BEHIND HER BACK đš 04
An hour later, Linda finally arrived at the office. She walked in, looking slightly flustered.
Amara called her in immediately.
âYouâre late,â Amara said coolly. âEverything okay?â
Linda shifted on her feet. âYes, ma. Just some personal matters.â
Amara studied her carefully. âIs this about why youâre taking Friday off?â
Linda hesitated. âYes, ma.â
Something in her tone made Amara feel uneasy.
She was about to ask more questions when Cynthia knocked and entered. âMa, the investors are on the line.â
Amara sighed. âWeâll talk later, Linda.â
Linda nodded quickly and left.
**************************
That night, Amara got home earlier than usual.
Zara was doing her homework at the dining table, and David was in the living room, watching TV.
âHey, love,â David said, standing up to hug her. âYouâre early.â
âMeetings ended early,â she said, kissing his cheek. âHow was your day?â
David stretched. âBusy. But good.â
Amara glanced at his phone on the couch. The screen lit up for a second before going dark.
She wanted to ignore it. She really did.
But something inside her wouldnât let it go.
âDavid,â she said slowly. âWhere were you this afternoon?â
David blinked, caught off guard. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean⌠were you at a restaurant?â
David frowned, then let out a small laugh. âOh. Yeah, I met up with a colleague.â
Amara forced a smile. âWho?â
David hesitated, just for a second.
But she noticed.
âUh⌠Tunde, from work,â he said quickly.
Amara nodded. âOkay.â
David kissed her forehead. âWhy? You checking up on me?â
She laughed lightly. âOf course not.â
He grinned. âGood. Because you know youâre the only woman in my life.â
Amara smiled. âI know.â
" Are you okay? David asked with concern.
" Yeah.. I'm fine"
" You sure?
" Yeah, I will just go freshen up and join you guys"
David nodded his head and Amara made her way to the stairs.
********************************
The day had barely started when Cynthia walked into Amaraâs office, clutching an envelope in her hands. Amara barely glanced up from her laptop, expecting the usual morning briefing.
âMa,â Cynthia said quietly.
Something in her tone made Amara look up. Cynthia was standing stiffly, her fingers gripping the envelope as though she was gathering courage.
âWhat is it?â Amara asked, setting her pen down.
Cynthia inhaled deeply before extending the envelope toward her. âItâs my resignation letter.â
For a moment, Amara didnât move. The words didnât register.
Then she frowned, slowly taking the envelope and placing it on her desk without opening it.
âCynthia, what are you talking about?â she asked, her voice controlled.
Cynthia lowered her gaze. âIâm leaving the country. My husband has finalized our relocation, and Iâll be joining him abroad.â
Silence.
Amara leaned back in her chair, arms folded across her chest. âWhy am I just hearing about this now?â
âI only got confirmation recently,â Cynthia said softly. âI didnât want to say anything until everything was set.â
Amara let out a slow breath, tapping her fingers on the desk. She wasnât just Cynthiaâs bossâshe trusted her. Cynthia had been with her for years, handling the most confidential matters of both her business and personal life. Losing her felt like losing a piece of her structure.
Her first instinct was to convince her to stay.
âCynthia, I donât want you to go,â Amara admitted, her voice unusually vulnerable. âYou are the best assistant Iâve ever had. I donât think I can find someone as efficient and trustworthy as you.â
Cynthiaâs eyes softened, but she shook her head. âI know, ma. And I appreciate everything youâve done for me. But this is important for my family. I canât stay.â
Amara looked away, swallowing the lump in her throat. She had built her company from scratch, overcome difficult challenges, but this? This felt personal.
She exhaled. âHow much time do I have?â
âI can serve a two-week notice,â Cynthia replied.
Amara nodded slowly. âAlright. But know thisâyouâll be deeply missed.â
Cynthia smiled faintly. âThank you, ma. Iâll do my best to make the transition smooth before I leave.â
Amara waved her off. âGo. I need time to process this.â
Cynthia gave her one last look before quietly leaving the office.
As soon as the door closed, Amara buried her face in her hands.
Cynthia was leaving.
And for the first time in a long while, Amara felt unprepared.
