanding that cultural heritage must be preserved irrespective of personal religious leanings.

This same principle is evident in other traditional institutions such as those in Benin and Ile-Ife, where adherence to culture and tradition remains paramount. These examples reinforce the need for Ijebu-Ode to remain steadfast in its own practices.

A critical aspect of the current situation is the role of the Fusegunwa ruling house. As the next in line, the responsibility lies heavily on them to conduct a credible and transparent selection process. Unfortunately, concerns have emerged regarding the initial screening process, particularly the presentation of an unusually large number of candidates.

The emergence of about 95 names raises legitimate questions about the thoroughness and fairness of the screening exercise. It suggests that the process may not have been handled with the level of diligence expected, possibly due to personal interests or lack of proper coordination.

Given the importance of the situation, there is a strong case for a reset. The process should return to the Fusegunwa family, but this time under careful supervision to ensure that all guidelines are strictly followed. This is where the leadership of Chief Sunny Kuku becomes indispensable.

He is in a position to guide the process, ensuring that it is free, fair and consistent with tradition. His involvement can help restore confidence and prevent further controversies that may undermine the integrity of the selection.

Another crucial element that must not be overlooked is consultation with the oracle, in line with established customs. Traditional institutions derive their legitimacy not just from human decisions but from spiritual validation that aligns with cultural beliefs.

Allowing traditionalists to carry out their roles without interference is essential. Their input is not merely symbolic, it is foundational to the authenticity of the process. Any attempt to sideline this aspect risks weakening the cultural fabric that sustains the institution.

There is also a need to avoid unnecessary haste. The selection of an Awujale is not an ordinary appointment. It requires patience, thoroughness and a commitment to getting it right. Rushing the process could lead to errors that may have long-term consequences.

One of the most significant risks to avoid is litigation. Across various communities, disputes over traditional stools have often ended up in courts, creating divisions and prolonging uncertainty. Ijebu-Ode must guard against such outcomes by ensuring that every step of the process is transparent and widely accepted.

Ultimately, the strength of the Awujale stool lies in its history, its traditions and the collective will of the people to preserve it. This is not just about selecting a king, it is about safeguarding a legacy that has endured for generations.

Chief Sunny Kuku now has a rare opportunity to reinforce that legacy. By standing firm on principles of fairness, integrity and respect for tradition, he can help ensure that the next Awujale emerges through a process that commands respect both within Ijebu-Ode and beyond Ijebuland.

History will judge this moment. It will remember those who chose convenience over principle, and those who stood for what is right. For Ijebu-Ode, the path is clear. Tradition must prevail, integrity must lead, and the Awujale stool must remain the symbol of honour it has always been.

The Awujale Stool and the Imperative of Due Process

By Alhaji Korede Quadri, FCIB (Third in the Series)

The process leading to the emergence of the Awujale of Ijebu Ode, the Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, remains a matter of profound cultural and institutional importance. It is a process governed by long established customs and traditions that have, over time, preserved the dignity, unity, and hierarchy of Ijebuland. Any deviation from these guiding principles weakens the moral authority of the throne and undermines public confidence in the institution.

Ijebu Ode has four recognised ruling houses, and by the accepted order of rotation, the Fusegunwa Ruling House is next in line to produce the Awujale following the demise of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. This position is rooted in history and tradition and should not be subjected to unnecessary controversy or manipulation.

The Awujale occupies a unique and pre eminent position among traditional rulers in Ijebuland. He is the foremost monarch, with over fifty Obas across various towns and categories traditionally acknowledging his seniority. This status places a responsibility on all stakeholders to ensure that the process produces a monarch whose legitimacy is unquestioned and whose emergence reflects the collective will of tradition.

For this reason, the selection process must be transparent, credible, and faithful to custom. The next Awujale must be a person of integrity and sincerity. Financial strength or political influence has never been a defining requirement for the stool and must not be introduced as one now.

