THE HISTORY OF THE SEVEN SISTERS

You must have heard about oil, the black gold that makes countries rich and is used to make different by products that are useful to man.

But what you might not have know is that crude oil was formed as a result of small plants and animals that died and fell to the bottom of the sea floor, buried under layers of rock.

In 1858, Edwin Drake discovered oil and in 1870 Rockefeller formed the Standard Oil of ohio, His company had a habit of buying their strongest competitor, he always researched and developed new products that would be produced from oil like Vaseline, varnish, toothpaste and paraffin wax.

He also diversified into Iron, rail roads, shipping etc until his company was broken into 33 other companies after a court case, some of the companies that were birth from his company included Mobil, Exxon, Chevron etc

The mid 1940s, seven oil companies grew to control about 75% of the oil reserves and 85% in the 1950s, then Enrico Mattei popularised them by referring them to what we would later know as the 'Seven sisters' it was a term used for the seven daughters of Pleione and Titan Atlas (Pleiades sisters)

The seven sisters included

✓Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (now known as Exxon)

✓ Standard Oil Company of New York (Mobil)

✓ Standard Oil Company of California (Chevron)

✓ Gulf oil

✓ Texaco

✓ British Petroleum (BP)

✓ Royal Dutch (Shell)

Most of them have merged, like Exxon Mobil, Texaco merged with Chevron as well.

The seven sisters used ownership of oil fields to maintain collusion and restrict oil supply so that they could reap greater profits, they sometimes minimised the taxes and regulations they were meant to pay to the government of the countries that owned the oil fields and when the government wanted to nationalise their oil, they could slow production of oil to retaliate.

In 1951, Mohammed Mossadegh nationalised the nation's oil asset, this angered BP, and in 1953 he was overthrown out of government and the new government gave back the oil fields back to the seven sisters until OPEC was born in 1960.

OPEC, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting countries is a cartel that aims to manage the supply of oil in an effort to coordinate the price of oil in the world unfortunately Russia, UK and United States aren't members

They coordinate their members oil production to keep price stable, their influence grew when they announced oil embargo in 1973 aimed at countries that supported Isreal during the Yom Kippur war, members include

1. Iran
2. Iraq
3. Kuwait
4. Saudi Arabia
5. Venezuela
6. Baghdad
7. Nigeria
8. Libya
9. United Arab Emirates
10. Algeria
11. Angola
12. Congo
13. Equatorial Guinea

And four countries left which include Ecuador, Indonesia, Gabon, Qatar

Do you think that OPEC succeeded in phasing out the oil monopoly

DIGITAL MARKETING IN THE MARITIME SECTOR

Before we discuss about digital marketing, it's best to understand what marketing is all about

Marketing refers to any activity that aims to promote a brand and increase the sales of either the products or services of a Firm or individual.

It could be packaging, advertising, product quality, discounts, coupons etc

But when it comes to digital marketing, a company focuses on those activities that can increase their sales and brand equity on the digital space (online)

These activities ranges from search engine optimization, email marketing, content Marketing, Copywriting, brand Storytelling etc

Digital marketing works like in any other related industry, I'm not downgrading the place of offline marketing and regular sales, but to reach more targets, prospects and boost one's business, you need digital marketing and it is crucial in a time like this because a large untapped audience can be found on the digital space, but those in the Maritime sector know this already because we help in the globalization of the world

Becoming a digital marketer in these times, one need to know about sales, Copywriting, search engine optimization, branding, content marketing, graphic designing, etc

But one doesn't need to know all these, one has to know content Marketing which is to me like the foundation, you can collaborate with other experts in other niches to get excellent results.

But becoming a Maritime digital marketer, one has to be knowledgeable about maritime subject matters and topics

Every company that needs promotion and online visibility can leverage on digital marketing, as long as that Maritime firm has anything of value to give to the public, as long as you have an opinion worth hearing, as long as that company sells.

Companies such as shipping agencies, broke firms, shipping dockyards, boatyards, cruise liners and vacation companies, ship construction companies etc

The role of the maritime digital marketer basically is to promote the services, product, sales, online visibility and brand equity of the maritime Firm he or she is representing.

But first he has to understand the target audience, the customer segmentation that needs the value delivered by that firm.

Let's say the Firm is a Shipping Agency, then their target are importers and exporters, if that firm is a shipping company, then their target are ship owners, charterers, crew members and if it's a Logistics company, they need customers, agents and dispatch riders.

It is the work of the digital marketer to create a customer persona to find out their demographics (age, s*x, location, social status ) and Psychographics (Mentality, emotions, feelings, pain point)

Then he should get the company's brand story, values, beliefs, strengths, unique selling proposition and create stories that sell or contents that either engages, educates and entertains that customer persona.

This also would help him or her to find the best digital marketing tools to use, email marketing, Sales letter, Content marketing etc

Benefits of the maritime digital marketing are

Firstly, it increases the visibility of the brand of the company, many people do not know that many maritime and logistics firms exist, because they haven't leverage fully on the power of digital marketing

Secondly, it is a medium to educate and engage the audience, a lot of importers do not know how best to ship their products, the documentation, and how to go about getting them. They end up paying more than required.

Thirdly, it increases the sales when most people know about your company and your products, they patronise

Fourthly, It helps in recruiting the right personnels, people can apply from wherever they are. This in turn saves cost of billboards, adverts, promotions and handbills

Lastly, your business can survive without a physical office or edifice. Your business transactions can be done virtually as well as business meetings. Yet you'll still deliver effectively and efficiently, this also counts during pandemics and lockdown
