One reason Business Studies students lose marks is that they answer every question in the same way.

But different command words require different types of answers.

For example:

Define means give the meaning.
Identify means name the point.
Explain means show how or why something happens.
Analyse means develop the effect on the business.
Recommend / Justify means make a decision and support it properly.

The mistake many students make is writing a long answer without checking what the question actually wants.

A student may know the topic well but still lose marks because the answer does not match the command word.

For example, if the question says “analyse”, a simple explanation is not enough.

The answer should show a clear chain:

Point → Reason → Business impact → Consequence

Business Studies is not just about knowing definitions.

It is about knowing exactly what the examiner is asking you to do.

That is why exam technique matters so much.

One common reason Business Studies students lose marks is that their answers are too generic.

They write answers that could apply to any business.

For example:

❌ “Advertising increases sales.”

This is not wrong, but it is too basic.

A stronger answer would connect the point to the business in the case study:

✅ “Advertising may increase sales because more customers will become aware of the business’s products. This could be especially useful if the business is launching a new product or trying to attract customers in a competitive market.”

The difference is simple:

A weak answer shows knowledge.
A better answer shows understanding.
A strong answer applies that knowledge to the business situation.

In Business Studies, students should always ask themselves:

“How does this affect this specific business?”

That one question can improve many answers.

One of the biggest mistakes O-Level Business Studies students make is thinking that longer answers automatically score higher marks.

They don’t.

A long answer with no clear structure can still score poorly.

For example, in questions that ask students to explain, analyse, recommend or justify, examiners are not looking for random business knowledge.

They are looking for a clear chain of thinking:

Point → Explanation → Business impact → Final consequence

A weak answer gives a definition.

A better answer explains how the point affects the business.

A strong answer shows the full impact clearly and, when required, gives a justified decision.

This is why some students know the topic but still lose marks. They revise the content, but they do not practise how to turn that content into proper exam answers.

Business Studies is not just about memorising notes.

It is about learning how to answer the question in the way the exam expects.

Many A-Level Business students do not struggle with Paper 4 because they lack knowledge.

They struggle because they do not know how to turn that knowledge into a strong 20-mark answer.

A good Paper 4 answer is not just a list of advantages and disadvantages.

It needs:

✅ clear analysis
✅ strong use of case study context
✅ proper evaluation
✅ a final judgement that actually answers the question

For example, saying “automation improves efficiency” is not enough.

A stronger answer would explain **when** automation improves efficiency, what risks it creates, and whether it is suitable for that specific business situation.

That is where higher-level marks are usually gained.

Paper 4 is not about writing more.
It is about writing with better judgement.

I’ve put together a full Paper 4 revision bundle for students who want a more structured way to improve their 20-mark answers.