**************************
By afternoon, the reality of Cynthiaâs departure had fully settled in. Amara knew she couldnât afford to dwell on her emotionsâshe needed a replacement, and she needed one fast.
She pressed the intercom. âLinda, call the HR Manager. I need to see him immediately.â
A few minutes later, Mr. Ojo, the companyâs HR Manager, walked in. He was a middle-aged man with sharp eyes and an air of efficiency.
âGood afternoon, ma,â he greeted.
Amara gestured for him to sit. âCynthia is leaving in two weeks.â
Mr. Ojo blinked. âOh. I wasnât aware.â
âShe just told me this morning,â Amara said. âI need a new personal assistant, and I need one immediately. Someone highly competent and trustworthy.â
Mr. Ojo nodded, already making notes. âIâll shortlist some candidates and send you their profiles by tomorrow.â
âI donât want just anyone,â Amara stressed. âThe person must be extremely organized, skilled in handling confidential matters, and must understand how I work. Cynthia was irreplaceable, but I need someone close to her level.â
âI understand, ma. Iâll ensure we get the best fit.â
Amara exhaled, nodding. âGood. Get on it as soon as possible.â
Mr. Ojo stood. âIâll keep you updated, ma.â
As he left, Amara stared at her desk, suddenly feeling drained.
She hated change.
And this one was coming at her too fast.
---__________________________________________
That night, Amara sat in the living room, absently scrolling through her emails while Zara worked on her homework at the dining table. David was stretched out on the couch, flipping through TV channels.
Amara turned to him. âCynthia resigned today.â
David barely reacted. âOh? Why?â
âSheâs joining her husband abroad.â
David shrugged. âMakes sense. You knew sheâd leave eventually.â
Amara frowned. âNo, I didnât. She never mentioned it before.â
David chuckled. âWell, maybe she didnât want to stress you until it was certain.â
Amara pursed her lips, feeling strangely irritated by his casual tone. Was it that easy for him to dismiss Cynthiaâs departure?
âIâll miss her,â Amara muttered.
David glanced at her. âShe was just your assistant, babe. Youâll find another one.â
âShe wasnât just my assistant,â Amara said sharply. âShe was the best at what she did.â
David held up his hands. âAlright, alright. Iâm just sayingâdonât stress over it. Youâll manage.â
Amara didnât respond. Instead, she turned her attention back to Zara.
âMummy, why do you look sad?â Zara asked, looking up from her homework.
Amara forced a smile. âIâm just tired, sweetheart.â
Zara tilted her head. âDid something happen at work?â
Amara chuckled. âYouâre too smart for your age.â
Zara grinned. âI know.â
Amara sighed. âMy personal assistant is leaving. Iâll miss her.â
âWhy is she leaving?â
âSheâs joining her husband abroad.â
Zara frowned. âSo she wonât work with you anymore?â
âNo, baby.â
Zara thought for a moment. âCan I be your new assistant?â
Amara laughed, pulling her daughter into a hug. âOh, my love. Youâre already the best assistant I have at home.â
Zara giggled, wrapping her arms around her motherâs neck.
For a moment, Amara let herself relax.
But deep down, she knew Cynthiaâs resignation wasnât just about losing an employee.
It felt like a shift.
Like something bigger was coming.

BEHIND HER BACK đš 03
The weeks rolled by, and life at Amari Group remained as fast-paced as ever. Amara was busier than usual, juggling multiple real estate projects, board meetings, and investor negotiations. Despite the long hours, she loved every bit of it. She had worked hard to build her company, and she wasnât slowing down anytime soon.
At home, things were just as steady. David remained the loving, attentive husband, and Zara continued to bring joy to their lives with her endless stories and school activities. Everything seemed normalâperfect, even.
*************************
Amara stepped out of the closet, adjusting her earrings as she glanced at the clock. She had an important board meeting that morning, and she didnât want to be late.
David was still in bed, scrolling through his phone.
She leaned down and kissed his forehead. âArenât you going to work today?â
He glanced up, flashing her a lazy smile. âIâll go in a bit."
