THE BOY FROM GUNDVWINI WHO CONQUERED AMERICA

From deep in the rural backwaters of Gundvwini, Sakhile Dlamini is now an engineer at Google in the USA. Like many rural boys, he grew up fetching firewood for his mom to cook and water from the local river. There was no electricity at home. Most significantly, though, is that he was initially not a high achiever at school. He repeated Grade 7. However, self-belief propelled him to one of the biggest tech companies in the world.
Interviewed by The Nation at the 2nd eSwatini Economic Conference in Royal Swazi Sun Convention Centre at Ezulwini last month where he was a guest speaker, Dlamini said that getting a job at Google was no child’s play and he did not think he would be accepted.
He had to undergo three stages of interviews between August 2012 and January 2013. He has worked for the company for six years. His responsibility includes designing, implementing, and deploying customer software.
“Working at Google has been a bit tough because of my imposter syndrome. It has taken a lot of courage and self-motivation to get over it. It’s a daily struggle to start feeling good enough.”
