REPORT ON DAY 2

*Morning Session: Opening Ceremony and Technical Proceedings*

The second day of the FIDA Nigeria 2026 2nd Quarter National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting commenced with the rendition of the National Anthem, FIDA Anthem, and Women Anthem, setting a dignified tone for the day's proceedings.

The Chairperson of FIDA Abuja Branch, Mrs. Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko, delivered the welcome address, warmly receiving delegates from the 46 FIDA branches across the Federation. She highlighted the significance of the meeting's theme, "Strengthening Women's Representation in Democratic Governance: Law, Policy and Practice," describing it as both timely and compelling. She called for a critical reflection on the progress made towards women's inclusion in governance while acknowledging the persistent challenges that continue to hinder meaningful participation. She also appreciated everyone who contributed to the success of the NEC Meeting, with special recognition given to the FIDA Gwagwalada and Suleja Branches.

The Country Vice President/National President, Mrs. Eliana Martins, delivered her opening address, emphasizing the importance of the theme to Nigeria's democratic development. She commended the host branch, members of the Local Organising Committee, development partners, and all delegates for their dedication and commitment to the success of the meeting.

Goodwill messages were received from distinguished members of the Judiciary, the FIDA International President, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Her Excellency Hon. Justice Suzette Eberechi Nyesom Wike, JCA (Matron, FIDA Abuja Branch), development partners, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders, all reaffirming their commitment to advancing gender equality, justice, and democratic governance.

The keynote address was delivered by Hon. Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, who examined the state of women's representation in Nigeria's democratic process. She stressed that increased women's participation in leadership is essential for democratic legitimacy, good governance, and sustainable national development. She advocated for the effective implementation of legal and policy frameworks that promote gender inclusion, encouraged FIDA Nigeria to complement advocacy with strategic political engagement, and urged stakeholders to intensify preparations for the implementation of the proposed Special Seats Bill ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The Chairman's Opening Remarks, delivered on behalf of Hon. Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf by Hon. Justice Mariam E. Ali, applauded FIDA Nigeria's enduring commitment to justice, the protection of vulnerable persons, and the promotion of the rule of law. She emphasized that meaningful representation requires the dismantling of institutional barriers through sustained advocacy, policy reforms, and judicial support. She further encouraged female legal practitioners to remain steadfast in championing justice and equality before formally declaring the meeting open.

The Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Hajiya Maimuna Shua'ibu, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to delegates, partners, and all who contributed to the success of the programme. The morning session concluded with a group photograph.
