Some clients in live sound and recording can be incredibly difficult—sometimes it feels like no amount of skill or preparation is enough. They might keep changing what they want mid-session, have vague or unrealistic expectations, or constantly question your choices.
I remember a live recording session where the artist kept asking for changes while we were on a tight schedule. One minute the vocals were too loud, the next they wanted more reverb, and then they said the mix “didn’t feel right” without explaining why. It was stressful because I had to manage the technical side—balancing instruments, ensuring clarity, and keeping the session on time—while also keeping the client satisfied.
Instead of getting frustrated, I started breaking down each element and giving them options: “Do you want the vocals brighter here or softer there?” or “Here’s a version with more reverb and one with less—point me to what you like.” That small change in approach made a huge difference: the client felt heard, the session ran smoother, and the final recording was better than expected.
Lesson: Handling difficult clients taught me that being a sound engineer isn’t just about faders and microphones—it’s about communication, patience, and professionalism.
I learned to:
*Clarify expectations upfront: Know what the client wants before the session starts.
*Stay calm under pressure: Live sound doesn’t wait for frustration to pass.
Provide options, not excuses: Giving choices empowers the client without compromising your expertise.
*Document decisions: Recording what’s agreed helps avoid endless back-and-forth.
*Separate emotion from work: Feedback is about the sound, not about you personally.
In the end, these challenging sessions became my greatest teachers. They sharpened my technical skills, improved my people skills, and reminded me that a great recording isn’t just about sound—it’s about collaboration.

How to stay consistent and focused:
*Break tasks into smaller steps: Large projects can feel overwhelming. Tackling them piece by piece keeps you productive.
*Set clear boundaries: Define your scope, timelines, and communication rules with clients upfront.
*Prioritize effectively: Focus first on tasks that have the highest impact for the client.
*Celebrate small wins: Completing milestones keeps you motivated and builds momentum.
Difficult clients test your patience, but they also sharpen your skills and resilience. Remember, the work you consistently deliver is more important than how easy or difficult the client is. Stay focused, stay professional, and watch your reputation grow.
Consistency + Focus = Client Loyalty. It’s that simple.

Consistency Wins: How to Stay Focused Even with Difficult Clients
Working with clients can be rewarding, but let’s be honest—some clients are tough. They push deadlines, request endless revisions, or sometimes seem impossible to please. It’s easy to feel frustrated or overwhelmed, but here’s the truth: your consistency and focus are your biggest advantages.
Consistency isn’t just about showing up; it’s about showing up with quality, professionalism, and reliability—every single time. When you remain consistent, even with challenging clients, you build trust. Clients notice the effort, discipline, and dedication you bring to the table. Over time, that trust turns into repeat business, referrals, and a strong professional reputation.
