Introducing The Mathstars Africa Initiative.

Maya Angelou said “There's no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”. If it's so and true about a story, how great would be the pangs of agony from bearing inside you, an IDEA/VISION whose time is long passed. Only a pregnant woman can say what it is like to stay with a child beyond the 9th month threshold.

So I've borne this vision for so long and in distress too, having to think it through and turn it all over and again. However, according to Mark Zuckerberg, “No idea comes fully formed…” Similarly, my mentor Hakeem Subair, CEO 1 Million Teachers, says on another note that, "you don't need to have all the answers before you start, so don't over analyze, just start…”

I'm not a mainstream Mathematics professional, however, I've taught Mathematics and Basic Numeracy from upper primary classes through senior secondary classes for about a decade. And this is so because of love and passion, I derive great joy doing so, and have taught students who turn out excellent. Notwithstanding,ONE experience is consistent with typically all learners, the experience that is now known as MATH_PHOBIA, a fear or strong dislike of mathematics, stemming from various factors like stereotypes, gender role/biases, past failures, perceived/falsely acclaimed difficulty, lack of engaging learning methods etc.

Math phobia jinxes, not only the average and low learners, but sadly also, it's sometimes worse with the supposed high flyers, leaving everyone in wonder why some students who do excellently in other subjects tend to have terribly bad outcomes with Maths. As a matter of fact, most students who run away from sciences and STEM careers do so simply for the fear of Maths.

I've asked a number of students several times, “Why are you in the ARTs?" and the common response is; “I don't know MATHs” or “I can’t do Maths”, indicating that Maths is either too difficult or simply impossible. It would be nice to hear them speak about a dream career in the ARTs but no, instead, the fear of Math scares and stops them short, making almost all students/pupils argue on why math is made a Compulsory subject.

I started out very poor in Mathematics until Jss3 when the story changed, so I am concerned about the children who could be great scientists, engineers, technicians, astronauts, health personnel, world problem solvers etc, But for fear of Math. In dire cases, some pupils/students dropout of school for fear of Maths and/or the Maths teacher.

The Mathstars Africa Initiative is an attempt to undo this fear, inspire a love for the subject Mathematics, explore its relevance, boost student's confidence, improve participation and overall performance while preparing them to realize and utilize their great potential for successful STEM careers.

We shall be working directly with teachers of Mathematics at Basic school levels through Senior Secondary School classes to drive the impact. This is the beginning of our journey to undoing revolutionizing math_literacy in Africa and raising the next generation of math stars, critical thinkers and problem solvers.

Stay tuned for details and opportunities for collaboration and partnership.

Incredible MathQueen...
However she began from somewhere...
Do take a step forward in the direction of success... Many times it results from CONSISTENCY rather than inborn Competence.
