Six things you shouldn’t do while charging your phone
Many phone users tend to complain that their device’s batteries discharge quickly. They also typically blame the product manufacturer for this issue; however, the manufacturer isn’t always at fault. Here are some five mistakes that users typically make when charging their phones.
*Waiting for the Battery to reach low levels before charging*
Avoid waiting for your battery to reach a critically low level before charging. The effect of this on your phone battery is not immediate, but over time it begins to manifest and it eventually stresses out your phone battery (yes, batteries get stressed too) and shortens the battery life. Think of your ,battery as a human body, you really don’t need to wait until you’re about to die before you rest and eat to recharge yourself.
*Keeping your phone case on while charging*
Your phone typically emits heat when charging. To avoid exposing your device to ambient ,temperatures, it’s advisable to remove the phone case while charging your phone so that the ,heat emitted from your phone while charging can escape. This way you can prevent your device from becoming hotter and potentially overheating when charging. Charging your battery at uncomfortable temperatures can permanently damage battery capacity.
*Charging your phone in the wrong places*
You should mind where you charge your phone, because not doing so can negatively affect your battery capacity. Phones have a temperature range they can function normally and charging your phone in a hot area can raise the temperature and stress the battery out. Also, charging your phone in especially low temperature areas, like in front of an air conditioner, can also cause problems for your battery that will eventually affect its optimum performance.
*your phone overnight*
The least you’ll sleep throughout the night is most likely going to be between 5 to 8 hours, your smartphone battery typically only needs 2 to 3 hours to fully charge. Charging your phone overnight, constantly stresses your phone battery each night. Sooner than later, your phone is likely to have battery problems. In addition, the temperature rises when the battery is overcharged, so apart from shortening battery life, it can also threaten user’s safety in the event it quickly heats up and explodes. It’s better to charge your phone before you sleep and switch it off while sleeping to preserve the battery till the next day.
*Plugging whatever charger fits*
This especially applies to smartphones. Most smartphones use a micro USB for its chargers and for this reasons most people tend to switch and swap chargers since it fits into and works on their phones. However, this is not appropriate and in the long run it can negatively affect your phone battery. The fact that most smartphones have the same micro USB doesn’t mean all chargers and phones are compatible. Some chargers function differently and that difference can be detrimental to your device if care is not taken.
*Using cheap chargers*
You can find a, number of manufacturers offering top-grade chargers. No wonder these chargers are cheaper than the original ones. However, there are some that don’t include any safety mechanism against overcharging and continuous fluctuations. Unfortunately, if there is an adapter failure, it can damage the battery as well as a phone. So, act smart and stick to the original charger.

At 19-years-old, Betelhem Dessie is perhaps the youngest pioneer in Ethiopia’s fast emerging tech scene, sometimes referred to as “Sheba Valley.”Dessie is coordinating a number of nationwide programs run by robotics lab iCog, the Addis Ababa based artificial intelligence (AI) lab that was involved in developing the world famous Sophia the robot.
She has four software programs copyrighted solely to her name – including an app developed for the Ethiopian government to map rivers used for irrigation. And it all began when she was just 9.She recalls: “On my 9th birthday I wanted to celebrate so I asked my father for money.” When her father said he didn’t have any to give her that day, Dessie took matters into her own hands.Making use of the materials around her – her father sold electronics in their home city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia – Dessie started with small tasks such as video editing and sending music to customer’s cell phones.”I got about 90 dollars – then I celebrated my birthday” she laughs, sitting in one of the robotics and coding rooms at iCog, Ethiopia’s first AI lab.iCog launched in 2013 and Ethiopia’s tech industry is set to take off even faster this year following the liberalization of the country’s economy under new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed .Abiy who took office in April, has part privatized a number of state owned companies including telecoms provider Ethio Telecom. It’s a bid to hopefully pave the way for better internet access. The country is seeing huge changes following a government sanctioned internet blackout that took place prior to Abiy taking office.
Practical apps for the community
One program Dessie leads on at iCog is “Solve IT”, which works with young people to find technological solutions to community based problems.Dessie travels the length and breadth of the country working with students (some up to five years her senior) to inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.Being younger, she says, means she and other teachers are “more in touch with what the students are experiencing.” In the same way women teaching women can be impactful, she adds, having had the same lived experiences.
