The story I shared about the 12-year-old boy has stayed with me.

It made me ask an important question:
What happens when a child is promoted from one class to another without developing the ability to read confidently?

The answer is simple: the gap becomes wider.

A child who struggles with basic sounds and decoding today may struggle with comprehension, spelling, writing, Mathematics, Science and other subjects tomorrow.

But here is the good news:
It is not too late to help.

Children can improve when we identify the actual gap and teach them from the level they are, rather than simply teaching according to their age or class.

This is where I come in.

When a Child Can’t Read, We Must Look Beyond the Child. 💔

I met a 12-year-old boy whose story broke my heart.

When I asked him what class he was in, he quietly replied, “Primary 1.”

I was surprised and asked again.

He had actually completed Primary 6, passed his Common Entrance examination, and had even progressed to JSS 1 at his previous school.

So why was he back in Primary 1?

He could not sound out basic three-letter words. He struggled to spell and could not read independently.

Somehow, the system had moved him from one class to another without ensuring that he had mastered the foundational skills needed for learning.

And this reminded me of something we don't talk about enough:

Phonics and decoding are not only the responsibility of early-years teachers or English teachers.

Every teacher, regardless of the class or subject they teach, needs some understanding of foundational literacy.

A child who cannot decode words will struggle to:

📖 Understand a textbook
🧮 Solve a mathematics word problem
✍️ Express ideas in writing
🌍 Learn independently

We often tell children to read to learn” without first asking whether they have actually learned to read.

When foundational literacy is missing, more worksheets, more homework, and more exams may not solve the problem.

Sometimes, what a child needs is better teaching, targeted support, patience, and someone willing to go back to the foundation.

No child should be carried through the education system without us noticing that they cannot read.

Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader.

𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙯𝙮. 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣'𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.

One thing I've learned as a teacher is that every child learns differently.

When a child finds learning difficult, it's easy to assume they're not trying hard enough. But many times, that's not the case.

They may simply need a little 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝, 𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙚𝙙.

I've had the privilege of watching children who once said, "𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙣'𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨," grow into children who confidently say, "𝙇𝙚𝙩 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣."

That kind of growth doesn't happen because of pressure or constant correction.

It happens when children feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and keep trying.

𝘼𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙡𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙣, 𝙡𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.

𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨, 𝙡𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙣𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡.

A few extra minutes of support, a kind word, or one teacher who refuses to give up can make a lifelong difference in a child's confidence and love for learning.

𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙟𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙'𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮. 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮, 𝙤𝙧 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙚, 𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚: 𝘼 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙩

A few months ago, I met a lovely young girl. She was eager to learn and always came to class with a smile.

But there was one challenge, her handwriting was difficult to read, and she struggled to express her thoughts clearly on paper.

𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡.

She didn't need criticism; she needed 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙚𝙧.

𝙎𝙤, 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮.

We practised her writing little by little, celebrated every improvement, and never gave up, even when progress seemed slow.

Today, when I look at her work, I can hardly believe the transformation. Her handwriting is 𝙣𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙖𝙨𝙢.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙚𝙙.

𝙈𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜.

A child's success is always stronger when 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧.

This experience has reminded me of an important truth:

𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙪𝙢. 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙪𝙥 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.
