The current state of the Former SADF Canteen and the Apartheid-era Kavango Native Commissioner’s House (the oldest surviving building in Rundu) as of today, 11 June 2026.
Located behind Noordgrens Secondary School in Tutungeni, overlooking the Kavango River, these buildings sit in one of the most scenic spots in Rundu. The views from here are truly breathtaking, but the buildings have been left to rot away.
I will continue posting about this and tagging the relevant authorities until these buildings are rehabilitated and put to good use.
If the government is not able, many NGOs are willing to provide funding to transform these buildings into Rundu arts centre and tourist information centre. Private companies and individuals have also expressed interest in acquiring or leasing the buildings but those of us who are interested are being sent from pillar to post. We do not know where to submit our proposals, nor do we know which institution is the custodian of these two buildings.

It appears the tree was cut down to make way for a new taxi rank steel shade.

Is it true that only 2 out of 8 service stations in Rundu have working tyre air pressure pumps? Apparently, only Ndama Service Station and Sauyemwa Puma have functioning pumps. If this is true, then it’s not good at all. Air pumps are a free complementary service that service stations should provide to car owners. Now look at this old man struggling to pump his tyres with a small pump next to the service station.
So this is the old asbestos pipes in Rundu that keep getting damaged?
