AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR BEROM POLITICAL LEADERS

THE SILENCE OF TODAY AND THE COURAGE OF YESTERDAY

Dear Berom Political Leaders,

Today, we write not in anger but in disappointment.

Not because we hate you.

Not because we wish you evil.

But because we remember.

We remember a time when many of you stood boldly before cameras, microphones, newspapers, and television stations to defend what you believed was in the best interest of Plateau State.

We remember the days of the Jos Terminus Market and Jaiz Bank controversy during the administration of former Governor Simon Lalong.

Whether one agreed with every argument made at the time or not, one thing was certain:

Many of you spoke.

Many of you fought.

Many of you challenged decisions publicly.

Many of you issued statements.

Many of you granted interviews.

Many of you mobilized public opinion.

Many of you made it clear that when Plateau was involved, silence was not an option.

The people praised you.

The people respected you.

The people believed they had leaders who would always speak whenever issues affecting Plateau arose.

Names such as Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos and several others became household names because they consistently voiced concerns and defended positions they believed were right for Plateau.

At that time, silence was unacceptable.

At that time, speaking up was called leadership.

At that time, many of you told us that public office was about defending the people.

Today, however, many ordinary citizens are asking:

What has changed?

WE ARE WATCHING

Across Plateau State, discussions about indigeneity, identity, indigenous rights, and the future of communities have dominated conversations.

The matter is no longer a private discussion.

It is being debated in homes.

It is being debated in markets.

It is being debated in churches.

It is being debated on social media.

It is being debated across the country.

Yet many of the voices that once spoke loudly appear absent.

Many of the leaders who once held press conferences appear missing.

Many of the representatives who once challenged policies appear quiet.

And the people are noticing.

We are watching.

We are listening.

And we are asking questions.

ONLY A FEW VOICES HAVE BEEN HEARD

Whether people agree or disagree with their positions, many citizens have heard the voice of Da Jonah David Jang on matters affecting Plateau.

Many have also heard the voice of Da Dudu, President of BECO.

These individuals have publicly expressed concerns and opinions regarding issues affecting indigenous communities.

The question many citizens are asking is simple:

Where are the rest of our leaders?

Where are our senators?

Where are our members of the House of Representatives?

Where are our members of the State Assembly?

Where are our local government leaders?

Where are the people who promised to represent us?

Surely, an issue of this magnitude deserves public engagement.

Surely, the people deserve to know where their leaders stand.

Surely, leadership requires communication.

HAVE OUR LEADERS CHANGED OR HAS POLITICS CHANGED THEM?

This is the question many people are beginning to ask.

When the Terminus and Jaiz Bank matter arose, opposition politicians spoke with courage.

Today many of those same voices occupy positions of influence.

Many are now closer to power than they were then.

And so the people ask:

Has political office changed the courage we once admired?

Has proximity to power changed the willingness to speak?

Has party loyalty become more important than public accountability?

These questions may be uncomfortable.

But they are legitimate.

Because leadership is not tested when it is convenient.

Leadership is tested when speaking carries consequences.

REPRESENTATION IS NOT SEASONAL

Representation should not appear only during campaigns.

Representation should not disappear after elections.

Representation should not depend on political calculations.

The people who voted remain.

The communities remain.

The concerns remain.

The expectations remain.

If our leaders could speak passionately during previous controversies, surely they can speak now.

If they could organize press conferences then, surely they can address their constituents now.

If they could challenge government policies then, surely they can explain their positions now.

The people deserve answers.

The people deserve clarity.

The people deserve leadership.

WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR INSULTS

Let nobody misunderstand us.

We are not asking our leaders to insult anyone.

We are not asking them to promote hatred.

We are not asking them to create division.

We are asking them to communicate.

To clarify.

To engage.

To lead.

To tell the people what is happening.

To tell the people what they are doing.

To tell the people where they stand.

Silence creates confusion.

Leadership provides direction.

A WORD TO OUR POLITICAL LEADERS

History is watching.

The people are watching.

Young people are watching.

Future generations are watching.

The same courage that made many of you popular during previous struggles is the same courage the people expect today.

Do not allow the people to conclude that your voice only appears when it is politically convenient.

Do not allow history to say that you fought bravely when outside power but became silent when close to it.

Do not allow your legacy to be defined by silence.

TO THE PEOPLE OF BEROMLAND

Continue asking questions respectfully.

Continue demanding accountability respectfully.

Continue holding leaders accountable respectfully.

Do not insult.

Do not threaten.

Do not spread falsehood.

But never stop demanding representation.

Because democracy works best when leaders know that the people are paying attention.

FINAL WORD

To every Berom political leader:

We celebrate your successes.

We pray for your protection.

We appreciate your sacrifices.

But we also remind you that leadership requires visibility during difficult moments.

The people are waiting.

The people are listening.

The people deserve to hear from you.

And until then, the silence will continue to raise questions.

Signed,

A Concerned Voice From Beromland

To my dear people, I want you to know that I stand with you at all times, especially during these difficult moments of insecurity. The blood of innocent people is being shed every day, and this has become a major concern to all of us. We can no longer eat in peace or sleep with peace of mind because of the continuous attacks and loss of lives in our communities.

I share in your pain, sorrow, and concerns. Your safety and well-being remain my utmost priority. However, we must not lose hope. Everything that has a beginning also has an end. I strongly believe that with unity, determination, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, lasting peace and security will soon return to our land.

Let us remain strong, prayerful, and united. Better days are ahead, and together we shall overcome these challenges.

May God comfort the affected families, protect our communities, and grant us lasting peace.

HON. BES B. PAM
