Respect the Producer's Ears – Don't Argue With Every Suggestion

One of the greatest misunderstandings in music is believing that a producer's job is simply to press the record button and vollect money. If that were true, anyone could become a producer after watching a few YouTube videos.

A real producer listens differently.

While you're focused on delivering your lyrics, the producer is listening to everything else. They're paying attention to your timing, your breathing, your pitch, your pronunciation, your emotion, the balance between the instruments, and whether your performance connects with the listener.

That's why a producer may stop the recording and say:

"Let's try that chorus again."

"Put a little more emotion into that verse."

"You're rushing the beat."

"Let's change that melody slightly."

These comments are not meant to discourage you. They're meant to help you create the best version of your song.

One mistake I see from some artists is taking every suggestion as a personal attack. Instead of listening, they immediately become defensive. They say, "No, that's how I wanted it." Or, "My friends said it sounds fine."

Here's something every artist should remember: your friends may support you because they love you. A producer gives advice because they want your record to compete with professional releases.

That doesn't mean a producer is always right. Music is creative, and every artist has their own vision. But great artists know how to listen, ask questions, and try different ideas before making a final decision. Sometimes one small change to a melody, a lyric, or the way a line is delivered can turn a good song into a memorable one.

The studio should never feel like a battlefield where the artist and producer are fighting for control. It should feel like a team working toward one goal: creating the best music possible.

The artists who grow the fastest are usually the ones who are willing to learn. They understand that feedback is part of the creative process. They don't see correction as criticism—they see it as an opportunity to improve.

Remember, every successful producer wants the song to succeed just as much as the artist does. When the song wins, everyone involved wins.

The Studio Is for Recording, Not for Writing Your Song

One of the biggest mistakes I see artists make is arriving at the studio without being prepared.

They walk in, greet everyone, put on the headphones... and then say, "Producer, give me a few minutes. I'm still writing the second verse."

Those few minutes often turn into an hour.

As a producer, I understand that creativity doesn't always happen on command. Sometimes inspiration comes unexpectedly. But if you've booked a recording session, your lyrics should already be written, your melody should already be clear in your mind, and you should have rehearsed enough to perform with confidence.

Every minute spent writing in the studio is a minute you're not recording. If you're paying by the hour, you're spending money on something you could have done at home for free. Even if you're working with a producer who charges a flat rate, you're using valuable studio time that could have been dedicated to improving your performance, recording harmonies, or perfecting the final mix.

Preparation also improves your confidence. An artist who knows every line of the song performs with emotion instead of reading from a phone. They focus on expression, timing, pronunciation, and connecting with the music instead of trying to remember the next lyric.

Another common mistake is bringing unfinished ideas and hoping the producer will magically complete the song. A producer can certainly help refine your work, suggest changes, and improve the arrangement, but the responsibility for your message and preparation belongs to you. The more effort you put in before arriving, the more the producer can focus on making your record sound exceptional.

Professional artists understand this. They rehearse before they record. They know where to breathe, where to emphasize certain words, and where emotion matters most. That's why they often finish sessions faster while achieving better results.

If you truly respect your music career, treat every recording session like an important performance. Prepare at home. Practice until the lyrics become second nature. Walk into the studio ready to create—not ready to start from the beginning.

The studio should be the place where your preparation comes to life, not the place where preparation begins.

Stop Waiting for Someone to Discover You

One of the most expensive mistakes an artist can make is believing that talent alone will attract success.

I've met artists who spend months perfecting a single song, only to release it with one Facebook post and then wait. They wait for DJs to play it. They wait for bloggers to write about it. They wait for promoters to call. They wait for a record label to notice them.

Weeks pass. Nothing happens.

Then they conclude that people don't support local music.

The truth is, the music industry has changed. Today, artists have more tools than ever before to build an audience without waiting for permission. Your phone is more than just a communication device—it's a marketing machine. Every behind-the-scenes video, studio session, rehearsal clip, performance, interview, and fan interaction is an opportunity to introduce your music to new listeners.

As a producer, I always remind artists that people don't just fall in love with songs—they connect with stories. Let your audience see the work behind the music. Show them the late nights in the studio, the challenges you overcome, the excitement of creating something meaningful. When people feel connected to your journey, they're far more likely to support your music.

Another thing I tell artists is this: don't disappear between releases. If people only hear from you when you have a new song out, you're asking them to care about someone they barely know. Stay active. Start conversations. Encourage engagement. Celebrate your supporters. Be present even when you're not promoting a single.

Most successful independent artists didn't wake up famous. They built trust one post, one performance, one conversation, and one release at a time.

Nobody will ever believe in your dream more than you do. If you don't promote your own music with confidence, why should anyone else?

So stop waiting to be discovered. Start giving the world reasons to discover you.

Success doesn't always come to the loudest artist. It often comes to the one who keeps showing up, keeps improving, and keeps putting their work in front of people without giving up.
