A STORY

Adeola was once a bright and ambitious student, always eager to learn and excel in school. However, his perspective on education began to shift when he saw his street big brother, Olu, a jobless graduate, struggling to find employment. Olu would often complain about the lack of job opportunities and how the system was rigged against him.

Adeola, who looked up to Olu as a role model, began to buy into the idea that "school na scam." He started to believe that spending years in school was a waste of time, and that many graduates like Olu were ending up with nothing to show for it. As a result, Adeola lost his passion for education and started to slack off in school.

Years went by, and Adeola's academic performance suffered greatly. He struggled to find motivation to study and eventually lost interest in pursuing his dreams. Meanwhile, Olu's situation didn't improve, and he continued to struggle to find a job.

It wasn't until much later, when Adeola was reflecting on his own life choices, that he realized the truth about Olu's situation. He discovered that Olu's joblessness wasn't due to a lack of job opportunities, but rather because he lacked the skills, experience, and attitude that employers were looking for. Olu's poor academic record, lack of extracurricular activities, and unprofessional demeanor made him unemployable.

Adeola was devastated by this realization. He realized that he had been misled by Olu's narrative and had lost valuable opportunities because of it. He wished he could go back in time and tell his younger self to ignore Olu's negative views and stay focused on his education.

Stories like this are common among young people in secondary and higher education institutions. Sometimes, I intentionally pose probing questions to my students to gauge their thoughts and perspectives on specific topics. One such question is: "Does anyone here believe that people can achieve success without schooling and education?"

Typically, 8 to 10 hands shoot up, and each student enthusiastically shares their views, often defending their assumptions with references to influential and wealthy individuals. After they've presented their points, I confidently interject, "That's not true; no one achieves greatness without the power of schooling and education."

They might object, citing examples of successful individuals, but I respond with conviction, "I acknowledge their successes, and I'd argue that they too leveraged the power of schooling and education."

My thoughtful and insightful counterpoints often leave them nodding in contemplation, responding with a thoughtful "Hmmm" and a smile.

There are many such misconceptions about schooling and education that go unaddressed in students' minds, undermining the value of learning.

School Way aims to tackle these assumptions and other contentious questions, providing clarity and insights to empower students. By addressing these challenges, we can help students appreciate the significance of education and unlock their full potential.