Amara nodded and grabbed her bag. âAlright, Iâm off. See you later.â
As she left, she caught a glimpse of his phone screenâa message notification disappearing before she could read it.
" I love you" David said after her.
" I love you too"
*****************************
Amara walked into Amari Group headquarters, immediately met by Cynthia, her ever-efficient P.A.
âGood morning, ma,â Cynthia greeted, falling into step beside her.
âMorning, Cynthia. Updates?â
âThe legal team finalized the documents for the new estate deal, and the marketing team wants your approval on the ad campaign. Also, the investors are requesting a follow-up meeting next week.â
Amara nodded. âSchedule the meeting for Wednesday. And Iâll review the campaign after lunch.â
âYes, ma.â
As they reached her office, Cynthia hesitated. âAlso⌠Linda asked to see you. She said itâs urgent.â
Amara frowned slightly. âDid she say what it was about?â
âNo, ma. Just that itâs important.â
Amara sighed. âAlright, send her in.â
Cynthia nodded and left. Moments later, Linda walked in, looking a little nervous.
âGood morning, ma,â Linda said, offering a small smile.
âMorning, Linda. Whatâs urgent?â
Linda hesitated, biting her lip. âI was wondering if I could take Friday off. Just for a personal matter.â
Amara raised an eyebrow. Linda rarely asked for time off. âEverything okay?â
âYes, ma. Just something I need to take care of.â
Amara studied her for a moment before nodding. âAlright. Make sure everything is in order before you leave.â
Lindaâs face lit up with relief. âThank you, ma.â
As Linda left, Amara shook her head.
**************************
Later that afternoon, Amara met Chioma for lunch at their usual spot.
Chioma stirred her drink, watching Amara closely. âYou seem tired.â
Amara sighed, rubbing her temples. âI am. Work has been crazy.â
Chioma smirked. âAnd home?â
Amara chuckled. âHome is fine. Same old, same old.â
Chioma leaned forward. âYou still think David is the perfect husband?â
Amara rolled her eyes. âChiomaââ
âIâm just asking,â Chioma interrupted, raising her hands in defense."
âYes, I do,â Amara said firmly. âDavid has never given me a reason to doubt him.â
Chioma tilted her head. âGood. I hope it stays that way.â
Amara frowned. âWhy do I feel like you know something I donât?â
Chioma smiled, but it didnât quite reach her eyes. âI just know that nothing is ever as perfect as it seems.â
Before Amara could respond, her phone buzzed with a message.
It was from Cynthia.
Cynthia: Ma, Mr. David just called. He wants to take you out to dinner tonight.
Amara smiled, showing Chioma. âSee? Heâs still the man I married.â
Chioma glanced at the message, then back at Amara. âI hope youâre right.â
" I'm right. Stop worrying about me and my marriage. It's been 10 years and we are perfectly fine"
" If you say so"
******************************************
That evening, Amara met David at an upscale restaurant. He had already reserved a private table, and the ambiance was warm and inviting.
âYou look stunning,â David said as she sat down.
She smiled. âFlattery will get you anywhere.â
David chuckled, reaching for her hand. âI just wanted to spend some time with my beautiful wife. Youâve been so busy lately.â
Amara squeezed his hand. " I'm sorry"
The dinner was perfectâdelicious food, laughter, and light conversation. But as they talked, something nagged at the back of Amaraâs mind.
Davidâs phone was face-down on the table.
He never did that.
And when it buzzed, his smile faltered just slightly before he flipped it over, ignoring the notification.
Amara noticed.
She said nothing.
But for the first time, a seed of doubt was planted.
****************â ***************
Amara woke up feeling restless. The dinner with David had been wonderful, yet something about the way he guarded his phone stuck with her. She wasnât the kind of woman to snoopâDavid had never given her a reason toâbut for the first time in years, she felt something was⌠off.
She pushed the thought aside as she got ready for the day. She had a packed schedule ahead, and the last thing she needed was unnecessary distractions.
At the office, Amara was already reviewing documents when Cynthia walked in.
