DSS petitions
X, demands deactivation of Sowore's account over disparaging post against President Tinubu.
By Ada Ononye
The Department of State Services has petitioned X Corporation, demanding the deactivation of the verified account of activist Omoyele Sowore over what it describes as a disparaging post against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The agency says the tweet is dangerous, misleading, and capable of inciting violence, threatening national security, and discrediting Nigeria before the international community.
In the petition dated September 6, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman and CEO of X Corp. in Texas, USA, the DSS accused Sowore of spreading false and offensive content through his August 25 post. The activist, in a late-night tweet referencing Tinubuโs official handle, wrote: โThis criminal actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!โ
The DSS says those words were directly targeted at the President, describing them as false, misleading, indecent, and a violation of privacy. It warned that the tweet has already attracted condemnation, street protests by Tinubuโs supporters, and risks escalating political tension across the country.
The petition, signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director-General of the DSS, insists that the statement contravenes several Nigerian laws:
Section 51 of the Criminal Code Act, which prohibits false publication.
Sections 19, 22, and 24 of the Cybercrimes Act 2025, which outlaw fake news, offensive and indecent online content, and cyber harassment.
Section 2(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, which criminalises statements likely to provoke ethnic or political unrest.
The security agency further accused Sowore of willfully promoting hate speech, online harassment, and an ideology capable of causing disunity, domestic terrorism..

EBOLA OUTBREAK: NCDC move to block important amids DRC spread.
According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated emergency measures to prevent the spread of Ebola virus disease into the country following a fresh outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In a public advisory issued on Saturday, NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, confirmed that no case had been detected in Nigeria but warned that heightened surveillance was now in place, especially at airports, seaports, and land borders.
The centre said infection prevention and control protocols were being reinforced across hospitals to protect both patients and health workers. Risk communication teams have also been deployed to counter rumours and provide accurate information to the public.
Nigerians were urged to maintain strict hygiene, wash hands regularly, and avoid physical contact with anyone showing unexplained fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or bleeding.
The agency warned against handling fruit bats, monkeys, or apes, and advised that meat must be thoroughly cooked before consumption.
Travellers returning from affected countries were told to report symptoms immediately via the toll-free line 6232.
NCDC noted that while vaccines and therapeutics exist for some strains, early detection, isolation, and safe burial practices remain critical to curbing transmission.
As of September 5, DR Congo had reported 28 suspected cases and 16 deaths, including four health workers.