History provides a compelling example. The late Awujale emerged in 1960 while he was still in school, despite the presence of older and seemingly more established candidates from the Anikilaya Ruling House. Guided by the 1957 declaration law of the old Western Region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the process was conducted with fairness and openness. That sincerity produced a monarch whose reign earned widespread respect.

Prominent leaders of that era, including Chief Sonibare of the Action Group from Ijebu Ode and the Ogbeni Oja, Chief Timothy Odutola, had the influence to alter the outcome but chose to respect tradition. Their conduct remains a standard against which the present process should be measured.

Against this historical background, the presentation of ninety five names by the Fusegunwa Ruling House to the Afobajes does not portray the ruling house committee in a positive light. It suggests a lack of thorough internal screening and raises questions about the seriousness of the exercise. A more disciplined approach would have been to streamline the list internally, a step that appears not to have been taken, possibly due to rumoured vested interests.

Had such internal due diligence been carried out, the Afobajes would have been better positioned to further narrow the list before presenting suitable candidates to the traditionalists. This would have enhanced clarity, reduced suspicion, and promoted a more rancour free and orderly selection process in line with established customs.

At the same time, it is important that the Afobajes themselves are not hastily branded as biased, corrupt, or compromised. As custodians of a critical stage of the process, they deserve the opportunity to carry out their responsibilities without undue pressure or prejudgment, provided they act within the bounds of tradition and fairness.

In the same spirit, confidence must also be expressed in the leadership currently overseeing the transitional phase. The regent and the Ogbeni Oja, High Chief Sanny Kuku, occupy positions of great responsibility. His long standing reputation for integrity and principled conduct offers reassurance that the process will not be reduced to a transactional exercise.

The recent allegations and counter allegations of corruption have nonetheless damaged public trust and compelled the Ogun State Government to involve the DSS and the Police to investigate the process from the outset. While such intervention may be necessary, it reflects a collective failure to manage the process in a manner that inspires confidence.

In view of these developments, a fresh process, as reportedly directed by the state government, appears justified. This is an opportunity to reset the exercise, eliminate doubts, and reaffirm the centrality of culture and tradition in the selection of the Awujale.

The Awujale stool must never be for sale. It is a sacred trust, not a reward for wealth or influence. Any attempt to commercialise it is a betrayal of Ijebu values and a disservice to future generations.

Attempts by some individuals to drag the name of President Bola Tinubu into the matter are unnecessary. President Bola Tinubu is known to respect due process and the rule of law. Whoever emerges through a transparent, lawful, and culturally grounded process will naturally earn the respect of the President and the Nigerian state.

Ultimately, all stakeholders must return to the path of restraint, fairness, and respect for tradition. The credibility of the Awujale stool and the unity of Ijebuland depend on the choices made at this critical moment.

OGUN POLICE UNVEILS “GATEWAY SHIELD” DIGITAL POLICE STATION

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, disclosed the launch of the Digital Police Station platform, known as Gateway Shield, while hosting the newly inaugurated executives of Ogun FIBAN at the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The innovative initiative is designed to enhance public access to policing services, enabling residents of Ogun State to report complaints seamlessly, anonymously, and from any location.

In his welcome address, CP Ogunlowo emphasized the indispensable role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust in security institutions. He charged broadcasters to uphold truth, professionalism, and responsible journalism in their reportage, stressing that the Police Command welcomes constructive criticism.

“The Police are not averse to constructive scrutiny,” the Commissioner noted. “Responsible reportage strengthens the institution and encourages officers to deliver effectively on their constitutional responsibilities. However, we urge media practitioners to verify facts from appropriate authorities before publication, particularly on sensitive security matters.”

He pledged sustained cooperation and an open-door policy with Ogun FIBAN, assuring the association of the Command’s readiness to work closely with broadcasters in the collective interest of peace and security in the state.

Acting on the Commissioner’s directive, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, provided further insight into the operations of Gateway Shield. He explained that the platform, conceptualized by the Commissioner himself, allows residents to download the application via Google Play Store or Apple App Store and follow simple steps to lodge complaints discreetly.

