Entitlement… the one thing that strains even the best of relationships.
Every strong relationship, whether it’s a marriage, friendship, or family bond, thrives on mutual respect, love, and understanding. But there’s one silent destroyer that creeps in when we’re not careful: entitlement.
Entitlement makes us believe the other person owes us something simply because of who we are to them. It shows up in phrases like:
• “After everything I’ve done, you should…”
• “It’s your job to make me happy…”
• “I deserve this because I am your…”
The danger of entitlement is that it blinds us to gratitude. Instead of appreciating the little things people do, we begin to expect them as a right, forgetting that they also have a life to live and don’t actually owe us anything. Over time, this mindset breeds resentment, distance, and disappointment.
The truth is, no one owes us love, attention, or care. These are gifts, freely given. And when we recognize them as such, our relationships flourish. We stop demanding and start appreciating. We stop keeping score and start serving one another.
If you want to strengthen your relationships, check your heart for entitlement. Replace it with gratitude, humility, and a willingness to give as much as you hope to receive.
💡 Remember: Entitlement strains. Gratitude sustains.
Yours truly,
EBD…