Girls are a minority among the students attending “Solve IT”, but for Dessie they have the most to contribute.”The boys imagine more, they want to do something that’s big and inspired, the girls they really want to help their community from the core,” she explains.Instead of space rockets and robots, the solutions put forward by the girls she teaches tend to be grounded and immediate – such as an SMS app that informs farmers about local weather conditions.Dessie’s passion for technology was, for the most part, supported growing up in relatively liberal Harar, but her experience isn’t the norm in Ethiopia.

Apple is already rumored to be planning a news and magazine subscription service for next year, and the company is reportedly considering bundling it with the video content it’s been acquiring at a rapid pace. A new report in The Information echoes an earlier story fromThe Wall Street Journal that said Apple could bundle its original video programming — like those coming from its multiyear deal with Oprah Winfrey — with news content, magazines, Apple Music, and iCloud storage. The timing, however, isn’t yet known.
Apple is likely still in the process of deciding the details of how to package, price, and sell all these services, whether together or separately. Previous video experiments like Planet of the Apps were unceremoniously shoved into iTunes and Apple Music. We’d have to expect that there’ll be a more coherent plan in place for the new shows that Apple is sinking billions of dollars into.

Windows 10 tip: Use an ISO file to create a bootable USB flash drive
Your emergency repair kit should include a recovery drive that contains the installation files for the latest Windows 10 version. Here's how to create this indispensable tool quickly and easily.
Double-click to open the ISO file as a virtual drive in File Explorer, then drag its contents to your recovery drive.
Every time Microsoft releases a new feature update for Windows 10, you should build a new recovery drive containing the setup files for that update. You can use that drive to repair a damaged installation or to reinstall Windows on a new PC.
You can use the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB flash drive, as I describe in my installation FAQ. But I recommend a slightly different approach: Use the option to download the Windows 10 installer as an ISO file, and then use that file to make bootable installation media.
How to take control
After the download is complete, you can double-click the ISO file to mount it as a virtual DVD drive and run Setup directly from the mounted drive. From that same File Explorer window, you can also create bootable Windows 10 installation media on a USB flash drive.
In addition to the ISO file, you also need a USB flash drive at least 8 GB in size. This process will delete all data on the USB drive, so back up any important files before proceeding. Then follow these steps:
Plug the USB flash drive into your PC and use the Recovery Media Creator tool create Windows 10 recovery drive. (The easiest way to find this tool is to type Create a recovery drive in the search box on the taskbar, then click the shortcut from the search results. For full details, see "Windows 10 tip: Create a recovery drive.")Open File Explorer and double-click the recovery drive you just created to open its contents in a window. Open a second File Explorer window, locate the Windows 10 ISO file you downloaded, and double-click to mount it as a virtual drive. Position the two File Explorer windows side by side and drag the full contents of the mounted drive to your USB flash drive. Choose the option to overwrite all existing files.
Label the drive (including the version number) and keep it in a safe place.

7 Benefits of Having an Integrated Security System
From boosting productivity, to conflict resolution, integrating a security system can benefit businesses in many ways.
7 Benefits of Having an Integrated Security System
An integrated security system takes multi-layered security systems and integrates them into one solution.
Each day business owners and executives strive to take the necessary steps forward to lead their business in the most optimal direction. While profits, overhead, personnel and market improvement take much of our focus, we tend to forget one of the most essential aspects of our business: security.
Business security is a complex issue that we tend to ignore until it’s too late. In today’s environment, putting up surveillance cameras or contracting a guard service provider is simply not enough from a security liability perspective.
Optimal security solutions can only be achieved by integrating security systems that fit each business’s unique requirements.
Simplify the Transition to IP-Based Security Systems
IP-based surveillance systems are more flexible, scalable and cost effective than CCTV. Find out which capabilities are critical when selecting a new system.
> What is an Integrated Security System?
An integrated security system takes multi-layered security systems and integrates them into one solution. For example, a business can have the following security systems:
Video Surveillance
Access Control
Intrusion Alarm
P.A System
Uniformed Guard Service
Here is how an integrated security system can benefit your business.
1. Efficiency
Running a business comes with an abundant amount of high-order tasks, one of them being the company’s security. An integrated security system in any industry will allow businesses to flourish more effectively and efficiently.
Assigning a specific role for a specific person in regards to the different sectors of the integrated security system will allow the team member to utilize their skills, specifically in that area, ultimately ensuring the management team that the tasks assigned to that specific person will make a grand shift in the company’s efficiency.
2. Centralization
An integrated security system will allow a businesses security operations to become centralized. Management teams and business owners can now get a full report from one area rather then needing to speak to all areas of their integrated security system.
This not only is a time saver, but also allows a more organized work flow for businesses.
