THE MENACE OF EXPO MASQUERADES In AKWA IBOM: A CALL FOR A BAN-
Saviour Akifa
In the cultural tapestry of Akwa Ibom State, masquerades have long held a place of significance. They are often seen as symbols of tradition, spirituality, and community. However, in recent times, a particular type of masquerade known as the Expo Masquerade has emerged as a source of great concern, bringing with it a wave of chaos, fear, and criminality that demands immediate action. It is high time that the government of Akwa Ibom State takes a firm stand and bans these Expo Masquerades.
One of the most glaring issues with the Expo Masquerades is the lawlessness they perpetuate. These masquerades, often clad in flamboyant and intimidating attire, roam the streets with impunity. They disrupt public order, block roads, and cause traffic gridlocks. They harass innocent citizens, extorting money from them under the guise of some traditional or spiritual obligation. Shop owners are forced to part with their hard - earned money, and commuters are left stranded and vulnerable to these masked thugs. This is a clear violation of the rights of the people and a direct challenge to the rule of law in the state.
The Expo Masquerades also pose a significant threat to public safety. Many of them carry dangerous weapons such as machetes, clubs, bow and arrows and even fi****ms. In the heat of the moment, these weapons can be used to cause serious harm or even loss of life. Incidents of violence and assaults during the appearance of these masquerades have been on the rise. Young people, especially those who resist the extortion attempts or question the actions of the masquerades, are often the victims of these attacks. This creates an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the communities where these masquerades operate, and it is the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens from such threats.
Another aspect that cannot be ignored is the negative influence these Expo Masquerades have on the youth. Instead of promoting positive cultural values, they teach the younger generation that violence, extortion, and law - breaking are acceptable ways to get what they want. The youth, who should be focused on education, skills development, and building a better future, are being exposed to a culture of criminality. This is a long - term threat to the development of the state, as a generation of lawless and unproductive youth will hinder the progress of the entire community.
Furthermore, the so - called "cultural" aspect of the Expo Masquerades is often a thin veil for criminal activities. While traditional masquerades are deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual heritage of the people of Akwa Ibom, the Expo Masquerades have deviated far from these noble origins. They have become a tool for a few individuals to enrich themselves at the expense of the community. There is little to no cultural significance in their actions, and they are simply a means of exploitation.
The government of Akwa Ibom State has a duty to protect the well - being of its citizens, maintain law and order, and promote the positive development of the state. Banning the Expo Masquerades is not an attack on culture, but rather a necessary step to safeguard the rights and safety of the people. The state should invest in promoting and preserving the true cultural heritage of Akwa Ibom through legitimate and positive means, such as cultural festivals, art exhibitions, and educational programs.
Law enforcement agencies should be empowered and directed to enforce the ban strictly. Those who violate the ban should face severe penalties to serve as a deterrent to others. At the same time, the government should engage with the communities to explain the reasons behind the ban and to provide alternative ways to celebrate and preserve their cultural identity.
In conclusion, the Expo Masquerades in Akwa Ibom State have become a menace that cannot be tolerated any longer. A ban on these masquerades is essential to restore law and order, protect public safety, and guide the youth towards a more positive and productive future. It is time for the government to take decisive action and rid the state of this blight on its social fabric.
