This is 54kg of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) collected by a small but passionate group who organised a UCO collection drive in their company. The total payout is RM81.

See that's the thing with organising. We may think we need very powerful punitive action from the top down to make things happen, and no doubt that's extremely important to push things along. But grassroots organising can be very efficient in sharing values & passions. Recently we've been chatting with customers who were concerned about the state of climate action especially over the next few years.

As much as anxiety can get to us, all we really can do is what's within the locus of our control. And that could be educating your colleagues while organising a UCO collection drive. Or sharing how you do your zero waste shopping on social media. Or declining plastic cutlery when you're having lunch with family. Feels small in the general scope of things but nothing big happens without collective small actions.

So MINIMIZE wants to commend this group who collected the UCO, and everyone who has been doing your best to reduce waste. After all the best is the most you can do 💚...

MINIMIZE wants to remind you NOT to pour your Used Cooking Oil down the drain, in your basin, in the longkang or anywhere inappropriate! Pipes can get clogged and our water systems can get polluted. Instead, bring the oil to us for recycling. ♻️

Pour cooled UCO into any sealable, secure container (mineral water bottles, oil drums etc) and bring them to us. Just make sure you secure them properly in a bag or box so they don't spill all over in your car!

Drop yours off with us and we'll pay out RM1.50/kg (no minimum required). If you have a large amount or have a few neighbours who have plenty of UCO, get in touch with us at 016-2876476 OR 012-4317263 to arrange for pick up.

In the midst of the daily hustle & bustle, as well as attending several vendor events this month, we forgot about our own birthday 😅. It's astounding to us that we made it to 3 years! We open our doors on 13th Oct 2021, right after the 2nd lockdown.

Preparing our 3-year report card filled our hearts with so much gratitude for your support & passion to conserve resources in this home we share together 🌏. This goes to customers as well as collaborators 🌼🌸

In the past 3 years, we:
🌿refused & reused more than 5,300 laundry & dish detergent bottles
🌿refused & reused more than 4,000 shampoo & body wash bottles through refilling or converting to soap & shampoo bars
🌿accepted over 1,800 jars & bottle returns from jam, kombucha, sauces & yogurt for reuse
🌿recycled over 5000kg of used cooking oil (that’s as heavy as 150 Moo Dengs or 5 Perodua Myvi!)
🌿collected over 600kg of fabric, soft toys & shoes for upcycling
🌿worked with over 50 businesses, most of which are small Malaysian businesses or NGOs

Let's keep on going by putting in a bit more effort to minimize waste in our lives & press larger corporations to do their part too! ❤️❤️❤️

Malaysia ranks the highest among 109 countries in consuming microplastics, which are plastic particles smaller than 5mm in length, a recent study found. The study, published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal, found that Malaysians eat an average of 502.3mg of microplastics daily per capita. (The Straits Times, 2024).

While 50% of these microplastics come from fish consumption, the other 50% comes from a variety of sources. What we can do is to try to reduce this where we can, especially on food preparation methods.

This is why we decided to introduce our new
🌼𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙖 𝙒𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝘾𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙤𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨🌼.

🌿 Acacia wood is hard & fine-grained so bacteria cannot thrive.
🌿 Wood is naturally antimicrobial.
🌿 Wood is durable & lasts for years.
🌿 Wood has to be dried well & oil occasionally.

On the other hand,
🔸️Plastic is lightweight.
🔸️Cuts into plastic creates grooves where bacteria can live.
🔸️Microplastics get scraped into food.
🔸️Plastic is cheap but needs to be replaced frequently.

It's important to select durable tools for food preparation, in addition to quality ingredients!

We carry 2 sizes of these cutting boards. Do come in store and have a look!

🥕Homemade Nyonya Acar🥒

We're collaborating with a home-based maker to bring you Nyonya Acar! They're freshly made and can last up to 2 weeks in the fridge but of course, the quicker you eat it, the crisper it is.

We're still troubleshooting on how to get the packaging more sustainable. Do give us to work this out with the maker. Right now as we're seeing if there's demand for this, we only took in 3 packets so they're limited for this weekend!

Most days, being a zero waste entrepreneur is really rewarding. Some days, it's even more inspiring especially when we meet people with a heart of gold 🥰.

This morning a lovely lady popped in for Reuseable Cotton Sanitary Pads. She and her team are from an NGO. A visiting Nepalese nun was to return home tomorrow morning. When these ladies asked her what would her community need, she said reuseable cloth sanitary pads for villagers due to the period poverty there.

So last night we got a phone call to enquire about our available pieces and this morning she showed up and bought up whatever we could spare! That's a total of 90 sanitary pads of 4 sizes, and they would have taken even more if we had extra.

These ladies are aspirational 🥲. The expenditure came out of their own pockets to benefit girls & women in Nepal (we offered a good discount!). Never had we thought our products would travel the distance to those who could benefit. These lovely ladies work with Orang Asli locally on a regular basis as well. We wish them the very best in their community work.
