I'm 34, covered in tattoos, ride a Harley, and spend my weekends at the gym. Nobody has ever once described me as soft.
My sister called me in a panic last spring. She had rescued a Chihuahua from a hoarding situation and couldn't keep him. Six pounds. No name. Teeth chattering before she even handed him over. I told her two weeks max. I had a reputation to maintain.

I named him Diesel. Seemed appropriate.
Diesel had other plans for that name. Day one he refused to walk on the hardwood floor. Just stood at the edge trembling like I'd asked him to cross an ocean. I carried him. Just that once I told myself.
Day four I caught him wedged behind the washing machine because the spin cycle scared him. I sat on the laundry room floor for forty minutes until he stopped shaking. Just that once.
Week two my buddy dropped off his kids and one of them had a tiny yellow raincoat for her doll. Diesel walked over, sniffed it, and looked at me with those enormous eyes. I put it on him. He strutted around that living room like he owned it.
Now he has seven outfits. I counted. I'm not proud.
The two weeks came and went. My sister never asked. I never called.🥺
Last night I had three guys from the job site over watching the game. Two hundred and sixty pounds of man sitting on my couch, completely still, because Diesel was asleep on my chest and I didn't want to wake him.
Nobody said a word about it.
Smart guys.