3. Theft Prevention
No matter what kind of industry one works in, they always have to be prepared for the unexpected theft. Whether internal theft or external theft, it can be overwhelming.
According to the Kroll Annual Global Theft Report, theft remains predominantly an inside job. The 2016 figures show that 60% of frauds are committed by insiders, up from 55% the year before. Ways to prevent moments like these is to integrate a specifically catered security system for your business.
4. Real Time Monitoring
With multiple security systems, business management teams are able to see what is going on within their facilities and areas of work instantly, if needed. However business owners and management teams don’t always spend all their time on the properties and can’t always ensure themselves that everything is running smoothly.
However, with real time monitoring, that task has turned into a simple system, accessible with a click of a button on your phone, tablet or computer.
5. Conflict Resolution
Some integrated security systems come with a package of video surveillance, access control, intrusion alarms, PA systems and uniformed guard services.
All of these elements will come forth if a problem were to arise in a work place, whether it be an internal/external burglary, attempted break-ins or just about any security threat that can occur at a business.
6. Boost Productivity
At any business, an integrated security system is a guarantee to boosting productivity in the workspace. According to Kristin Morgan at St. Francis University, "Employee monitoring is being used to increase customer satisfaction, improve employee performance and enhance productivity,".
This allows business owners to monitor their employee activities as it is one of the most essential points in protecting their businesses from unwanted actions at the workplace.
7. Business Savings
In the long run, having an integrated security system will allow your business to save money and be protected. Otherwise, in the case of a theft, burglary or robbery, the business owners/management team would be held liable for all the losses with nowhere to turn to.
With an integrated security system, businesses have multiple outlets to look into and see what occurred, why it occurred or the possibility of those events not even taking place at all.
So organizations need to be proactive for their business security as failing to integrate the latest security system in your business can lead to an increased risk of a major security breach
'Atomic Fingerprinting' Tech Could End Counterfeit Goods
The new anti-counterfeiting method has two components: a unique molecular pattern that can be incorporated into a holographic label and a smartphone app.
Credit: Lancaster University
In the sophisticated world of counterfeiting, it can often be difficult to tell fakes from the real deal. But now, scientists have developed a new method that can stamp things with "atomic fingerprints" to keep phony products at bay.
"There is no bigger crime than counterfeit crime ," said Robert Young, a professor of physics at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom and chief technology officer of the tech startup Quantum Base. [ Faux Real: A Gallery of Forgeries]
Earlier this month, Young and his colleagues announced a relatively simple technique for confirming the authenticity of an object — an advance that could put a dent in the counterfeit industry, where fakes, forgeries and imitations cost the global economy half a trillion dollars in lost revenue each year, according to the most recent data from the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development , headquartered in Paris.
The new anti-counterfeiting method,
published online in ArXiv , the open-access preprint journal from Cornell University, has two components: a unique molecular pattern that can be incorporated into a holographic label and a smartphone app.
The unique pattern is created by intentionally fabricating flaws into an atom-thin layer of material, such as graphene oxide. Flaws may include removing a carbon atom, or adding extra oxygen atoms, or creating a ridge of atoms, according to the researchers. Once the flaw is set, the material is incorporated into an ink and then, using an inkjet printer, printed onto a hologram, which can be added as a label to any product.
To confirm the presence of the atomic pattern, a person would use a smartphone camera and its built-in flash to photograph the label. The flash excites the atoms, which produce a unique color based on the pattern. A corresponding app can instantly analyze the image and confirm whether the label is authentic or not, the researchers said.
"I'm really satisfied by how simple it is," Young told Live Science.
Solving such an extensive problem like counterfeiting requires a solution that can be adopted by a large number of people, Young added. A technique that's easy to incorporate and easy to analyze could ensure that it's widely adopted much faster, he said.
Young and his team are working with a company that prints 10 billion holograms per year and said that the first application could be in the automotive industry, where parts are already spray-painted with labels. By piggybacking onto existing manufacturing applications, the researchers can prove that the method works, according to Young.
"We're expecting the first products in market in the first quarter of next year, in 2018," he said.

UK cyber security chief warns
government against using
Kaspersky
In another blow to Kaspersky's business, UK's cyber
security authority has advised government agencies
not to use the anti-virus software. UK's National
Cyber Security Centre chief Ciaran Martin sent a
letter to other departments, warning them that
Russia, "a highly capable cyber threat actor which
uses cyber as a tool of statecraft," has the intent to
target the UK and its critical infrastructure. As such,
Martin wrote, computers with info that could harm
national security shouldn't use an anti-virus
software developed by a company based in Moscow.
Kaspersky has been under fire these past few
months after allegations came out that it's been
working with the Russian government to steal
classified data from the US and Israel. In September,
Best Buy pulled copies of the anti-virus from its
shelves, and the US government officially banned its
federal agencies from using it shortly afterward. In
an effort to salvage what's left of its reputation, the
company announced in October that it's giving
third-party checkers access to its source code for
review.
Despite Martin's warning, the UK government isn't
writing off Kaspersky forever. The Cyber Security
Centre is working with the company to develop a
framework that it can independently verify and use
to prevent Russia from getting its hands on the
country's secrets.

Drones, Phones, And Automation: The
Future Of Home Security
It flies around inside your house, ready to respond to any
emergency, to ward off any intruder, and even to feed
your pets when you’re away. No, it’s not your own
overly-attentive superhero. It’s an Aevena Aire drone , a
milestone of the future of home security. Dubbed a “flying
security guard”, Aevena’s latest sky-bound security
device is like one of those automated robot vacuum
cleaners, but instead of cleaning up dust, it cleans up
security risks.
This indoor drone is just one of the latest developments
in the smart home security world, which is increasingly
blurring the lines between the real world and Hollywood
Sci-Fi. But with so many DIY home security products on
the market, is there a risk we could end up less safe than
we were in the days of the simple lock and key?
Safety From Above
Aevena’s Aire has not yet hit the market. It launched on
Kickstarter in September, with a tentative release date of
December 2018. The drone has proven popular on the
crowdfunding platform, reaching its funding goal of
$50,000 in just four days. Four users have even ordered
the “Triple Pack”, which gives backers three drones for a
cool $1,950.
At this stage, it is difficult to say how popular these
devices will be with the everyday public, but integration
with Amazon Echo’s Alexa is sure to attract many
safety-conscious technophiles.
Alexa, Please Protect My House
Amazon themselves have had their eye on the
burgeoning smart security market for a while now, as an
inside source leaked to the Financial Times that the
online retail giant is working on security accessories for
the Amazon Echo home assistant. These accessories
reportedly include CCTV cameras, the feeds of which
users would be able to view remotely.
Since Alexa is slated to be a $10 million ‘mega-hit’ in
just a few years, its security accessories may prove to be
the most successful bits of smart security kit in time.
Lock, Lock. Who’s there?
It’s not just the inside of the home that is experiencing a
smart security upheaval. Smart locks, such as these new
ones from August , can use sensors to inform owners
whether their doors are locked, unlocked, open or closed.
They can also “auto unlock” for anyone carrying smart
keys.
August has a smart doorbell on the way, too. Equipped
with a tiny camera, the Doorbell Cam Pro will send a live
feed of the outside of an owner’s home to a mobile
phone app, allowing them to keep tabs on their porch,
wherever they are, and use the information to decide
whether to let callers in. There is also Ring that is
designing a complete security “ring” around your home.
Convenience Over Care
All of these home security innovations sound exciting,
and buying them will no doubt make homeowners feel
more protected. But as nearly all of them are intended to
be DIY-installed, there is a risk that they might be less
effective than they seem.
Security experts Banham specifically take issue with DIY-
installed wireless burglar alarms , pointing out that while
laymen can install burglar alarm systems themselves,
they are very likely to make mistakes, and these
mistakes could endanger the property. Even when buying
futuristic high-end smart security products, it’s important
to get confirmation from an expert that your home as
safe as it can be.
Investing in Security
Another downside of these new smart security
developments is their cost. Most products at the moment
cost more than the average household would want to
spend on home security, which could have dire
consequences.
Unless prices come down, there is a risk that we could
end up in a world where the houses of the rich are
protected by high-end drones and smart alarms, while
the houses of the poor are left relatively unguarded.
The Future
Finally, while these drones, apps, and doorbells are
impressive from a gadget geek’s standpoint, there is the
possibility that they may not be as effective as their
technical superiority suggests.
A smart doorbell may be able to show you exactly who is
outside your door, but it won’t stop them from bashing it
down if it’s not made of strong material. A home drone
may be able to fly in a burglar’s face and trigger your
home alarms, but it won’t do much more than a
traditional alarm system already can.
The most effective solution to our security tech worries is
a combination of the traditional and the futuristic. Strong
doors and strong locks monitored by CCTV cameras that
stream to mobile phones. Grounded human security
teams working with their airborne drone counterparts.
This new home security technology is exciting, but we
will have to use it wisely for it to work.
