As the first ASEAN Leaders’ Summit hosted and chaired by the Philippines came to a close, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), together with ASEAN trade unions and civil society organisations, released a joint statement rejecting attempts by the Myanmar military junta to rebrand military rule as a so-called civilian government. The groups condemned the installation of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as “President” of Myanmar, calling it an effort to legitimise the 2021 coup through a tightly controlled electoral process and military-dominated institutions rather than a genuine democratic transition.
Alongside the release of the statement, BWI joined protest actions in Cebu opposing the junta’s attempts to pressure ASEAN into allowing its full participation in the summit. The groups said ASEAN’s credibility depends on standing with the people of Myanmar, democratic forces, and independent trade unions instead of legitimising military rule under a civilian mask.

မြန်မာနိုင်ငံလုံးဆိုင်ရာအလုပ်သမားသမဂ္ဂများအဖွဲ့ချုပ် CTUMက ဦးဆောင်၍ အလုပ်သမားအားလုံးနိုးထကြ ရပ်တည်တိုက်ပွဲဝင်ကြ ဆိုသည့် နှိုးဆော်ချက် စာတန်း ထုတ်ပြန်ချက် နှင့် အတူ"Fight for Democracy, Freedom and Justice" ဆောင်ပုဒ်ကို ကိုင်ဆွဲပြီး မြန်မာပြည်တွင်း ထိန်းချုပ်နယ်မြေ တနေရာနှင့် ယခု ပြည်တွင်း တစ်နေရာတွင် အခမ်းအနား (နှစ်ခု)ကို တပြိုင်နက်တည်း ကျင်းပပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။

On May 1, 2026, the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM) successfully marked the 136th International Workers’ Day by holding two simultaneous commemorative events—one in a controlled territory and one within the country—under the powerful rallying cry: "Workers Arise, Stand Up, and Fight!"

The events were graced by the presence of CTUM President U Maung Maung and U Hein Lat from the CTUM Migration Department, who provided opening remarks and engaged with the gathered workers. Their speeches highlighted the current state of the labor movement and focused on the following pillars:
