On the 29th of May on Radio Maria, the host Chidi Justine hosted a discussion on the topic โDriving Safety in Rainy Conditions.โ
Guests on the program included:
* I.S.M. Dr. Timothy Daniel John
* S.M. Olorunnisona Sunday Borndele
* R.C. Dickson Adamu
* Engr Ola
The host began by asking why road crashes usually increase during the rainy season.
Engr Ola explained that whenever seasons change, driving habits should also change. He stated that the need for safety consciousness becomes even more important during the rainy season. According to him, wet roads and water on the road require drivers to adjust their speed and driving style.
He also advised drivers not to follow vehicles too closely during rainfall because visibility becomes poor and stopping distance increases.
Dr. Timothy emphasized the importance of regular eye checks for drivers, noting that good eyesight is essential for safe driving, especially during poor weather conditions.
The guests highlighted important vehicle safety checks that drivers should carry out before driving in the rain, including:
* Ensuring windscreen wipers are working properly
* Checking that car tyres are in good condition
* Making sure vehicle lights are functioning well
* Confirming the air conditioner or car fan is working properly to improve visibility
* Checking indicators/trafficators before driving
Engr Ola further stated that many Nigerians lack adequate safety consciousness because people tend to rely more on God while paying less attention to necessary safety measures. He stressed that both prayer and proper safety precautions are important for preventing road crashes.

Yet many roads still lack:
โ Safe crossings
โ Functional walkways
โ Speed management
โ Traffic calming measures
Through the campaign, we are using Mobility Snapshots to amplify community voices and advocate for safer streets for all road users.

The streets we use every day should be safe for everyone, especially people who walk and cycle.
As part of the 2026 Campaign by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, GreenLight Initiative is once again taking action to demand safer roads in Abuja through the Mobility Snapshot campaign.
This year, we are building on our previous advocacy successes and pushing for safer, people-centred streets.

Traffic lights are there to keep everyone safe and traffic moving smoothly.
Red means stop, yellow means get ready, and green means go. When we all follow these simple signals, we help prevent road crashes, reduce traffic congestion, and keep order on our roads.
Ignoring traffic lights can lead to serious crashes, injuries, and loss of lives. Letโs all do our part - drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians - by obeying traffic lights every time.
Safety starts with you.
