Day 3 of protest, and we hope to see good results from the ongoing negotiations with the University management.
23/07/2023
Unilag Students protest against the outrageous hike in the school fees. We understand the economy is hard but a 500% increment is harsh on students!
What happened to affordable education?🤔
What happens to a family that has 3 kids in the University? Should they drop out and abandon their dreams?🥲
A common student is struggling to tackle his feeding & accommodation fees, thus a 500% school fees increment seeks to kill all hopes of being a student!😞
You know who I pity the most? The recent 100L students.
They entered school only to spend 3 years in their 1st year.
Now, in their 2nd year they are being forced to pay a ridiculous amount of school fees. 🤦♂
Is this to destroy student's interests in education? 🧐
The fear of indemnity form is what the management has weaponized. They believe we can't protest, but this?? We've been pushed against the wall!🙅♀
Raising the school fees with no increase in quality education is bewildering and unacceptable‼️😑

UNILAG OPENS PORTAL FOR PAYMENT OF SCHOOL FEES (RETURNING STUDENT), ADJUSTS RESUMPTION DATE TO OCTOBER 3RD, 2023.
P.S.: Read below, a detailed minute report from the meeting held yesterday with the University of Lagos management team.
SALIENT TAKE HOME FROM THE MEETING WITH THE MANAGEMENT TEAM.
Today being Thursday the 20th of July 2023 , the interface between the University of Lagos Management team and the Non- teaching Unions commenced at about 04: 10pm.
NAAT Chairman kicked off the meeting with the opening prayers.
The Vice Chancellor Prof Ogunsola Afolashade OON read out the agenda for the meeting. They are as follows,
1. Introduction of the policy of reduction in staff expenditure: The concept of working from home as organised by each HOD.
The Vice Chancellor intimated the Unions that due to the harsh realization in the country, it is imperative that management deploy strategies that will relieve members of staff from spending more on transportation to work daily. Hence, all the H.O.D have been instructed to map out schemes in the units / department that will ensure some staff works from home. This scenario is not peculiar to the University of Lagos alone. This will cushion the effect of subsidy removal which is milking staff monthly midget income. Staff who want to embark on annual leave should use this window of opportunity to proceed on their annual leave.
2. The non availability of funds to finance projects : Deficit of 1.2 billions yearly since 2020.
The University financial purse is literally on autopilot . The last (3) three years has been awkwardly difficult in terms of finance for the institution. The Vice Chancellor informed all present that the normal annual income from the auxiliary fund is 5.6 billion naira. Expenditure gulped 6.8 billion naira, leaving a perturbing deficit of 1.2 million annually. Meaning they have spent more than the budget and are now owing 1.2 billion naira on a yearly basis. She further informed the Unions that this was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that students have not paid school fees since the pandemic outbreak.
Madam Vice Chancellor acknowledges that members of staff need palliatives to quell the present state of hunger and unfavorable economic policies in the land. Therefore, the Management is working around the clock to ensure that profit sharing will be paid in 2 to 3 weeks time. Indeed the Management already has a figure/template but it won't be revealed now. However, the Management will call the Unions when all the generating sources of income that make up the IGR have submitted their accounts.
3. Introduction of sustainable school fees in conformity to the present realization in the polity.
The Vice Chancellor stated that "it is no longer news that the University of Lagos tuition has not changed in the last 20 years, but the cost of managing education has skyrocketed astronomically".
Therefore, the University took a proactive step by engaging parents, students and members of staff that are parents in the University through the Dean of Student Affairs in January 2023.
In view of this development the University of Lagos Management launched an upward review of students school fees . The 2023/2024 academic calendar kicks off October 3rd, 2023.
The Ministry of Education, the Nigeria University Commission and the University of Lagos Parent forum were availed a copy of the moderated fees.