âMa, the real estate development team is waiting for your approval on the new project designs.â
Amara nodded. âSet up a meeting for noon.â
Cynthia hesitated. âAlso, Linda isnât in yet. She called in to say sheâll be a little late.â
Amara frowned slightly. Linda was always punctual. âDid she say why?â
âNo, ma. Just that sheâll be in soon.â
Amara sighed. âAlright. Let me know when she arrives.â
Something about Lindaâs recent behavior seemed unusual. First, the sudden request for Friday off. Now, she was coming in late.
Coincidence? Maybe. But Amara had always trusted her instincts.
And right now, something didnât feel right.
.
********************************************************
By lunchtime, Amara was mentally exhausted. She had spent the morning in back-to-back meetings and was ready for a break. Just as she was about to take a moment for herself, her phone rang.
It was Chioma.
Amara sighed, picking up. âMadam lawyer, what is it this time?â
Chioma chuckled. âYou sound stressed.â
âBecause I am,â Amara muttered. âWhatâs up?â
There was a brief silence before Chioma spoke. âAre you sure everything is fine at home?â
Amaraâs brow furrowed. âChioma, what is this about?â
Chioma sighed. âI donât want to plant doubts in your head, but I heard something.â
Amara sat up. âHeard what?â
âA friend of mine mentioned seeing David at a restaurant two nights ago.â
Amara relaxed. âThat was me. We went out for dinner.â
Chioma was silent for a moment. âThis was during the day, Amara.â
A cold feeling spread in Amaraâs chest. âSo? He has meetings too, Chioma.â
âI know. But my friend said he wasnât alone.â
Amaraâs fingers tightened around her phone. âWho was he with?â
âI donât know. But the way they were talking⌠it wasnât business.â
Amara let out a short laugh, trying to push away the unease creeping in. âChioma, youâre reading too much into things. David loves me. He worships me.â
Chioma sighed. âI know he does, but that doesnât meanââ
âEnough, Chioma,â Amara snapped, surprising even herself.
There was a long silence.
Finally, Chioma said, âAlright. But if you ever feel something is wrong, donât ignore it.â
Amara swallowed. âI wonât. But thereâs nothing wrong.â
She ended the call, but the seed of doubt in her mind had just grown deeper roots.

BEHIND HER BACK đš 02
The driver drove Amara back into the compound. It's quite late. She sighed in relief as she stepped out of her car.
The moment she opened the door, a small figure came dashing toward her.
âMummy, youâre home!â
Amara laughed, scooping Zara into her arms. âYes, my love. You are still awake?
â yes mum. Daddy and I finished my solar system project!â
Amara glanced at David, who was lounging on the couch, smiling.
âSheâs a little scientist,â he said.
Amara wrapped her arms around his waist. âAnd youâre the best dad.. I'm sorry I'm quite late today"
He kissed her forehead. âAnd youâre the best mum.â
Zara giggled, watching them. âYou two are always acting like lovebirds.â
David chuckled, lifting Zara onto his shoulders. âBecause we are.â
Dinner was already set on the dining tableâsteaming jollof rice with grilled chicken, garnished with fresh vegetables.
Amara turned to David with a smile. âYou cooked?â
David shook his head. âI wish. I ordered from Mama Nkechiâs place.â
She laughed, shaking her head. âStill, you thought about it.â
They sat together, eating, talking, and laughing.
Amara found herself watching David closelyâhis easy smile, the way he listened to Zara with full attention, the way he occasionally reached for her hand.
He was her best friend. Her rock.
As the meal ended, Zara stretched and yawned. âMummy, can I sleep in your bed tonight?â
David raised a brow. âAgain? Youâre a big girl now.â
Zara pouted. âPlease?â
Amara chuckled. âAlright, just for tonight.â
Zara beamed and ran off to get her pillow.
David began clearing the table while Amara leaned against the kitchen counter, watching him.
She walked over, slipping her arms around his waist from behind. âThank you for today. For everything.â
He turned, cupping her face in his hands. âAlways.â
And as she looked into his eyes, she saw nothing but love.
" I love you David"
He smiled " I will forever love you till my last breathe" he said and their lips locked in a k!SS.
**********************
The sun was already high in the sky when Amara pulled into the company parking lot. The morning had been smoothâDavid had dropped Zara off at school, and Amara had gone through her usual morning routine before heading to work.
