2018 Institute of Philosophy and Political Theory for Young People

Over the years the teaching of philosophical thought, especially in the social sciences and political theory has declined. This has affected the quality of critical thinking of university students. Yet, without critical thinking, we get graduates of university who are no different from students of craft school who narrowly acquired craft skills without understanding the underlying logics of either the skills or the trade they will practice.

Ibrahim Muazzam of the Department of Political Science, Bayero University, Kano has extensive experience teaching political theory, political philosophy, third world theories and other related topics that have continued to influence the critical thinking of many people who have passed through Bayero University, Kano. Many of these courses have either been phased out or that the explosion in student population has made it impossible to maintain the ambiance of the past that allowed for debates and more rigorous treatment of many important topics that impact on the critical thinking faculty of students.

The resourcefulness, versatility, depth of knowledge, roundedness and intellectual robustness of Ibrahim Muazzam is reflected in the glowing nostalgia with which many of his former students and associates reflect on what they took from him. It is this that CITAD would like to share with younger generations of students and graduates.

In 2017 CITAD started an annual institute for philosophical thoughts for young people. The institute is grounded around these aspects of intellectual grooming by getting Ibrahim Muazzam principally, but also many other critical thinkers to facilitate the sessions of institute.

The second edition of the institute will take place in Kano in first or second week of November 2018, at a date and venue to be decided later. It will be for a period of three days and non-residential.

The institute has three key engagements. A reading of the classical political thought, theory and philosophy through lectures; engagement with current topics of interests; and debates to shape the intellectual engagement of the participants.

The maiden edition was hugely successful. If you wish to participate in the second edition of thr institute please send to us the following information:

Name in full
Affiliation/contact address
Highest qualification, please indicate discipline/subject studied.
Qualification in view and expected date of completion, if still in active study
Valid e-mail address
Valid phone number(s)
Preference will be given to social science and humanities university graduates and final year students.

We are unable to provide scholarships, therefore, you should be responsible for your transportation (including local transportation) and accommodation (for those who reside outside Kano).

Send your response to [email protected] or call/send sms text message to 080068078282, 08054362931, 08036509534, 07033427467 for further information.

GOMBE YOUTHS WAKE UP FROM YOUR
SLUMBER
Gombe youths are the only ones I see still
posting and campaigning for some old people
that are meant to be wiped out or retired so they
go and rest and allow their children to participate
in politics. After all the call up letters by past
politicians and leaders urging the youths to
participate in politics because they can't be given
power in a platter of gold which we all know
power is not given but rather taken especially in a
country like nigeria. Towards last year ending I
saw alot of posters of youths seeking for a
political seat or the other and I was like yess! The
youths are awaken with full force!! but right now I
don't see such posters anymore instead I see
youths genuflecting for this same old politicians
and even campaigning for them. Gombe youths
are we really awake of our slumber. Let's not
allow the worse of us to decide and rule the best
of us cos the best of us refuse to involve in
politics thinking they are too good for politics or
thinking they are busy shaping their career not
knowing politics affect everything in Nigeria.
Let's have a platform to mobilise ourselves and
vote ourselves in cos no one will d that for us
especially at this critical condition were everybody
is hungry for power.

Dear Teacher or Administrator,
90% of parents want schools to teach computer
programming, and students love it.
Computer science opens more doors than any
other discipline. Learning the basics will help
students in any career—from architecture to
zoology. 71% of all US jobs require digital skills.
And high-skilled computing occupations are the
fastest-growing , best-paying , and now the
largest sector of all new wages in the US.
9 out of 10 parents want schools to teach
computer science ( Gallup poll), and students
rank it among their favorite subjects , behind
only art and music. Just as they learn how to
write an essay or how electricity works, it’s
important for every 21st century student to have
a chance to learn how the internet works or
design an app.
Will you help bring computer science to our
school?
Tens of thousands of schools have made
commitments to add computer science to the
school day. We can do it too. We don’t need to
hire new teachers. We just need to make this a
priority, and take advantage of FREE resources
offered by Code.org:
• Curriculum for a full K-12 computer
science pathway
• Workshops to prepare any passionate
teacher to begin teaching computer
science.
• Resources to help administrators plan
adding computer science to the school
day
The options above are almost entirely free,
courtesy of Code.org. There are also great
options offered by other organizations .
Are you interested in teaching computer
science?
Teachers don't need a technical background to
get started. Code.org offers hands-on
workshops across the country that can help
existing teachers learn CS and how to teach it.
The majority of teachers who attend rank it the
“best professional development ever”.
Put our school on the map
Whether we are expanding our existing
computer science offering, or starting a brand
new program, we should participate in the
growing movement to add computer science to
the school day. Please put our school on the
map .
Sincerely,
A parent / community member

Code.org: Anybody can Learn Every student in every school deserves the opportunity to study computer science.