- All the Union leadership did not support the increase in school fees. The VC highlights that members of staff are awarded the liberty to pay in instalment.
The SSANU caretaker Chairman Unilag Branch pleaded for a reduction of the fee.
SSANU Idiaraba branch Chairman appeals to the Management to direct the Bursar to demand for staff preferred accounts where the profit sharing will be paid.
NASU Chairman Unilag Branch appreciates the Vice Chancellor especially the role she played during the attempted detainment of NASU members by the DPO of Sabo Police Station . The Chairman Comrade Abiodun Olayinka further pleaded for a rebate for Staff children as it is practiced in DLI.
The Chairman equally asked the Management the modality for the paying of the New School fees.. The VC replied to everyone present that staff interest was protected that is why the fee is pegged at the amount they are reeling out against the initial #300,00.00 for returning students and #500,00.00 for freshwaters . Furthermore staff must ensure they pay the school fees one month before the commencement of the session exam.
NASU Chairman appealed to the VC the need for partner with BRT buses that will ply Abule-Egba, Iyana Ipaja, Ikeja Toll gate axis to Unilag. The VC assured all that the management will look into it. She delegated Prof Chukwu the DVC to take charge of the idea.
SSANU Unilag caretaker Chairman concurred with the rebate initiative for members of staff launched by NASU Unilag Chairman. He tried to reiterate it's importance via unionism toga, but the VC stood her ground that staff 3 to 6% population are already considered in the new school fee.
NASU Chairman Idiaraba branch, appreciate the VC leadership style and for calling the meeting to set the record straight against the backdrop of unfounded rumors flowing freely in the school. He tilted towards the notion of rebates for staff children. He further intimated the Management team that some H.O.D may not understand the work from home ideology and may victimize members. Therefore, there is a need for management to release a memo to that effect.
NAAT are of the opinion that the increase of school fees is inevitable, but they want the management to judiciously use these new fees.
There was a call for the Management to sponsor brilliant indigent students through the alumni and grants.
VC RESPONSE.
The University has Provision but lack of funds in the last 3 years derail actualizing the noble idea.
The school fee in question has been moderated over 5 times. If not the figure would have been #500,000.00 for each new student.
Some of the money will be sent to the department and used judiciously to acquire needed instruments to ensure qualitative graduates. Any department that didn't live up to expectation will be held accountable.
Contemporary event is tilting toward the ideology of distance learning will now be our new education norm.
The increase in school fees will equally pave way for better palliatives. Palliatives are generated from IGR and if the University account is in comatose then there is no magic to attain palliatives.
At the moment there is no money for facilitating rent upfront payment . Besides Ippis is not friendly with the upfront ideology.
The University Management is reviewing all university properties both on and off Unilag.
Staff Medical Screening cannot be attainable now , since the University IGR has dwindled drastically.
Intentional School lSL was placed on university payroll but IPPIS removed them since the government does not recognize them as part of University of Lagos Staff.
TETFUND has rolled out new forms , interested non teaching staff should see the DVC Professor Oboh .
Training that will enhance staff efficiency will be introduced soon.
The Ippis have assured us that payment of promotion arrears will only be attainable when there is a Minister for Education.
On the issue of Lagos Factor, the Federal Government has thrown it to the University Governing Council to take care of it at their level. There may be deregulation of salary by the new government.
There is nothing like a 13 month salary payment for any government worker.
Union should not condone criminal behavior by their members. Union leadership should sensitize their members and encourage them to be law abiding.
Staff children will benefit a certain percentage regarding accommodations procurement. The Dean of Student Affairs will be intimated on the subject matter.
What you tagged usurpation of office originally meant for the none teaching staff, is not the making of the University management but the Federal Government through their White papers.
The Management has finalized the position for Deputy Bursar , Deputy Registrar etc . It's already before the University Council for ratification. Note that once this is done, non teaching staff who are qualified will be promoted to level 15. Promotion to level 15 will not be by appointment any longer.
All the University of Lagos staff promotion is scheduled for every 3 years in respective of your affiliated union, as directed by the University of Lagos condition of service and not the Public Service Rules as stated by NASU Unilag Chairman. The review of the condition of service is ongoing.
On the issue of Hazzard Allowance, the Federal Government is still bent on paying only those captured in the 2009 agreement. Since the Unions are claiming University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and 4 other universities are paying the allowance. The management will investigate how they went about it, but staff should know that if only 6 universities are paying out of 54 then something is fishy . When the problem commences , the Vice Chancellor will be held responsible .
The meeting came to an end by 07: 04pm with a vote of thanks by the Vice Chancellor.
SSANU Chairman said the closing prayer at about 07:08.
Thank you.

Is the government's plan to eradicate education?
Sad. Really sad. Unilag needs a student union. No single body of association to voice out the concerns of the students? This is beyond a 600% increment in fees.
What are students looking at?
What will the daughter of a fish seller tell her parents?
What will be the fate of the son of a carpenter, who has raised hopes of having a graduate in his family?
Even the middle class can't cope with this problem. How many drop-outs are we going to have?
Why is it only staff children that can pay installments, if we are to agree to this?
So many questions! This is not a solution. Instead of taking the problem to those in government, they are taking it upon the masses to solve the government's problems. Why?
A lot of things need to be said! This is outrageous.

SPECIAL: UNILAG INTRODUCES THREE NEW COURSES FOR 2022/2023 ADMISSION
30/12/2022
HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR AGGREGATE SCORE - By
1. Divide your UTME Score by 8. (This makes up the 50%; if you had 293, you should have 36.625; if you had 228, you should have 28.5)
2. From your WASSCE result, pick the relevant 5 core subjects to your preferred course of study (the ones used during registration, or check the admission requirements - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k8ijzGg8EmD3V4D8HWK6IG6VwTbKu8b-/)
3. Multiply each grade by the corresponding points. The point-grade system is as thus:
> A1 = 10
> B2 = 9
> B3 = 8
> C4 = 7
> C5 = 6
> C6 = 5
> D7 = 4
> E8 = 3
> F9 = 2
4. Add the points together (e.g if you have 5 A1's, you should have 50/50; if you have 1 A1, 2 B2's, and 2 B3's you should have 44/50)
5. Add the value you got from the first calculation, i.e., from "1" to the you one got in "4". This sum is your aggregate (e.g 36.625 + 50 = 86.625, 28.5 + 44 = 72.5)
6. Compare the value you have with the just released cut off marks (view file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k4UTdMbkoCwHsfINzPrw2kkxRieFVprv/), and see your luck.
Did you pass or have exactly the merit/catchment marks? Congratulations!
Did you miss by a slight percentage, like say ±1, then you could still hit Merit list or Supplementary list.
Please share this with your friends.