According to him, members of the public can also access the platform through www.thegatewayshield.com or call the toll-free line 0800 000 9111, where complaints will receive prompt attention from the Command.

The initiative, he noted, is part of the Command’s broader strategy to leverage technology in modern policing and bridge the communication gap between the Police and the public.

Earlier in his remarks, Hon. Shoyinka commended CP Ogunlowo for his professionalism, innovation, and consistent engagement with media stakeholders. He revealed that his administration intends to revive the proposed quarterly “Ogun CP Time Out with Broadcasters,” last held in June 2025, as a structured platform to deepen dialogue among the Police Command, media practitioners, and the public.

He applauded the Command’s efforts in curbing security threats across Ogun State and prayed for continued wisdom and strength for the Commissioner and his management team.

Members of the Commissioner’s management team present at the meeting included DCP Sarah I. Ehindero (DC Admin), DCP Bolanle Murtala (DCP Operations), DCP Gbenga Adeoye (DC CID), AC A. Akinmoladun, and the PPRO.

NSCDC COMMANDANT REAFFIRMS MEDIA–SECURITY PARTNERSHIP

In a related development, the Ogun State Command of the NSCDC also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with Ogun FIBAN during a familiarisation and courtesy visit by the association’s leadership to the Command Headquarters in Abeokuta.

The State Commandant described the visit as timely and significant, noting that the media remains a strategic stakeholder in effective security management and national development.

She highlighted the statutory mandate of the Corps as provided in the Consolidated NSCDC Act of 2003 & 2007, which includes the protection of lives and property, safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, supervision and monitoring of private guard companies, maintenance of peace and public order, support to civil authorities during emergencies, promotion of the Safe School Initiative, protection of farmers and herders through the Agro Rangers Corps, and other community-focused interventions.

According to the Commandant, security cannot be achieved by security agencies alone but requires cooperation, timely communication, and mutual trust among security institutions, the media, and the public.

While assuring the association of the Command’s openness to stronger collaboration in public sensitisation campaigns, community engagement programmes, disaster preparedness, and emergency response education, she stressed the importance of professionalism and responsible reporting on security-related issues.

She cautioned that the dissemination of unverified or sensational information could create panic, mislead the public, or compromise ongoing security operations, urging adherence to accuracy, balance, fairness, and national interest in reportage.

Responding, Hon. Shoyinka described Ogun FIBAN as a professional body comprising credible content creators across radio, television, and digital platforms, whose work plays a crucial role in informing, educating, and shaping public perception.

He reiterated the association’s commitment to responsible journalism and called for timely access to accurate information from security agencies to enhance balanced and factual reportage in the overall interest of society.

Members of the NSCDC Management Team present included Deputy Commandant Popoola Rafiu Adebayo (Second-in-Command); Deputy Commandant Ajibare Emmanuel Jose (HOD Administration); Ajao Rasheed Omowonuola (HOD Finance); Deputy Commandant Ajala Kolawole (HOD Operations); Deputy Commandant Adebiyi Ishola; and Deputy Commandant Adesanya Kayode Motunrayo (HOD PGC).

The Ogun FIBAN delegation comprised Comrade Moses Okunlola (General Secretary); Comrade Oluwatoyin Omobolanle Asakpa (Jaske) – Treasurer; Comrade Olusoji Akindiya (Okanlomo) – Publicity Secretary; Comrade Remilekun Elegbede – Financial Secretary; Comrade Betty Adejare – Welfare Officer; Alhaji Kola Popoola; Chief (Mrs.) Kikelomo Ogunsina; Comrade Wasiu Alani (Jejelomo); Comrade Tolulope Obadare (Aboki Ijesa); Comrade Seun Adesanya; and Comrade Babatunde Somoye.

These engagements collectively underscore a renewed commitment by security agencies and media stakeholders in Ogun State to build stronger institutional partnerships anchored on transparency, professionalism, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in the pursuit of peace, security, and sustainable development.
