together with Waheed Hussein LLP in association with the production team of Publicity Bureau has partnered to bring you Mamenge Nizam. Mamenge Nizam is a web campaign under the KNOWLEDGE ON LAW INITIATIVE (KoLI), aimed at taking a deeper look at the Constitution of Maldives and help break it down in a simpler manner for a broader audience to understand better.

For centuries English imperial influence was prevalent in Maldives although internal prerogative always remained with our 'Radhun' according to HCP Bell (Suood, 2014). As we welcome our 53rd Independence Day, here's a look at how we became a "British Protectorate" in 1887 in the first place, 77 years before Independence in 1965. In 1932 our first written Constitution reiterated the British Crown's "holy" or "Maai vegenvaa" status.
