The organization was established with the view of promoting citizen participation in developmental activities. The founding members realized that citizens are not the integral part of development activities and not fully engaged or involved. Citizens are also denied inclusive participation and decision making structures where only an elite group of people make decision which in the end hinder the progress of communities in Malawi. It is in this view that FORUD came into existence in order to break the barrier of participation among citizens in developmental activities and other issues that affect them.