She felt energized, ready to tackle the dayâs challenges.
Inside Amari Group, her assistant, Cynthia, was waiting for her at the elevator.
âGood morning, ma,â Cynthia greeted, falling into step beside Amara.
âMorning. Any updates?â
âYes, ma. The new client from yesterday confirmed their interest in the luxury apartment deal, but they want some modifications.â
Amara nodded as they stepped into the elevator. âBook a meeting for tomorrow morning. What else?â
âThe finance team sent over the quarterly reports. Also, your lunch with the investors is still scheduled for today.â
The elevator doors opened, and Amara strode into her office, immediately settling into work mode. She had built this company from scratch, and moments like these reminded her how much effort it took to stay at the top...................... .............................
She was in a meeting when her phone buzzed with a message.
David: Hope your day is going well, my love.
She smiled, quickly typing back.
Amara: Very busy, but good. You?
David: Same here. Iâll pick up Zara from school today. See you later.
She felt a rush of affection for him. He always made sure to check in.
She will forever love him till eternity......................***********......................
Just as Amara was about to leave for her lunch meeting, Cynthia walked in, beaming.
âMa, someone is here to see you.â
Amara barely glanced up. âWho?â
Cynthia grinned. âYour friend Ma'am Chioma.â
Amaraâs head snapped up. âChioma?â
âYes, ma"
A huge smile spread across Amaraâs face. âBring her in!â
Moments later, Chioma strolled in, exuding confidence. She wore a fitted navy-blue dress, her makeup flawless, and her heels clicking against the polished floor.
Amara squealed, jumping to her feet. âChioma! You didnât tell me you were coming back!â
Chioma laughed, pulling her into a tight hug. âIf I told you, it wouldnât be a surprise.â
Amara pulled back, scanning her friend up and down. âYou look amazing! How was London?â
Chioma rolled her eyes playfully. âCold. Expensive. But great.â She sighed dramatically. âI missed Nigerian food. First thing I did was buy suya.â
Amara laughed, shaking her head. âYou havenât changed.â
They sat down, catching up quickly. Chioma filled her in on her trip, the legal cases she had handled, and the high-profile divorce settlements she had won.
Then she leaned in slightly. âAnd you? Howâs my favorite couple? Howâs David?â
Amara smiled. âDavid is fine. Everything is fine.â
Chioma tilted her head. âThatâs all? âEverything is fineâ?â
Amara frowned slightly. âWhat else should I say?â
Chioma shrugged. âNothing, I guess. I just wanted to know if anything has changed.â
Amara studied her friend. âWhy would anything change?â
Chioma hesitated, then sighed. âYou know, being a divorce lawyer has made me see things differently. Iâve handled so many cases where women thought their marriages were perfectâuntil they werenât.â
Amara chuckled. âChioma, not every man is a cheating, lying husband. David is different.â
Chioma smiled, but there was a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. âI hope so. But you know what I always sayâtrust, but verify.â
Amara waved her off playfully. âPlease, I donât need your lawyer paranoia in my marriage.â
Chioma laughed. âFine, fine. I wonât say anything more. Just promise me that if you ever need my help, you wonât hesitate to call.â
Amara squeezed her hand. âI promise. But trust me, I wonât need it.â
Chioma smiled, but before she could respond, a soft knock interrupted them.
" Come in " Amara said.
The office door swung open, and a young woman stepped in with a confident stride.
âGood afternoon, ma,â she said, flashing a bright smile.
Amara turned to her. âYes, Linda?â
Linda is her secretary, efficient and always well-dressed. Today, she wore a fitted blouse and pencil skirt, her hair in a neat ponytail. She was young, smart, and ambitiousâone of the best hires Amara had made.
âI just wanted to drop off the updated reports for the real estate division,â Linda said, setting a file on the desk. âAlso, Mr. David called. He said to remind you that heâs picking up Zara today.â
Amara smiled. âAlright, thank you.â
Linda nodded and turned to leave, but not before glancing at Chioma.
