“The people’s dream is now our project” – Robert Abela pledges unity, investment and next chapter for Malta
Prime Minister Robert Abela says Malta must now “move to the next level” following his swearing-in earlier today, after securing a historic fourth consecutive electoral mandate for the Labour movement.
In an address to the nation, Abela pledged continued economic growth, stronger social investment, stability for families, and the implementation of major projects under Malta Vision 2050 , including the regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Malta in Motion, investment in healthcare, and the national energy strategy.

The official results of the 2026 General Election have been formally presented to President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono by Chief Electoral Commissioner Joseph Camilleri.
According to the Electoral Commission, 312,129 votes were cast. Of these, 306,036 were valid and 6,093 were invalid.
The first count national result was as follows:
Partit Laburista: 158,444 votes (51.77%)
Partit Nazzjonalista: 136,723 votes (44.68%)
Momentum: 4,700 votes (1.54%)
AD+PD: 3,996 votes (1.31%)
Aħwa Maltin: 1,845 votes (0.60%)
Imperium Europa: 167 votes (0.05%)
Independent candidates: 161 votes (0.05%)
The Labour Party obtained 21,721 more votes than the Partit Nazzjonalista, securing a historic fourth consecutive mandate in Government, the first time this has happened in Malta’s political history.
The Prime Minister-Elect Robert Abela is expected to take the Oath of Office later this morning in Valletta.

Reports pointing to fireworks factory in Triq tal-Qaghdi, Maghtab area. The factory name is Madonna Ta’ Lourdes San Gwann.
Drone was used by emergency services as part of efforts to rule out any fatalities
There’s been a massive explosion in the Maghtab area in Naxxar.
The explosion has been heard from many towns and villages in Malta. The time of the explosion was around 6.30 am
Emergency services rushed to the scene minutes later.

People could be seen rushing into shops nearby from the streets to take cover in Naxxar.
Prime Minister Robert Abela wrote on social
Media that his thoughts are with those who may have been affected as a result of the explosion.
As part of the efforts to establish whether there’s anyone at the site, a drone is being used by rescue workers and the Armed Forces. From information we have obtained, it appears that the site has been completely destroyed.

Gozo is red and white: Robert Abela
During a mass meeting celebrating the fourth consecutive Labour Party's victory, Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted Labour's absolute majority of 22,000 votes. He stated that Gozo had been won by Labour and challenged claims made this morning that the island remained a Nationalist stronghold, saying: "They told us this morning that Gozo is blue, but in reality it is now white and red."
Abela declared that he would spend the next five years working to implement the party's electoral manifesto, adding that the Maltese people had chosen the Labour Party's vision for the country.
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that the campaign had been conducted in a spirit of respect and had centred on ideas and policies.
Addressing both Labour supporters and those who voted for other parties, Abela said he intended to serve all citizens and called for unity in moving the country forward.
He thanked the public for entrusting him to lead the country once again.
