Client Red Flags Designers Should Watch Out For 🚩

Not every project is worth the stress. Here are 4 red flags you should never ignore as a designer:

1. ❌ “I need it urgently, but I’ll pay later.”
2. ❌ No clear feedback, just “I’ll know it when I see it.”
3. ❌ Keeps asking for “just one more revision” every time.
4. ❌ Disrespects your time or boundaries.

🚨 Trust your gut. Protect your peace. Value your craft.

Another Essential Question Designers Should Ask:

"WHAT ARE YOUR BRAND GUIDELINES?"

✅ What are brand guidelines?
Brand guidelines are a set of rules that define how a brand should visually and verbally appear. They're like a "style manual" for keeping everything consistent.

🔧 What’s usually included in brand guidelines?

1. Logo Usage
- Approved logo versions (full color, black & white, icon only)
- Spacing rules, minimum size, and background restrictions
- What not to do with the logo

2. Color Palette
- Primary and secondary brand colors (with HEX, RGB, CMYK codes)
- Guidelines on where and how to use each color

3. Fonts / Typography
- Brand fonts (headlines, body text, etc.)
- Font sizes, weights, and spacing
- Replacement fonts for web or print, if needed

4. Imagery Style
- Preferred photo style (e.g. natural, bright, minimal, dark, etc.)
- Icon or illustration style, if applicable

5. Tone of Voice (optional)
- How the brand speaks — friendly, formal, playful, etc. (good for social media/text)

---

🛑 Why it matters:
Without brand guidelines, every design might look different — that kills brand recognition and makes the brand look unprofessional or inconsistent.---

💬 As a designer, always ask:
- “Do you have existing brand guidelines?”
- “What fonts and colors does your brand use?”
- “Can you send your logo in high quality?”

If they don’t have one, you can offer to help create it — that’s a valuable service!

IMPORTANT QUESTION GRAPHIC DESIGNERS SHOULD ASK:

“Where will this design be used?”

This question matters a lot because the final output (print, screen, web, etc.) directly affects how you prepare the design. Here's what each part means:

✅ 1. Resolution
This is about image clarity, measured in DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch).

- Print (flyers, billboards, packaging):Needs high resolution — usually 300 DPI
- Digital (social media, websites):Standard is 72 or 96 DPI

Why it matters:
If you design at low resolution for print, it will look blurry or pixelated when printed.

✅ 2. Color Mode
This affects how colors appear in your design, depending on the platform.

- Print: Use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) — colors blend differently on paper
- Digital: Use RGB (Red, Green, Blue) — screens use light to show color

Why it matters:
If you use RGB for print, colors may look totally different or dull when printed.

✅ 3. Size & Format
Ask: What's the physical or pixel size of the final design?

- Billboard: Large scale — needs vector graphics or very high-resolution images
- Social media:Specific sizes (e.g. 1080x1080px for Instagram)- Packaging: Needs exact die-line templates and bleed margins

Why it matters:
Wrong size = stretched, cropped, or rejected by printers or platforms.

🎯 Summary:
Design output determines your file setup.
Always ask:
→ Is it for print or screen?
→ What size, color mode, and file format is needed?