Chioma watched her leave, then turned back to Amara with a curious expression. âThatâs your secretary?â
âYes. Sheâs been with me for a while now. Why?â
Chioma shrugged. âNothing. Just observing.â
Amara raised an eyebrow. âYou and your lawyer instincts.â
Chioma smirked. âI canât help it. I see patterns in people.â
âTrust me, thereâs nothing to see here.â
Chioma didnât argue, but she gave Amara a look that made her pause for a brief second.
Then she brushed it off.
Nothing was wrong.*****************â ********
By the time Amara got home, Zara was already on the couch watching her favorite cartoon. David sat beside her, laughing at something on the screen.
Amara leaned against the doorway, watching them for a moment.
Her perfect family.
David noticed her and grinned. âMummyâs home!â
Zara jumped up, running to her. âMummy, we learned about the solar system today!â
Amara lifted her into a hug. âThatâs wonderful, my love.â
David stretched lazily. âLong day?â
She sighed, dropping her bag. âVery. But productive.â

BEHIND HER BACK đš 01
Amara adjusted her earrings in front of the mirror, smoothing invisible wrinkles on her emerald-green evening gown. The silk fabric hugged her curves just right, radiating elegance and powerâtwo things she had earned through years of relentless hard work.
At thirty-five, she was at the peak of her career, the CEO of Amari Group, one of the most successful real estate firms in the country. She had built her empire from scratch, working her way up in a male-dominated industry, proving time and time again that she was more than just a pretty face.
And yet, despite all her success, the greatest treasure in her life wasnât her wealth or influence.
It was her family.
She glanced at the framed wedding photo on her vanity. She and David, fresh out of university, full of dreams, standing in front of a small altar, exchanging vows with love-struck eyes. They had started with nothing, just two ambitious young lovers with big dreams.
Now, years later, they had built something beautiful togetherâa marriage rooted in love, trust, and unwavering support.
David had always been her biggest cheerleader, the man who celebrated every success as if it were his own. He had pursued architecture while she climbed the corporate ladder, and though her career had skyrocketed beyond his, he had never shown resentment, never made her feel guilty for her achievements.
And Zaraâtheir ten-year-old daughterâwas the heart of their world.
Zara was brilliant, fearless, and curious, always asking questions beyond her age. She had her fatherâs charm and her motherâs resilience, a perfect blend of both of them.
Tonight was special. Their wedding anniversary.
A soft knock at the door pulled Amara from her thoughts.
âMummy, Daddy says weâre waiting for you!â Zaraâs excited voice echoed from the hallway.
Amara smiled, reaching for her clutch. âIâm coming, princess.â
As she stepped out of the bedroom, she saw David standing at the bottom of the staircase, looking up at her with the same admiration he had given her since the day they met.
âYou look breathtaking,â he said, his voice full of warmth.
She descended the stairs gracefully, taking his outstretched hand. âAnd you, Mr. Daniels, look quite handsome yourself.â
He leaned in, pressing a kiss to her cheek. âReady for our anniversary dinner?â
âOf course,â she said, feeling the familiar comfort of his touch.
Zara came running in, her hair bouncing as she grinned. âMummy, you look like a princess!â
Amara bent down, kissing her forehead. âAnd you, my love, are my little princess.â
David wrapped an arm around both of them, his family. His world.
They were the perfect family.
And life was perfect..
*****************
The restaurant was intimate, with dim lighting and soft jazz playing in the background. The air carried the aroma of fine wine and freshly grilled steak.
David reached for Amaraâs hand across the table. âTen years, love. Can you believe it?â
She chuckled, sipping her wine. âFeels like yesterday when you stood at the altar, sweating like a nervous schoolboy.â
David laughed. âYou wouldâve been nervous too if you were about to marry the most amazing woman in the world.â
She rolled her eyes. âFlattery will get you everywhere, Mr. Daniels.â
âThatâs the plan.â
Their laughter blended with the music. It was effortless, the kind of love people envied.
Amara took a deep breath. âI wouldnât change a thing about our life, David. You and Zara mean everything to me.â
Davidâs gaze softened. âAnd you mean everything to me.â
Their fingers intertwined. The moment was perfect.
No distractions. No doubts.
Just love...**********************
It was past Zaraâs bedtime when they got home, but she was still awake, curled up on the couch, watching an animated movie.
âZara,â David called softly. âYou should be in bed.â
She pouted. âBut I wanted to wait for you and Mummy.â
Amara smiled, lifting her into her arms. âCome on, sleepyhead. Letâs get you to bed.â
Zara wrapped her arms around her motherâs neck, yawning. âGood night, Daddy.â
âGood night, princess.â
Amara carried Zara upstairs, tucking her in and brushing stray hair from her forehead. She leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her daughterâs temple.
âGood night, my love.â
Zara smiled sleepily. âGood night, Mummy.â
As Amara turned off the lights and stepped out, she felt nothing but peace.
Her husband loved her and her daughter adored her.
Her life was perfect.***************************************************
The city was waking up, and so was Amara.
She stirred slightly, her body still curled under the soft, white duvet. The room was dim, with only faint streaks of sunlight filtering through the curtains.
Slowly, she reached out to the other side of the bed, expecting to feel Davidâs warm presence beside her.
Empty.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she glanced at the bedside clock. 6:30 AM.
A slow smile crept across her lips. David was up early, as usual.
She stretched lazily, listening to the familiar sounds of home andâthe smell of breakfast?
She sat up, her smile widening. Of course.
David always made breakfast when he woke up before her. It was one of the things she loved about himâhis thoughtfulness, the way he handled little things without being asked.
Sliding her feet into her indoor slippers, she slipped on her silk robe and made her way out of the bedroom. The house was quiet, save for the distant sound of sizzling oil and clinking dishes.
As she stepped into the kitchen, the sight before her made her heart swell.
David stood by the stove, expertly flipping slices of yam in a frying pan. He wore his usual grey joggers and a white singlet, his back slightly turned as he concentrated on the food.
At the dining table, Zara sat, still in her pajamas, her legs swinging under the chair as she sipped from a steaming cup of Milo.
A warm feeling spread through Amaraâs chest. This was home. This was love.
âMummy!â Zaraâs eyes lit up the moment she saw her. âDaddy is making my favorite breakfast!â
Amara chuckled, walking into the kitchen and wrapping her arms around David from behind. âGood morning, my love.â
David turned his head slightly, smiling as he placed a hand over hers. âGood morning, beautiful. Slept well?â
She inhaled his scentâfresh, warm, familiar. âLike a baby.â
Zara beamed. âBut I woke up before Daddy today!â
David chuckled. âShe was too excited about her school project.â
Amara raised a brow. âSchool project?â
Zara nodded eagerly. âWeâre building a mini solar system! Daddy said heâll help me finish mine today.â
Amara smiled as she sat at the table. David was an amazing father. No matter how busy he was, he always made time for their daughter.
âHere you go, ladies,â David said, setting down plates of fried yam, eggs, and freshly made pepper sauce.
Zara clapped her hands. âDaddy, you should open a restaurant!â
David laughed. âIâll think about it.â
Amara picked up her fork, watching the two of them banter as they ate. This was her life. Her family. And she wouldnât trade it for anything.************************************
The drive to her office was smooth, though the city was already bustling with life. Traders setting up their roadside stalls, yellow buses honking as they navigated traffic, pedestrians weaving their way across busy streets.
By the time she arrived at Amari Group, her assistant, Cynthia, was already waiting for her.
âGood morning, ma,â Cynthia greeted, falling into step beside her as they walked toward the office building.
âMorning, Cynthia. Howâs the schedule looking today?â
âQuite packed,â Cynthia said, scrolling through her tablet. âYou have a 9 AM strategy meeting, then a property inspection by noon. Also, Mr. Bayo from FirstTrust Bank confirmed lunch at one.â
Amara nodded. âAnything urgent?â
âJust some contract reviews. I placed them on your desk.â
She exhaled, already feeling the weight of the day ahead. But this was what she had worked for. This was what she lovedâthe thrill of building something from the ground up.
As she stepped into her office, her gaze fell on a framed picture on her deskâa photo of her, David, and Zara, taken on Zaraâs last birthday.
She smiled.
They were her motivation. Her reason for everything.
